One of the first things we have learned about Supreme Court Nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor is that she is what Rush Limbaugh is calling a reverse racist. Personally I just think she is a plain out racist. I am sure everyone out there already knows what I mean by that. Since she was announced as Obambi’s pick, her back ground has started to be investigated.
Over at Politico.com there is a brief story about how the White House press secretary Robert Gibbs warned Judge Sotomayor’s critics “to measure their words carefully.” To me this sounds like a threat. To which I mean that we are not supposed to bring up anything that is damaging to Judge Sotomayor. Her own words and belief’s are going to do the work for the critics. They are just repeating what she has said.
Republican critics in an article over at TheHill.com point out concerns that she will not be a neutral arbitrator of the law and legal precedent and instead will be an activist judge, of which we already have way to many of on Federal court benches. Some even wonder how what she has eaten growing up is going to affect her decisions because she made the following statement “For me, a very special part of my being Latina is the mucho platos de arroz, gandoles y pernir — rice, beans and pork — that I have eaten at countless family holidays and special events.” The thought seems to be that because of her Latin background she will decided more in favor of other Latino’s or minorities based on their skin color and not the law, at least that is how I read it.
Dictionary.com has the following
definition for the word wise: “having the power of discerning and judging properly as to what is true or right; possessing discernment, judgment, or discretion.” The reason I bring this up is because the Wall Street Journal Online quotes Judge Sotomayor disagreeing with Retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor on the definition of wise. Stating that “there can never be a universal definition of wise.” I am just wondering what dictionary she is getting her definitions from.
Judge Sotomayor follows that up with the following racist’s statement: “I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life." This is a racist’s statement because it is a derogatory towards a person of another race. Anytime you make a statement that can be deemed derogatory towards someone based on their race, creed or skin color then it is a racist statement.
I also believe based on what I have read that she feels that she is a Latina woman first and a judge second. I believe as does current Justice Antonin Scalia that being a judge comes first and your ethnicity comes second.
I hope that the Judiciary committee whose job it is to question her does not give her a pass because of her race or sex. I would hope they look at her judgments as an appellate judge and the statements she has made in public in regards to her views on the law and how it should be viewed and interpreted.
