Unions Threaten, Obama Concedes

Two days ago the heads of the major labor unions, who were already stating their dislike of the extra tax on Cadillac health care plans, put Obama on notice. They warned him that if union health care plans were included in the Cadillac tax that has been proposed in the health care bill, the democrat members of congress would experience defeat 1994 style.

Obama conceded. All collective bargaining units will be exempt from the Cadillac Tax until 2018. That will save the unions about 60 billion dollars.

For those of you who do not know what a Cadillac plan is, you should probably look at yours, because you probably have one. A Cadillac plan is a health care plan that has a total annual cost (premiums only) of 8,000 dollars for a single payer, and 23,000 dollars for a family plan. The total includes not just what you contribute, but your employer as well and the cost of your Dental and vision plans are added in as well...unless of course you work for a Union where even after their sweet little deal expires in 2018, they get a little extension that exempts the costs of their Dental, vision, and flex plans.

Depending on what part of the country you live in, you may be looking at the amounts and asking what the big deal is. Well depending on what part of the country you live in, means that your costs may be far lower than others. Massachusetts, for example has incredibly high health care costs compared to the rest of the nation, where Idaho has some of the lowest.

You also have to look at other factors. Companies with thousands of employees have much more bargaining power with the insurance companies to help keep costs down. The companies that have only a few hundred or less typically pay much higher prices per employee per plan.

Regardless, this is just another bribe, in the long list of bribes, that Obama has given to get this legislation that no one wants passed.

If this is so, maybe it gives us an idea why the Unions have so much power.

Remember what a politician really is: A whore dressed as a man, willing to sell his vote and soul to whomever will pay the highest price.

I once worked in a non union shop and they paid us a lot less than everyone else, so we started organizing and brought in union reps to talk to the workers. The threat of that made the company increase our wages and then we stopped organizing. Just the threat was sufficient to guarantee fairness.

In our union our industry jobs were receiving less in salaries than the private industries doing the same thing. The unions allowed us to get better health care as compensation for the lower salaries. So if they started taxing us for the better health care, we would be paid less plus we would have to pay more for insurance, so why would anyone work for us? To be competitive, these health plans we bargained for should be excluded from the tax until we can renegotiate salaries that are competitive with the rest of industry.

With that...I don't blame the unions for going after and protecting their employees. I Blame Obama for giving in. What about the rest of us that maybe have the same benefits/pay structure that you do...but don't have the backing of a union? We don't matter?

Furthmore, while I agree with unions in concept for the workers, the leaders have gotten greedy. Look at what the the United Auto Workers have done to GM and Chrysler.

Which brings me to another point. 50 Banks along with GM and Chrysler took bailout funds. The Union became part owner of GM. The banks paid back their TARP money in Full with interest to the government. GM has not, and is not profitable.

Obama now wants to slam the Banks with huge taxes on their bonuses to make up the money that GM lost and has not paid back while the UAW gets 60 billion in additional tax breaks.

I think the banks need to form some sort of a union.
