Early humans had a very practical need for modifying their bodies. If you are a slow hairless bipedal animal with dull teeth, nubby fingers and toes that has no visible form of self defense and no natural hunting mechanisms then the logical thing to do is augment your abilities in order to down play your deficiencies. A camouflaged human on stilts with tree branches that look like antlers for example would appear a lot more menacing to an encroaching predator than the soft hairless meat sack that said human really is. This skill of making oneself look a lot more menacing to attackers became a signature feature of the human species since the very beginning. The fact is that with time we have become skilled artisans of body modification. But to what end?
Needless to say that humans have not, as a species, needed to protect ourselves from predators for a long time. In fact we have become the top predators on this planet. So why do we still feel the need to modify our looks to appear more menacing ? We humans cake on potentially toxic plethora of chemical cocktails on our delicate outer skin layers. We humans ingest even more shady mixtures. We humans undergo painful operations to modify almost every part of our body and when common sense and the law have already determined that such a procedure serves no medical benefit we are even willing to undergo that painful body modification procedures anyway without any anesthetics !
A warning is in order here. Body modification causes skin deformity. It should go without saying that any unnatural modification of ones form will change the look of that form. Any attempt to return a body feature to its pre modified look should be considered impossible. So if you are thinking of getting any body deforming procedure, don't. This has been a Dwayne Johnson public service announcement. Remember that you are never, always alone!
