Why Are We So Selfish?

Americans never will stop amazing me. A few days ago I posted a Rave about the joys of being a volunteer. It is not only rewarding but I am a firm believer that you reap what you sow. Since a lot of America doesn't understand the plight of a 99er you are asking all of us to reach out and help. What a better way to do that then get involved in the community? I never asked or told anyone they had to drive long distances or spend any money. You could walk if need be. Imagine my surprise when someone posted this:

"We would ALL love to be able to afford to volunteer. BUT doing something for FREE doesn't pay bills. Never will."

To me that is a very selfish attitude. I have seen many people get paying positions in my Hospice after being a volunteer or get a lead on a job. There is always someone who is worse off then you. Why not help each other in this time of need? Help others and you might be surprised of your rewards. Networking is a great addition to any job search.

Volunteer to Not Look Desperate

Job hunting, done right, can be a terrible, terrible lonely process, admitted by a job placement professional. So to get out of your head and score some real world cred (no need to note "volunteer" if work is legit), get a gig the easiest way – by working for free. You don't have to do it full-time, as you need to eat once in a while. But stories abound about how people have either turned these jobs into full-time gigs or met great contacts to get them ahead.

28 months ago: I've done volunteer work before, felt damn good after doing it too. But you gotta think of it from our side too, man. I am barely surviving as it is, paycheck to paycheck. We're in an economic funk in the US right now. So we can't just, give up and give the world a hug
