The normalization of self-hate

Okay, I haven't been on here in a bit, but I logged back in because something has really been irking me lately.

WHY IS IT 'NORMAL', CONSIDERED OKAY, AND ENCOURAGED FOR PEOPLE TO HATE THEMSELVES??!!!!!

First of all, WTF?!! Secondly, it's NOT normal OR natural and should NEVER be! Forget opinion, this is the TRUTH! People don't naturally hate themselves, not until they get around idiots!

As my username implies, I wear locs. That means I wear my natural hair. For a black female, it's kind of a big deal (though for me, not as much). I'm ALL about natural hair, as I see straightening methods as a form (and an aggressive one) of self-hate. However, I also believe in 'Live and Let Live'. Meaning, as long as people leave me alone about MY hair, I won't say anything about what they do to theirs.

I'm also a firm believer in the HAES/Size Acceptance movement. This encourages people to just live their lives, regardless of what size they may be. If they want to gain weightr, lose weight, or do nothing at all, that's their decision, but they shouldn't be made to feel bad for it, or for how they look. I'd prefer if people didn't care about weight at all, honestly.

I get people telling me all the time how hair SHOULD be straightened, and I get people telling me all the time how people SHOULD be concerned about weight. What? WHY?!!!

This is what irritates me. Why should I or anyone else be EXPECTED to do such things just because someone else does them? Why should ANYONE hate themselves because some other fool is unhappy?

Why is it encouraged for people to hate themselves instead of just living life? Don't tell me it's not, because I KNOW it is. As soon as you start encouraging people to stop internalizing other people's standards and hatred, you get looks, and people making claims of trying to start trouble.

Some woman actually told me that it's a problem if people DON'T think about weight all the time. The heck? For most of history weight wasn't an issue like it is now. It was only in the last hundred years or so that people were encouraged to hate their bodies the way they do. The worst thing about that woman's comment was that it came from another black woman with natural hair who obviously doesn't see her hypocrisy. So, it's okay to not care about relaxers and other straightening methods and encourage others to wear their natural hair, but wrong to NOT care about weight and encourage others to not hate themselves or be obsessed with weight? Whatever, stupid lady. Don't give me BS claims of 'health' because people would be better off just going about their business instead of stressing about every little thing.

It's like people just CAN'T be satisfied unless everyone else hates SOMETHING about themselves.

You are obviously anti capitalist because if women stopped spending thousands of dollars each year trying to conform to our impossible standards of beauty then the economy would collapse.

There are trillions of dollars spent trying to convince women that they have something wrong with them and that if they would just buy that brand of mascara, or fingernail polish, or underwear, that their life would change, the sun would come out, that men would fall at their feet, and the world would treat them better. A large part of our economy is built upon making women feel insecure.

Our priorities are entirely out of balance. For the amount of money spent just on cosmetics we could save millions of lives by providing water and sanitation to third world countries. See: http://www.worldwatch.org/node/764

She does not have to be dressed up or dressed to kill to turn me on.

The smell or fragrance of clean female skin, is a turn on by its self.

No matter the size, the clothes, as long as she looks like a fresh farm girl look, she will turn me on.

You girls don't need to waste thousands of dollars to find a man.

All you have to do is smile at us, and you have us at "Hello".

That is how much power you have over us.

A smile has enough heat to melt our hearts.

I tell it like it is, I pull no punches, tell no lies, and I am as I am

To me, anything other than washing your hair to keep it clean would be not natural. Straightened hair is still hair, just altered to fit the whims of the wearer. Lokked hair is also just hair, which has been manipulated artificially using the fixative of your choice to fit your style. It certainly doesn't grow that way naturally.

I am working on a formula that will turn curly hair straight, but it won't straighten the hair you already have. It actually makes your hair grow straight, by infusing certain insect extracts into the scalp. It also makes people with graying hair return to their natural hair color from the roots.

As far as weight goes, it's just one of the big scares to come down the pike lately. As long as a person isn't obese, they shouldn't starvwe themselves to fit some kind of skinny expectation.
