When are the politicians going to "make The Hard Decisions".

And if we were all so damn smart why didn't we have something in place before this became a problem?

We have been hearing over the past several months about how leadership needs to step up and make the hard decisions in regards to the budget crisis in this country, yet it seems that even before the argument got started the republicans were set on entitlement cuts and the democrats were set on cutting the tax breaks for wealthier citizens.

Does that sound like a hard decision was made? It seems to me that the harder decision would be to go thru and remove the billions of wasted dollars on duplicated service, overbid contracts, unfinished projects and the general pork barrel spending that includes every single state in the union.

The government in general pays far to much for both goods and services yet no one is saying lets do what other business's have done and pare down our staffing, change our hours of operation and look for better ways to profit from the services it renders.

Democrats still seem content to throw money away on programs like energy star. Republicans are more then nearly any time in history completely dedicated to protecting deep pockets. We have a rally of the poor supporting the rich and I fully expect to see the cat chasing the dog.

We have left one of our major values by the side of the road if we somehow feel that those who profit most from being American citizens with our freedoms and resources should not be required to pay a lions share for the privilege. It is our very society that allowed them to flourish, they were educated at our expense we provided a safety net to their assumed risk. It is the responsibility of those who can, to help those in need who they ultimately profit from.

With great risk comes great reward, but more and more often we are seeing the manipulation of markets where no true risk exists. We have undersold our economic resources to American companies for decades, all the while quoting the scripture of reciprocation which as we see today in our time of crisis does not exist.

Cuts and reforms if necessary should be made, but I say let them come after all other waste is identified and eliminated. After we remove the "perks" of office and exorbitant salaries and benefits. After we take a long hard look at the duplicated services and inefficiencies that plague the current system.

Those of us who are closer to the bottom then the top should pay heed to their instincts instead of the rhetoric of either party.

If a service is efficient, produces jobs and does a useful service to the community and if it saves money in the future, lets keep it. If a service is inefficient or doesn't do the job it was intended to do, lets fix it so it is more efficient or get rid of it.

That goes for the military which is the most inefficient agency we have that is geared to fight major wars against enemies that no longer exist. We need to pare the military down close most of the 1000 foreign bases, and change emphasis to counter terrorism instead of expensive major weapons systems.

But the other side is that our revenue has continued to shrink as our services grew. We are the richest nation in the world but much of the nation lives in poverty while a very small minority of people, the top 20 % owns 97% of the wealth and the bottom 80% of the people scrape by on 7% of the wealth.

But the top 20% are the ones that get all of the tax breaks and they end up paying only 17% of their income.

Why should the richest nation in the world be shutting down libraries and firing teachers, police, and firemen, while our infrastructure crumbles all so the richest can pay the lowest taxes in 60 years.

We don't have a spending problem we have a wealth distribution problem. We need to get some of that wealth from the top down to the bottom so people can start spending again so factories will start hiring again so the economy will start growing which will reduce the deficit.

Really?

Not too sharp on getting out of your entitled bed and leaving your entitled meals because your too busy visiting your entitled medical support...entitled etc.....

to actually pay something above everyone else into the system you hate?

When was the last time I heard a liberal say..."I'll give up everything for the cause"? When did that first happen AL? By whom? We need your documentation.

You folks talk a good game of "Poor Me" while not willing to break your manicured nails.

Guess what. Those 1060's days have long since passed.

Pick up one of Obamas' shovels...Let us know if you can find one.
9 months ago: I think the simple reality is.....everyone is correct to some degree. Unfortunately, the Tea Party/GOP doesn't want to go there. I was appalled at the recent debates with the GOP candidates where they all said a 10:1 cut to increase package was unacceptable. Cut $10 dollars in spending, raise taxes by $1 and that is unacceptable.......hello.

In the past 10 years, taxes have been cut unrealistically. In the past 10 years, spending has been increased unrealistically.

Only when all parties are prepared to stand up and admit to this, and deal with it will we get anywhere. As long as politicians will pander to the easy way out, we will get no where.

Unfortunately, the longer it goes, the harder it will be to recover. The critical question: Will the powers that we elect actually take the hard, real steps necessary to start fixing the problem?
