The War With Iran

For the last eight months I have been waiting to see a red flash across the TV screen that reveals Israeli fighter jets have bombed several nuclear targets in Iran. Fortunately this has not happened and I am finally breathing a sigh of relief because the probability of war with Iran is dwindling. However, there is still a loose cannon on deck that could engulf the Middle East in war. Israel has not come to terms with the possibility of a nuclear Iran and it places the United States in an uncomfortable political position.

On the surface the Obama administration still wants to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons yet many deadlines have passed without a hint of effective sanctions on Iran. This is not a sign of political weakness but rather the admission of diplomatic defeat.

Sanctions have been in place against Iran for the better part of 35 years and failed to bring Iran to the table with meaningful negotiations. Placing new sanctions would require the full support of both Russia and China. However, Russia and China benefit by having United States forces tied up in the Middle East and allows them to expand their spheres of influence with little resistance. Helping the United States would go against their incentives. So short of a full military strike there is nothing the United States can do to stop nuclear proliferation by Iran. However, Israel is in a different political situation were a military strike is an acceptable solution.

Israel's foreign policy has always been driven by a fight for survival and little has changed since the nation's birth. Iran has been a constant thorn in the side of Israel since the end of the Iraq/Iran war in the 1980s. Iran now has considerable influence in the Middle East through its proxies of Hamas, Hezbollah and many other militant groups. The long-term goal of Iran is to be the regional political powerhouse and build an effective and wealthy commercial petro-empire. Iran has large oil fields that it has been unable to effectively pump due to the many sanctions on oil equipment. To survive Iran imports almost half of its refined oil needs. This situation has led the Iranian leadership to use military proxies to gain influence over many of its neighbors allowing the nation to import more equipment through China and Russia.

The development of nuclear energy accomplishes two goals for Iran. First, creating effective nuclear power will drastically cut the nations reliance of imported fuels. Second, having an atomic weapon is the best deterrent bar none in the world and would force the world to lift sanctions that have been in place for decades. Iran has very little to lose at this point in history by developing a nuclear weapon.

Israel on the other hand cannot even entertain the idea of Iran developing a nuclear weapon due to the small size of the country. Even a crude weapon would cripple Israel and open the flood gates of its many enemies. The chances of Iran using an atomic weapon as an offensive weapon are slim to say the least. Iran knows Israel possesses atomic weapons and it could not hope to win an atomic firefight with Israel. The problem is what if radicalism in the Iranian leadership allows such a suicidal bombing to happen? There lies the great danger for Israel.

So what is going to happen? I have a very hard time believing Israel is going to sit around and let Iran continue to refine radioactive materials and the notion that an air strike would not be effective is ridiculous. It would take less than half of Israel's air force to completely destroy or damage all of Iran's nuclear sites. It is Iranian retaliation that worries the United States and Israel. Iran would use its proxies in Syria, Palestine, Iraq and in other nations to completely interrupt oil coming out of the Middle East. This could severely hurt recovering economies across the world and possibly force the United States to respond with military force, engaging our nation in a third Middle East conflict.

The situation is incredibly complicated and is on the brink of collapsing on a daily basis. How Washington responds to an Israeli air strike will test the Obama administration to its limit. Let us all hope Israel keeps a cool head for everyone's sake.

25 months ago: Pakistan has a bomb, North Korea has one, and I have not head of their enemies disappearing in a mushroom cloud.
25 months ago: Colorado.

I respect your opinion too much to believe you really put our ally (for now) Pakistan and bass ackwards North Korea on the same footing as Iran.

Really?

25 months ago: No I do not but them on the same footing. However, Pakistan is barely hanging onto power and it would take only one radical to launch an A-bomb on India or Israel. Just because a nation gets a weapon, does not mean it uses it. Think of it more as a defense that never has to be used.
25 months ago: You are correct, but we must treat Iran and Pakistan differently.

Iran needs to be smacked up side the head.

Pakistan needs to be coddled.

25 months ago: Colorado, good post. Despite the heated rhetoric it is HIGHLY unlikely that there will ever be attacks by Israel into Iran or Iran into Israel. Israel has nuclear weapons...Iran will never attack them. Israel thinks it is possible (even if it is highly unlikely) that Iran has a nuclear weapon and will never attack Iran until it has absolute proof that Iran does not have one. Assuming both States have a bomb then it is nearly certain that neither would launch a war against each other (see M.A.D. theory).

More importantly, Iran is the key for Israel if they want peace. If they can establish a working set of agreements with Iran (economic and diplomatic) the region would have a much higher chance of stabilizing. The United States has the ability to play a key role in this. Iran is big, and powerful (economically, diplomatically and militarily (kinda)). If the United States, and it seems as if President Obama is willing to try this approach, takes the time to try and really establish Iran as a regional leader it would go a long way towards stabilizing the Middle-East which of course has benefits for the United States as well as Israel, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia etc. etc.

25 months ago: I agree completely. I do not like the anti-semitic messages that Iran spews forth, but they have few options because of the sanctions that are outdated and have never been since the revolution. We invest in their economy then they will become a regional leader.

25 months ago: Do not get me wrong, we should not give them money. But let us move forward with dropping sanctions that only breed mistrust from the Iranian people and give that radical president an example of the cruel and unfair American Empire (I dont think that but thats how we look.) Why would they give us their nuclear fuel to refine if we keep an unfair stranglehold on their economy. Iran is not a saint, but nor our we perfect. We helped create this mess, we need to start slowly reversing it to stop Iran from stockpiling atomic weapons.
25 months ago: Colorado.

There you have it. You have identified the dichotomy.
Multiplying the sanctions ten fold will only breed appreciation, admiration and help the Iranian people.

Screw Iran's radical president. We aught to "cruel" his @ss down his well. Period.

And we sure as #### are as perfect a nation as has ever existed in human civilization. No, idiotic Jimmy Carter created this mess, and Obama is going to make it much, much, much worse.

You've spelled out the dichotomy absolutely clearly.

I suggest Jimmy Carter proved which way works. Respectfully.

the other reason to prove your note is very crude, is that you do not know that on of the most effective missiles of hizbollah in the so called 33 days conflict, was kite. which is hard to target for the American antimissile systems. ;)

I have all the note in my mind. so "lets go to the weald, which weald? that weald that names deer, oh yes! child of hunter have an ambush there for her. oh yes! hey child do not hunt my prey, do not hunt my deer of the weald, because the spots of she is just like my lovely girl. oh yes." anyway we are just living in the sound of rockets not in the sound of violins. one day maybe!
3.In Iran there is more than just this musics, and also more than the music.

for your knowledge. as I know.
In shia believes Doomsday does not comes first. the zohoor is before that.and not only Ahmadinejad but also every shia believes that people should try to make it sooner.
The man's name, who shia believes will come and zohoor(comming) will happen, is Mahdi. and the other is Jesus.(as you may know muslims do not believe that he is killed) they call this (rajat). and also one other prophet who's name is khezr. anyway. the most dangerous branch is here. almost all of shia muslims believe that they should make peace, and also culture and religious more powerful so the zohoor will become sooner. specially they should have 313 mans who have powerful leadership skills. but there is a dangerous secret part that believes that to make it sooner there should be a big war. anyway it is much like Armageddon that others believe that will happen. anyway. they are called 12ie. or in Iran "hojatieh".
25 months ago: Honestly, I thought Muslims believed that Jesus is dead, so it is a surprise. I myself am a Christian but its interesting to know what you told me. I dont know anything about Shia Islam but I'm not very good in theology anyway :) About the big war spoke Nostradamus but I prefer not to think about that, for now at least :) If such time arrives, I'll go to Argentina to stay with some distant relatives :)

25 months ago: In the Russian press there are very, very interesting articles on Iran and Central Asia. From there Im learning that Israel is courting the countries of Central Asia, and has so far had tremendous success with Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan, and also with the regional giant Kazakhstan. These countries badly need foreign allies and also deeply distrust their Islamic mentors, Turkey, Iran and the countries from the Arabian peninsula. They might also be used as springboards to launch attacks on Iran and, as in the case with Azerbaijan, they even have territorial aspirations. Russia itself is very unsure as to what to do with Iran. What it's sure about is that it doesn't want the US interfering in Central Asia. Not so about Israel though.

25 months ago: Good post Colorado. You are correct that the situation is very complicated and in all likelihood we will not be able to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. That is the big Bush Lesson. Of the three countries in the "Axis of Evil" Korea got nuclear weapons and doesn't have to worry about anyone invading their country, Iraq had no Weapons of Mass Destruction and they were invaded.

I think that Iran has a history of not attacking other countries so I don't think we need worry about their dropping one on Israel because they know they would be totally destroyed if they did. Deterrence worked for US and Russia, why wouldn't it work with Iran and Israel?

Nuclear power is a great source of pride to every Iranian. It is an indication that they have entered the 21st century. If Israel would foolishly try to destroy their bomb making facilities which are dispersed and hardened, they might delay the program but they would solidify every Iranian behind their government, in their hatred of the West. Now half the country is against the government and a great social movement is taking place to overthrow the Ayatollahs. Why would Israel or the United States jeopardize that?

I think our best hope is in getting all of the nuclear powers, including Israel, India, and Pakistan, which have not signed the nuclear nonproliferation agreement, to sign on. If Obama can get North Korea and Iran to sign on and agree not attack anyone else (no 1st strike) and not to send weapon making technology to other developing nations, we might still be able to retain some sanity in the world.

Obama has gotten China and Russia to move pretty far and now they are both willing to have sanctions against Iran. Perhaps if the sanctions work they will pressure Iran to join the rest of the nuclear nations but to act civilized.
