Twilight: Please Explain the Appeal

There are plenty of popular things that I’m not into, but I can at least see why they might appeal to someone else. Graphic novels. The Kindle. Sports. But when it comes to the rabid popularity of Twilight, I’m honestly at a loss. After years of wondering what all the hype was about, I bit the bullet and watched the first Twilight movie when it showed up on Showtime. And it was quite honestly one of the worst things I’ve ever seen (and I’ve seen a LOT of crap). So can anyone explain its appeal to me?

* Bella is a horrible role model.
I shudder to think of the number of teenage girls who want to model themselves after swoony, breathless Bella. She has zero personality, no apparent hobbies or passions of her own, and is completely willing to sacrifice herself for the first guy she falls for…at the ripe old age of 17. That girl needs to get her own life, get the hell out of Forks, and discover what the world has to offer.

* It is not a “chaste” love story.
Apparently one of the primary reasons parents are so willing to let their preteens, tweens, and teens get swept up in the Twilight madness is because there is no sex going on in the stories. Hell, vampires can’t even kiss a human without major complications. But the movie is still chock full of tortured longing, sexual tension, heavy panting, overly emotional declarations, and all the other crap that teens go through. And it’s perfectly clear that if Bella and Edward were able to bone without problems, they totally would. So if parents are using Twilight as a way to teach their kids about waiting to have sex, they’d be better off, you know, actually talking to their kids about sex.

* These guys are not sexy.
I may be a bit biased since I was young during the last vampire craze, way back in the yesteryears of the 1990s when Anne Rice novels were hugely popular, and everyone saw Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Interview with the Vampire. Those vampires were sexy AND dangerous, which just helped to add to their sexiness. The Twilight vampires are whiny, emo, and…sparkly? And don’t even get me started on how creepy it is that there are “Twilight moms” who lust after them. If a middle-aged guy was drooling over a teenage girl, he’d be labeled a pervert and a pedophile, but if a middle-aged woman has her knickers in a knot over a teenage boy, everyone’s OK with it? That’s taking a double standard to an insanely creepy new level.

These are just my main issues with Twilight, as I don’t have the energy or the interest to get into the horrible acting, major plot holes, and plodding pacing. Are the novels much better than the movie? I know I’ve been disappointed with the Harry Potter movies after loving the books, so is this a similar issue of the movie not living up to its source material? Or is it simply a case of someone, somewhere decided Twilight was the new “it” thing, and everyone else just drank the Kool-Aid? Because on artistic merit alone, I can’t even justify it as a guilty pleasure, as guilty pleasures are supposed to have something pleasurable about them.

A bunch of hemophiliac, emaciated looking young people that have no common sense. Whining teen soap opera. Not my idea of entertainment.

The old Hammer Dracula was more to my liking. Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing...those were the guys.

Bella was deliberately created with a blank personality. In that way , it becomes easier for women and girls to cut and paste her own persona into the character of Bella.

Edward is a mysterious, dark creation, the bad boy that can be made good by the true love of a good woman. Many different psychological attacks are made upon the guileless women that see this film, using every trick in the book to attach them emotionally to the character of Edward.

When I started to explain to some of my younger friends that Edward is a 119 year old man, using his experience and supernatural powers to seduce a teenager, They thanked me not so politely for ruining their fantasy.

Sadly, while those of us past our teenage years are not swept up in the hysteria, this seems to be just the latest version of teen idolization. Whether it was a Partridge family member, New Kid on the Block, or Backstreet Boy, there always are unexplainable phenomena which grip teenagers in the throes of infatuation. While we all would prefer to think our personal fixations were justified, it's just a rite of passage from adolescence into something approaching adulthood.

Although I'm most at a loss for the "Twilight" moms which are far more disturbing to me and consider this a quandary capable of exploding my head.

I just found there to be a lot of disturbing elements to "Twilight" that I'd hate to see young women taking to heart. The popularization of cheesy pop music is one thing, the glorification of codependent and unhealthy romantic attachments is something completely different.

I suppose I just consider it Darwinism and make sure to keep my distance. Hopefully, someone with your sensibility creates something with a better message and it catches on.

In particular, scroll down for the details of the last book, "Breaking Dawn." In which Bella gets pregnant with a vampire child. While waiting to go to the hospital, she trips, displaces her placenta, and vomits a "fountain of blood." So what does her husband do?

"Edward rips open Bella's uterus and delivers the baby. He rips open her uterus. With his teeth. Then stabs her with a vampire venom-filled syringe."

Then Jacob, the sidekick werewolf, "imprints" on the newborn baby girl -- meaning that he falls in love with her. "It means that the two of them are now destined to be together, no matter what." Additionally, the vampire baby "is going to grow rapidly to seventeen and then stop growing. Jacob is going to marry her, and she will be permanently underage."

Yep. There's more, but I can't do it justice.

27 months ago: Interesting questions with credit to "Francine":

Would a Jewish vampire be afraid of a Star of David?

Can you hold off a vampire with a sun lamp?

Can a vampire catch AIDS?

Do vegetarian vampires get blood from a turnip?

Do schizophrenic vampires have holes in their own neck?

Should you invite Mormon vampire missionaries into your home, or should you send them back to their "stake"?

Would a Muslim vampire be afraid of a Qu'ran?
27 months ago: The only thing that confuses me about Twilight is how the characters are considered 'sexy'. Um, wtf? NONE of them are the least bit attractive (the black one has cool locs, though), they're all too skinny, and HELLO, are people forgetting most of them are TEENAGERS? They're basically KIDS.

Unless you were twelve, no one (in their right mind)truly enjoyed the first movie...ALL the subtleties, that made it such a captivating series on the page, were LOST in that first movie. It was a joke. A shell. It was a commercial-length parody. So until you've gone back and read the series (like big boys do, instead of going for the crappy "Cliff's Notes" movie) don't knock the Twilight experience. In short, don't judge the book by it's movie. Shame on you! ;)

A woman is most attracted to those who smell as different as possible. The reason is a greater mix of genes would provide the healthiest offspring. This could explain why good girls are attracted to "Bad Boys". Vampires are the ultimate "Bad boys" (unless maybe a werewolf).

Bella's actually a great role model. She's an avid reader, she gets straight A's in school, and is genuine and honest. She's not really that interested in dating, but would rather do her homework, read a good book, or spend time with her father or talking to her mother.

Bella is also almost unrealistically mature. She does all the cooking for her household and she's amazingly unselfish. She refuses to accept charity or gifts from others, preferring to earn her own way, despite having a rich boyfriend. And she also has a good work ethic in her job at Forks Outfitters.

And she ends up getting into Dartmouth University, of all places. An Ivy League school.

She's actually a better role model than most teens in books and movies that are aimed at teenagers.

As for "sex" in the books...

The story of Bella/Edward/Jacob is actually an allegory for teenage male restraint. Our society is such that teenage boys play the part of predator in sexual/dating relationships. (Ask any father of a daughter about predators and he'll know what I'm talking about.) Teenage boys who show restraint are attractive to women, for obvious reasons (nobody wants to be the victim of a predator). Twilight books (and most vampire stories) are just one big metaphor for this idea of restraint and its merits/attractiveness.

Also, the reason you're not "understanding" the fandom is that your judgments are based on a movie that isn't why most fans like Twilight. They're fans of the books. Seeing them visualized in movies is just an added benefit. I think most people who have read the books know the movies aren't that good. But they love them for at least attempting to bring the books to life in a way that is respectful and somewhat true to the core of the story.

Ant teens that want to model after the type of behaviour described (remember this is supposed to be fiction) has some serious emotional issues.

27 months ago: it's like this:
80% of all people are stupid, bad educated, and easy to impress. so i think thats the problem with the fans. or they are just young and so they get my out-of-jail-card.

and don't bother to read the books. if you couldn't watch the movie without screeming, you won't be able to read it. it's just more c**p on a stick for you to chew on.

it's written for young teens (12 or something) because they really easy to impress with the "romance".

i saw an interwiev once, with the autor stephenie meyer. and she told the audience of twilight somthing like this:
she was writing he first book when she was at home alone with here 3 smal kids. her husband was at work and she staid at home to take care of them.

so i ask you: isn't that the actually example she wants to give us with bella? bella is not dating, because she waits for the "right man" to show her the world. as if she didn't have her own eyes in her empty head.
And why in the world someone as old as the cullens wants to live together like a family? why a man of 109 whants to live with "mom and dad" and play the eternal childe? Why? THATS CREEPY!!!

there is no role model at all in this books or movie!

(sorry for the mistakes. english is my third language)
