Fox Makes You Ignorant!

Well now we have proof for what we knew all along. People who listen to Fox News are ignorant.

A poll by Fairleigh Dickinson University found that people who depended on Fox news were 18-points less likely to know anything than people who didn't listen to the news at all. http://crooksandliars.com/karoli/fox-new...

Horrors! Can it be that Fox News is actually spreading misinformation? Would Murdoch do that?

What is even worse is that those who actually read newspapers or listen to NPR are 12 points better informed than those who don't pay attention at all. THe best informed are those who watch the Sunday News programs. Those are the shows that actually have panels of experts calmly discussing the news.

It seems that blatant propaganda, and the entertainment value of bloviators who shout each other down on FOX is harmful. Imagine That!

I can understand that Fox is particularly averse to Science facts because the facts could hurt their corporate sponsors.

What is even worse is that the people who know the most about what is going on in the world are the watchers of the Fake News Comedy shows, The John Stewart Show and the Colbert Show. http://thinkprogress.org/default/2007/04...

And it also stands to reason that someone who listens to radio shows would be more likely to have a longer commute to and from his job, which would indicate a better paying job, and a higher level of cognizance.

The study also states that watchers of left leaning network news like MSNBC tend to be very misinformed. Forgot to include that little tidbit?

Also, 612 New Jersey residents took part in the poll. Not a very significant sampling.

I read the study in it's entirety, and the questions all deal with a) revolution and b) Republican politicians. The exception to this line of questioning was one question concerning economics in the EU. The results of that question were omitted for some strange reason.

But I did also notice that the raw point spread was not that great until they tinkered with the numbers using their proprietary formula. http://www.rantrave.com/Rant/How-to-Lie-...

6 months ago: MSNBC still did 10 pts more than Fox.

The main findings were that the "Infomation" format that Murdoch introduced, does a much worse job of informing the people than calm rational discussion with emphasis on facts. ""Sunday morning news shows tend to spend a lot more time on a single issue than other news broadcasts, and they are less likely to degenerate into people shouting at each other," said Cassino. "Viewers pick up more information from this sort of calm discussion
than from other formats. Unfortunately, these shows have a much smaller audience than the shouters."

We should bring back the Fairness Doctrine. Today all of the corporate media is afraid to anger their sponsors, and there is an attempt to show contrasting opinion but very little attempt to determine actual facts.

People who watch ideological news from the left or the right do worse than those who don't mind having their ideological opinions challenged.

With all that is going on in the Middle East why do none of the major news sources allow people to watch Al Jazeera? I think NPR does so wel because they broadcast a lot of the BBC which is at least one step removed from the corporate media.

1. Which Republican candidate seems to be leading in the polls?

2. Have the opposition forces in Egypt been successful in bringing down the regime there?

3. Have the opposition forces in Syria been successful in bringing down the regime there?

4. Are OWS protesters mostly Republicans or Democrat?

5. Which country has had to spend the most money to bail out European countries?

I'll lead off with #5, because that is the question the results of which the researchers didn't even include in the scoring. In fact, they didn't list the results in the final paper.

Then we have #1, a topic for which the answer changes almost daily, and changes within days depending on which poll you are listening to. So basically they are polling people to see how effective dissemination of polling results are.

#2 Again, depends on who you are listening to, and how you interpret the situation in Egypt. Is Mubarak gone? Yes. Is the old regime gone? Not by a long shot. Egypts military just appointed a Mubarak staffer as interim Prime Minister, and gave him even more powers than Mubarak had.

#3 The ones who got it wrong ranged from Fox at 20%, MSNBC at 19%, CNN 18%. The ones who were honest and just said they don't know were scored at Fox-35%, MSNBC-34%, and CNN at 32%.

Does this directly correlate that Fox watchers are more honest than liberal news outlet watchers, or does it mean that Fox watchers are more prone to admit when they don't know something and not say what they assume to be true?

#4 Now....I thought the whole brunt of the OWS publicity campaign was to assert that they weren't politically oriented, just a bunch of Americans out there trying to make things better for everyone. You know, a generally homogenous cross-section of the 99% as a whole. The same thing the TEA party tried to pull off, saying it wsn't primarily Republicans, just a bunch of folks who were fed up with the irresponsible spending by the government.

(That message was disseminated so successfully by the liberal media, by the ay, that MSNBC scored worse on that question than Fox.)

I think the overall message here is that anyone who relies on any particular branding or slant over all the others is more likely to have less actual factual information to work with.

But hey, I know people who literally wanted to kick Bo's butt when he cheated on Hope.

Reading is a skill of understanding what one reads. Sometimes people must rely on others to give them correct information when they don't have the time, and you can usually weed out the bad and tune in to the better news programs to keep up.

5 months ago: This article points out that this study is based on proven methods, but this study isn't that important. There have been dozens of similar studies all of which rate Fox News at the bottom. http://www.mediaite.com/online/that-ill-...

Here is another earlier study that showed that watchers of Fox news were the most misinformed. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/17...

Here are three more Pew studies about Fox watchers being misinformed that Jon Stewart commented on - the public agrees. http://mediamatters.org/research/2011062...

This article and yet another study indicates why Fox viewers are misinformed. Murdoch is just using it as a propaganda tool to push his radical agenda. http://www.examiner.com/political-buzz-i...
5 months ago: Sunny says quoting others shows ignorance...

Reality suggests that paid media come up with self justifying polls and studies which denounce 'the other'. Stalin and Hitler used the media in similar ways, to denounce 'the other'. The media are paid to do their job, and paint the american people as enemies of the media (we already knew that).

NASCAR fans were not paid when they booed 'the first beast'- So the impromtu NASCAR poll of 100,000 statistically significant people proved what? That like minded people feel the same way?

RE Fox News: Murdoch is a socialist, so the communists (D) denounce him as 'the other'. Both socialists (R) and communists (D) are repugnant to America and our Constitution.

5 months ago: Al, I going to ignore all of this junk and pay attention to what you wrote because it makes sense and everyone else outside of these few know and are aware of what is going on in the world. There is a blog on the internet when you search for Rantrave that says that people are plagued by the stalkers and trolls on this site. They say it is obscene and Rantrave will not do anything about it. It's too bad because I know I for one am related to a politician who was a Republican during Reagan's time who would make those people shake in their boots. This person was high ranking in Raegan's Administration and powerful. These people are fooling themselves thinking they are anybody because they are nobodies and nobody that I would associate with.
I rest my case because they are so ridiculous that they showed who they are and this is the type that represent the tea baggers. OMG. No wonder why.
Quote you:

It is up to the people to sort out the truth, but Fox out and out poorly represents the truth. I know for certain that you can't fool the people.

(I only do business with 'non-union shops', since collectivism is abhorrent. How do you tell if they're fubar- Ask how good the bribes and kickbacks are? Some are good and some aren't. You can usually weed them out.
Those other nobodies will never, never meet a Big Union Boss so they rely on gossip. They aren't in that league.

Unfortunately, his successful labor tactics eventually led to the closing of the factories that employed thousands of textile workers in the region. Now, some grateful Guatemalan and Thai workers are happily sewing away on the clothes that were once made here.

5 months ago: Box it is not directed to you. It is directed to the trolls on this site that said terrible things, and yet say nothing at all. They have no manners or class and no dignity and for some reason are allowed to do this. That's why there are so few people here. They can't be bothered with that nonsense.
If they dish it out, I can give it back 10 times more.
I can disagree with you and still agree with many things you say. That is not the point. Read over some of those comments. They are sick.
Me too. I've known many. Look at Milton Hershey. No formal education and he built a Town, gave people jobs and schooling. He is an honorable person. My family came over in the late 1800s and early 1900s and were respected. It isn't about what you do. I don't care if someone has grease on his hands and works night and day because he does honest work, but these others are nothing compared to those people. They remind me of people who are probably 30 - 35 years of age and don't know very much so are on the attack. That is typical of the definition of a cyber troll. It all depends if a person is willing to listen to all or at least what one has to say. Al has said many things that everyone knows, such as on this particular thread. No one debates him, they just cause conflict and prove nothing at all. They say disgusting remarks to me because they say I think I'm smart. I am smart, but I also learn from some of you who know more than I.

I'm guessing you don't know the real definition of "tea bagger" , otherwise I'm sure a person of your standing and outstanding morals would definitely not call someone that. Anyone who called me that would definitely have to defend himself.

After you read the definition here, http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.ph... you decide whether or not an apology is in order.

On the other hand, if you feel that it is appropriate to use sexual vulgarities to make fun of your political adverseries, then you will enjoy Rachel Maddow on MSNBC using the term and the associated perverted innuendo ad nauseum. http://theweek.com/article/index/202613/...
