Where are all the plus size clothes?

Why don't plus size women just give up and start walking around naked? That is the message being given by fashion clothing retailers and manufacturers. Plus size fashion is becoming harder and harder to find at the local mall. What is a plus size fashionista supposed to do?

According to a recent article in Crain's New York there are several clothing manufacturers who have moved their plus size selection to their online stores, cut back selection in the retail stores or just eliminated anything larger than a size 14 or 16. Bloomingdale's moved the plus size department at their flagship store from the basement to the third floor and halved the square footage. Saks offers more than twice as many brands online as it does in their stores and Ann Taylor, Banana Republic and Old Navy have moved their plus size selections online entirely. Liz Claiborne dropped the Elisabeth line altogether leaving a gaping whole in the classic, work place clothing niche that can only be filled by Talbot's Woman at a hefty price.

Manufacturers and retailers have cited the economic climate as a reason for disregarding the plus size consumer. They cite declining numbers for plus size clothing in contrast to "regular" size clothing and the increased cost of making plus sized lines that require extra fabric and special models. One has to wonder which came first, the lack of sales or the lack of selection? The trendy babydoll top isn't flattering on every body, big or small. Try to find a no iron, button front blouse without any pleats, bows or crazy prints to wear to work in a size 18. It's not out there. How about a suit in a size 22 that has a jacket that's not cut to mid thigh and has enormous shoulder pads.
Good luck.

If you head to the local mall your options are extremely limited. There is always the anchor department stores, but as we have discussed earlier the selections are getting more and more cut back. No offense intended to Sag Harbor, but how many pairs of elastic waist polyester pants can one person have, even at $29.99. Avenue and Lane Bryant are the only mall options left and Avenue has, in recent years, seemed to have pulled out of the major malls and into the smaller strip malls. While these are both great stores and I recommend both highly for fashion forward clothes, why do all fashion conscious plus size women have to dress alike? Where is the selection?

The selection is online. Websites like 14wPlus.com are pulling together online retailers and organizing them by style and selection in addition to listing current coupon codes and sales events. If you have ever googled plus size clothing you know that you get the same sites over and over again. 14wPlus.com lists some of these same sites but also has some smaller stores that offer plus size fashion that the searcher might miss. The online plus size fashion shopper needs a tape measure to get accurate sizing since the mall store fitting room experience is no longer an option. All of these online stores have very liberal return policies and new stores are being added all the time. 14wPlus.com has just added Apple Bottom and Phat Farm for the junior clothing shopper and even has large selection of stores that offer bridal and bridesmaid's gowns in plus and extended sizing. Plus size dresses are in abundance online and plus size swim stores have great selections.

The experience of having a nice afternoon shopping at the mall might be a thing of the past for the plus size fashionista but not all size 20's have to dress the same. You just need to know where to look.

I sit right in the middle with the rest of American women. So when I try to find clothes, the majority of the time the size is out. Why these places don't stock more of the middle size is beyond me.

But I think there should be more stores, and more options for those women who are plus sized. Same with big guys. I know they have Big and Tall, but that's the same as having the men dress the same too.
31 months ago: I completely agree with you, this is not fair. But being in Canada we have not yet been spoiled with that much choices for Plus Size clothing and we kind off all Plus Size women dress the same. It happened to me a few times to walk in a room and see another lady with the same outfit. So I have created www.BellesPlus.com where you can find Plus Size clothing around the World (adding stores every day). Real stores (I like the small ones around the corner) and online stores. If we have to buy online why not take the opportunity to visit the World! And if you want to order from France and don't speak French, contact me I'll find a way to help.

When I moved to the States, there was a bigger selection. However, I noticed that in department stores the plus sizes were hidden away in the basement. Clothes crammed into small spaces, messing and ugly. And, once again that maturnity thing...the plus sizes were almost always by the maturnity section. So, you were either fat or with a baby.

Interesting. With the majority of women wearing a size 12 and UP, why would retailers shame those buyers to the basement or the back of the store? I worked for a designer (in another lifetime) and while we were developing a high end line, I mentioned extended sizes. The marketing director and the designer were HORRIFIED..."my dear, that would just cheapen the line". The idea was never given a second thought. The idea that if you were a larger size you didn't deserve to wear quality, classic and beautiful clothing. That clothing for women above size 12 was considered temporary and throw away. Again, why do retailers alienate us? Are they ashamed? Do they only want the slender girls up front? Hummm...upon entering a store do they want to give the illusion that the only customers they have are slender and fit...when hidden downstairs, in the back, packed in between racks for junk clothes are the "other" customers. No wonder women have self esteem issues.

In this economy, why would retailers cater to the few instead of the majority of customers. They are telling us it is not okay to be curvy....but clearly over half this country has a few extra pounds. Deal with it! And, I mean DEAL!

Phew!

Where are the old lady plus sizes? Completely annoys me when I find a plus size site and all they have is stuff for kids (ie under 50). Makingitbig.com does a fairly decent job but forget the rest of those places.
31 months ago: Dear longbrowndress....

Well, I would never call myself old....ever! You are a mature lady. And, I know it's hard that some of those sites seem to cater to younger women (or girls). But there are useful sites out there, especially ones that stock clothing from many brands (i.e. onestopplus.com). I know you'll have to weed through a little....but the classics are there.

If I can offer advice, try to focus on classic clean lines. Basics you can jazz up with jewelry, also making them last longer style wise. Twin sets that go to the hip, basic pants in black, khaki, charcoal can be mixed and matched with lots of elegant tops. If you don't want to show your arms too much but don't want to be boiling hot in the summer, go for a 3/4 sleeve. I would stay away from prints...they are too fussy and can age a person. If you like dresses, again go for classic with a little shape and pair it with one of the cardigans from a twinset. Add a beautiful broach close to your face to show the sparkle in your eyes. Plus-sized ladies can carry off larger jewelry a lot better than those skinny mini's.

And....don't forget those foundation garments....any girls best friend! Lift up the ladies and suck in any bumps...will make even cost efficient clothing look more expensive. FIT IS THE KEY. Say no to mumus....unless you're hanging out in the back yard on a hot summer day. :)

An elegant and classic mature woman shows a certain strength and beauty any size can exude!

So, don't feel old, feel wise and experienced. Think of the style of Jackie Kennedy with a few extra pounds. With quality clothing and shoes, simple jewelry and your self confidence you will look stunning!

Good luck! Show your sparkle!

In Canada I have found a few retail stores that are fairly consistent with new lines and they seem to be proud to sell them to us plus size gals - Reitman's, Additionelle, Penningtons and my favourite, Fashion Addition. There are several Jones of New York outlet stores that also sell plus sizes. In the States, my favourite is Macy's. They have lots of choice and the sales are always good. I did not know that Old Navy had plus sizes - I don't generally shop there for obvious reasons plus the quality is crappy and the stores are a nightmare. The problem buying on-line if you are not a perfectly proportioned body, you can't know what will look good or not. You know what its like to take 30 outfits into the changeroom only to find 2 or 3 choices.
31 months ago: Hi Mickey!!

I too am Plus size and Petite (I am 5'2"). Petite has always been classified by height, not weight. Old Navy quality is fine when you're shopping for simple clothing...it's the same as the Gap. I have several items from there....they're not falling apart. But if you are looking for HIGH quality designer clothing in plus size petite, maybe Macy's is your place. However, I've found items there that were below quality standards, so it's a matter of luck on the day you are looking.

Never enjoyed shopping....but getting knit items and easy to fit items online is the easiest.

Ever tried J.Jill? They carry plus size online. Of course it's not petite, but at 5'2", I have purchased may items from there with no problem. And, I think you will like their quality.

Also good for online classic well made clothing for plus sized women (fitting petites) are: Eddie Bauer and Landsend. I have a few twin sets that are very pretty from there. More classic than that and very well made are items from Talbots online. They sell plus sizes also. Classic stuff that is well made.

It's just my opinion that plus sized women look best in classic clothing. The more details, or the more trendy the styling, the more attention you bring to the clothing and not to yourself and your own beauty.

For me, the petite issue comes into play with pants and dresses (skirts), the dresses and skirts need to be shortened. As for the pants, I need them made to fit. Luckily, I sew and make pants to fit just me. But you can always go to a tailor to make pants fit just for you. Pants are an essential...they don't need many special details. Get a few in different colors once you find something that fits. That's what I do. If you are looking for quality clothing, you will have to pay for it like everyone else, not just because we are plus sized.

Good luck!
29 months ago: Magdalena Petites is an online store that has plus size petite jackets that are very reasonable. There is not a huge selection, but the quality of the garments are wonderful and the fabrics are beautiful.
19 months ago: I couldn't agree more - I wish ALL stores would carry ALL sizes in ALL fashion styles. Locally, my choices are slim: Avenue, Lane Bryant, Macys, Dillards, Dress Barn, Ross, Cato Plus. That's it. I'd love to shop at boutiques & trendy stores at the mall....but it's not happening.

However, the bigger America gets, the more I think that will change. Give it time.

Meahwile, hit up the web. I have found all kinds of great fashion online! Alight, OneStopPlus, Igigi, Kiyonna, Torrid...the list goes on. I don't usually do brand names & I definitely don't do traditional (boring)

Dresses, skirts, colors & patterns. Pair a solid belt & shoes with it & you are stylin.
