Traffic in India..

Being an Indian, this would be one of the hardest things to write... .. Its a pathetic scenario, which was aptly highlighted by my cousin, who came from the US, had this to say..."The next time, I gonna travel here, I will carry a hockey bat, and will be travelling in a jeep with a thickhard bumper in front"....

The best time to travel is around morning, when no one is around... Post that, it is absolutely impossible to travel, without traffic.. There are several reasons for traffic being really bad in India

People want to show off..
They hardly care about turns
They are not ready to wait
No one cares about the traffic signals... They feel its take guts to break traffic rules
And most of the time, people vent their anger of having a stupid day, on the road...
And I hardly see anyone giving way to Ambulances, or slowing down near schools.

One of the most common things that I come across, almost every day is a the proportionality between the jam, and the roads... If there are people coming from 2 ways, there is a two-way block.. and if there are people coming from 4 ways.. there is a 4-way block.

The bad part is it does not see to be improving..The only good thing about is, it cannot get any worse.. It becomes really difficult even for the NRIs( Non Resident Indians), who came back after going abroad.. And no measures are taken to improve this. The authorities are hardly concerned about all this.

Even the ministry is responsible for traffic being stalled... Every time a minister desires to travel on roads, it only adds to the traffic problems, as the all the other roads connecting to the roads on which those guys are travelling are completely stalled... They look more like the kings of the state... rather than being the servants of the state..

The best thing about being Indian is, we got used to this, and plan our travel, so that we travel in the area, and the time, in whcih the traffic is least.. For any tourists, coming to India, it becomes an unpleasant experience, as even though they are aware of the situation,, they cant do much to deal with this.. The situation is the worst in the metros.. and the major cities, where the majority of the population resides...

I think a lot of traffic problems could be solved with better design.

Traffic circles or roundabouts allow the people to keep driving so that would be good for the impatient. There are also far less accidents and the accidents that do occur are minor merging accidents instead of the catastrophic "T-bone accidents that occur at 4-way, stops, or signalized intersections.

They are also cheaper to install and maintain than signals.

Yep, modifying design is important.. but the problem is in India.. roads are narrow.. and people make a hue and cry when something is demolished, especially when its something religious. Its a bit difficult in India to make changes to design, especially in heavily populated areas.

Another way, that is currently being employed on a small scale right now in India, is people give regular updates on the high traffic areas in radio... this was an initiative taken up by the radio guys.. it kind of helps, when you get these updates, so that you can take alternative routes... this should employ more like a process
