U.N peace keepers: helping people, even if it kills them. 5,500 so far…

If the U.N could remain a simple tool for nations to debate and negotiate on international matters I may not mind its existence. Yet as with any political force the U.N seeks more power and more control. Of course by gaining more power and control it will in its own opinion make things wonderful for all the little people. This is the twisted ideology that has lead to much destruction and death in countless tragic communist and socialist experiments. It is like the big bully on the playground who insists everyone play his game because it is the most fun, never realizing the other kids are not playing for fun but to simply avoid pain.

Here is a classic example of helping the down trodden even if it kills. The U.N has yet to my knowledge accepted responsibility for this. And why should they? The U.N is already in a position that it feels above the law. If it just had a little more control over that pesky old "free press" then this would not even be a story. The problem is the same as it has always been. We either trust in God, or we build up a man or men, place them in a place of power and put our trust in them. The latter has always failed sooner or later.

To say that the UN intentionally introduced Cholera is insane.

The intent of the UN workers were pure. They were there to help, and they did a lot of good. One person might have unintentionally caused people to get sick, but it was the earthquake that destroyed any pure water sources or sanitary facilities, and the UN workers brought in clean water, food, tents, and set up latrines that saved millions of lives.

WE in the US are used to being the cops of the world and trying to save everyone on our own, but no one appointed us the cops or saviors of the world and we can no longer afford to do so.

It is time for the nations of the world to take the responsibility of protecting and helping themselves. It is time for them to wean themselves from our welfare. They must become responsible and the only way they can do that is by organizing and cooperating. They need to work together to prevent genocide, the exploitation and rape of women, and the elimination of poverty and disease. They are trying and have good goals and plans. Unfortunately it takes a lot more money than they have. http://www.un.org/millenniumgoals/

That's the part that really tells the tale.

...this cholera seems reminiscent of early America where uncooperative natives were introduced to all kinds of diseases "unintentionally" ...but it served it's purpose for progress non the less...

"The population of African and Eurasian peoples in the Americas grew steadily, while the number of the indigenous people plummeted. Eurasian diseases such as smallpox, influenza, bubonic plague and pneumonic plagues devastated the Native Americans who did not have immunity. Conflict and outright warfare with European newcomers and other American tribes reduced populations and disrupted traditional society. The extent and causes of the decline have long been a subject of academic debate, along with its possible characterization as a genocide."

If The U.N were merely used as a tool for debate and discussion then it would not be stepping in as if it were a governing force. Nations such as the U.S would offer help and if Haiti accepted we could help.

Once the U.N has enough power there will be no "independent" or sovereign nations to stand up to it in situations as this. I agree with you Al that nations should become self sufficient rather than dependent upon welfare from the U.S or anyone else. I see the danger here being that the U.N is trying to move into a "leadership" position in matters that it should not be in at all. We can be a world of independent nations and live as a community and be good neighbors, helping one another when needed. The point here is when you get something like the U.N in place with to much power and which answers to no one, who will reign in the U.N if it steps out of line? There will be no check in place to balance the situation.
