Once upon a time there were only glasses, big, clumsy, dorky glasses. We wore them because otherwise our poor vision would only allow us to bump into walls and after a while those bumps began to not only hurt but cause scars. Until that blessed day when contact lenses were invented. Now we could walk among the perfect, flawless, pretty people without them suspecting that among them dwelt ocular misshapen creatures with modified glass implants that allowed us to literally, LOOK just like them!

Well those days were long ago. Now a days nobody flinches at glasses and contact lenses, now contacts, as they are commonly referred, are made of cheap plastic composites that allow them to be disposable and inexpensive. So much so that contacts are now sold in designer colors with designer imprints to give even the perfect sighted individual a flare of uniqueness.

This practice is so common and inexpensive in fact that school age children can purchase these novelty over the counter contacts for less than it would cost them to get their hair done at a salon. But what is the hidden cost? Recently in New York City a school age girl no older than fourteen purchased a twenty dollar pair of novelty contacts that she only wore for one day. This however was long enough for them to scratch one of her corneas, which was there long enough to allow an infection to take hold, which was long enough to cause enough damage that could potentially leave her permanently impaired from that eye.

I am a simple person. So you wouldn't catch me wearing such frivolity but I am not everyone else. So consider this a warning from someone who has common sense. Please don't wear contacts that are not prescribed by professionals as a corrective tool. They are dangerous, and illegal too. It's not worth loosing your vision just so that you can look different. This has been a Dwayne Johnson public service announcement. Remember that you are never, always alone!
