Three Patriot Act Provisions Failed in the House

There are now three provisions in the Patriot Act due to expire on February 28th. The House Republicans joined the Democrats in opposing the measure. One provision gives the FBI authorization to do roving wiretaps. The second provision allows the government access to tangible items like library records, and the third is the Intelligence Reform and Terrorist Prevention Act. This provision gives the authorities permission to target people that are not part of a terrorist group.

Several of the new Republican House members expressed doubts about continuing the provisions. The Democrats opposed many parts of the Patriot Act for years. Dennis Kucinich has opposed the measure since 2001. The White House wanted the measure extended to 2013.

The Senate is working on additional proposals that would permanently extend the three provisions until 2013. Both the Senate Judiciary committee and Intelligence committee have competing proposals to extend the provisions.
