It is getting so bad that the only ones that have a chance to get a new job are the ones that already have a job. Many corporations are discriminating against the unemployed because they think that the unemployed are loosing their job skills. http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2011-08...

Many House Democrats introduced legislation that would make it illegal for employers and employment agencies to hold applicants' unemployment against them. http://smartunemployment.com/2011/new-bi...

Another problem is that companies and corporations have found ways to make their employees do more work. This is a problem for the unemployed because they are now expected to know more than they did before. This is how that works. The Gizmo plant lays off half its workforce blaming the recession and low demand for gizmos. Then they have their remaining workers do twice the work with new automated processes. Bob used to work on the lathe before he was laid off. Now to get his job back he needs to know how to program a CAM (computer automated manufacturing). Likewise Jim used to be in sales but now to get his job back he has to know about Sales, Marketing, and know how to use the computer to data-mine the internet.

Meanwhile the Gizmo plant is making record profits, but they don't hire more people because they don't need to, and they don't give their current employees a share of those profits, because they are just plain greedy. During this period of high unemployment, corporations are laying people off just to boost their profits.

"Following the recession of the 1980s, 28% of the economic growth in recovery went to corporate profits, while 25% went to boost the wages and salaries of ordinary workers. Today, 88% of the economic recovery has gone to boosting corporate profits. As a widely cited earlier version of Sum and McLachlan's report finds (pdf), only 1% – that's one out of every $100 – has gone to wages and salaries for the folks who clearly need it most."
http://www.commondreams.org/view/2011/08...

Many of the jobs of the past are not coming back. The economic theories of Adam Smith are no longer working. The corporations actually like high unemployment. This forces wages down and in the tight job market they can select the best and the brightest. Only those with the best education in the latest fields and with the latest job experience has a chance of getting a job. Because few Americans are going into engineering schools and getting advanced degrees, when companies do hire, they often have to recruit PHD's from other countries.

Capitalism and the free market will do nothing to help the unemployment crisis. Tax cuts to create jobs will not work. The corporations have had tax cuts for the past 12 years without creating jobs. They are sitting on 2.5 trillion dollars and making record profits. They don't need even more tax cuts. Supply Side Economics no longer works. The money given to the rich and the corporations no longer trickles down to the middle class, and the corporations will only expand and hire more when demand requires it.

From now on we need to work with new rules, we need Demand Side Economics. In the future we need to shift from a consumer driven constantly growing economy that is dependent on debt, to a sustainable steady state economy where people only buy what they need when they can pay for it. http://steadystaterevolution.org/sustain...

The entire reason that most corporations exist, is to make money for the share holders, even if they ship the jobs overseas and destroy the earth to do that. We need a new type of corporation that is dedicated to improving the community and whose main function is to provide jobs and stability for that community. The new corporations called "Certified B Corporations" are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on their employees, suppliers, community, consumers, and environment. http://www.bcorporation.net/

Since the Free Market and conservative politicians have abandoned the unemployed it is up to the government to help the chronically unemployed to become productive members of society again. It would be good to reinstate the WPA or the Civilian Conservation Corps that Franklin Roosevelt started to help get us out of the last depression. This teaches people how to work and encourages the work ethic. Programs like Job Corps help the inner city youth who are lacking in education and job skills obtain both. One of the best jobs bills out is from Democratic Rep. Jan Schakowsky who has introduced legislation that would create 2.2 million jobs and reduce the unemployment rate 1.3 points, by targeting the chronically unemployed and those most in need of job training. http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazi...

This is probably the ONLY way to bring unemployment rate down in the short term. For the long term we need a revised tax program that does not reward corporations for moving jobs overseas, and that would encourage the new type of B corporations that are dedicated to helping people and providing jobs to enrich the community.

If Corporations are legally considered people, shouldn't they also act as responsible members of the community?

Programs such as these help people get back to work, especially when they are loyal workers and put a lot of years into a company that outsources their jobs. Training and education produces productive people that will in turn carry their own weight which will boost our economy and put money back into it. If people have no where to turn because of this sick Government, the State should be obligated to help train. What, we don't deserve anything? Let the Government do what they want and be quiet and take it? NO

You think I like that, but I stand up for what I believe. People don't read or answer anything I say except for some very nice people that I have come to really appreciate.
I will write to someone, and they will answer someone else and won't answer me. I paid my dues in life to speak. Why shouldn't I delete what I say when no one reads or answers my comments. Sometimes one I know of was horrible to me and was allowed to get away with it. That is upsetting.

21 months ago: Cypress did you see what you did here? You set a poor example on how to treat people who want to write on the site confidently. It didn't matter that you didn't agree, but your actions right here were uncalled for. I said I wanted to remove my comments, which I have a right to on this site, and you forced me into not being able to do that. You were only interested in putting me down with your words so that you could keep that stupid comment you made by saying that the State coerced me. What are you trying to accomplish? You are going to drive people away. You showed me that you out and out have as bad behavior as the rest of them. COPY THAT I don't think I will write on this site that you love so much and claim to be yours only. You showed a side of ignorance. I thought you were a decent Guy.

21 months ago: Dear Cypress, I don't understand what you are getting at.
What is it about me that annoys you so much.
Why am I so important to you because I make a decision to remove something. Isn't that why there is a deletion button on the site. Why is it that you support nothing important and have nothing at all to say when you write. In fact, I do write to many people who I love conversing with and have something of value to say, and I don't delete. I consider them friends. Seems mostly it is only you and a few jerks that can't take a women's opinion for which I delete my comments. Actually, I'm sorry I write to them because they turn out to be complete fools and I find I don't want to waste my time.
Brings to mind. I wish I could delete Rick Perry from running for office. This Country would certainly go down hill. There that is for the World to see.
Who cares anyway? You got the wrong person if you think I care about anyone who doesn't have anything more to do then rial woman. I certainly will not delete this one. Cypress did you ever realize that you can't connect with people and that is your problem. Try it sometime many it will make you more humane. Anyway it isn't your business. But, if I write to a person that turns out to be a jerk, I don't want to be associated with them. I find if I am good to them as I am with you that they get wrose. It's funny, you never protect me from anything that the trolls do. If you want to pick on someone, pick on your own family members. I have a right to delete what I say. You want total control over this site, and I don't think anything you have said so far is bright enough to do that.

22 months ago: There are many young people who have absolutely no job skills. Something like 30% are addicted to gaming. In inner city areas where there are little if any chances of jobs crime is the only option.

Many young people go into the military to teach them discipline, and job skills, and how to work.

But what if you are philosophically opposed to killing or being shot at? Shouldn't there be a similar service the young can get into that will teach them discipline, job skills and the love of work?

That is what Job Corps and the other programs in Schakowsky's proposal does. It takes kids that have never had job skills and teaches those skills to them. There has to be an alternative to the military to build up character and discipline.

The free market does not address this need. The Supply side right wing conservatives do not have a single idea of how to help these unskilled uneducated chronically unemployed. The free market just takes the best and discards the rest as worthless. But everyone has the potential to be productive tax paying members of society if given training and education.

Parents are too overprotective. They should get their kids out to work early enough so they know what responsibility is. I know of one person who owns his own company and has his daughters and sons working for him. They walk around making remarks and using their acquired superiority on those that work for the father. They collect big salaries which is not earned and don't have a brain in their heads to go out on their own. They don't live in reality and aren;t concerned with a future. They are spoiled with material things and taught nothing that is useful. They live in the moment thinking their Mommy and Daddy will take care of them forever. The parents set them up to lose. Apparently, they don't care whether they are detrimental to others. The Father gives them big salaries, assistants to push around, and big offices for their self-esteem that masks what they really are.

Investments in the people of the country pay off with about $3 going into the community for every dollar spent. That is what pulled us out of the depression (along with the GI Bill to give soldiers an education and affordable housing.)

Poll after poll tells us that the vast majority of people want Congress to concentrate on jobs. The Congressional Black Caucus has introduced 40 jobs bills and then there is the Schakowsky bill. All of these have been blocked and haven't even made it to the floor for debate because of the Republicans who haven't introduced a single jobs bill.

When Obama Introduces his Jobs Plan on the 8th I hope the Republicans stop doing everything they can to harm the economy and start caring about the people without a job. their only idea is more tax cuts to businesses that are swimming in cash already. Tax cuts will never provide jobs for the chronically unemployed. The only way to get people to work immediately is to hire them. We have a lot of things that need fixing in this country. Lets put people to work.

I've been writing letters and faxing them out to Senators and Representatives stating just that. Laws can be made to stop this descrimination against people who have a gap in their employment. It isn't fair, especially when they weren't to blame. I want to see more action taken. Americans fight back with their intellect and not with fist. Hopefully, the President will be behind this and stand strongly for what is right. Rush Limbaugh is advising the House Speaker Boehner not to allow the President to speak. This is going too far.

How can anyone say "We" know your pattern? Do they know the pattern of some that are disgustingly deceitful, have bad habits, arrogant, and belligerent or am I noticed because I care about human rights? I don't know what the answer is but again I apologize. I don't know who "We" are that was referred to for some kind of support against me. I'm harmless. I would say that one person whose actions I didn't much care for should speak for himself and be a confident individual and not have to reach for others to back up what he says against a female. That action ruins the site and drives people away. I've been to Texas many times and almost all the men I met were gentlemen, and this was an unforgettable quality they possessed.
I do stand by supporting the people and giving them back their lives with jobs and help from the State. I watched the news last night and the people that were interviewed said almost the exact same thing that we agree upon. They showed a job fair in DC, and they said that they won't hear from anyone after submitting a resume. The Government needs to step up and not just talk about it to look good. I believe Obama is going to have a rough time going in order to convince the stubborn minds of the Republican Party. They are hurting everyone.

Make the Corporation stop manipulating the workforce until it dries up. Those are deep concerns. Until they turn it around, nobody is safe from financial disaster. 21 months ago: I think Sunny is on to something. For the first 100 years of the country, each state used to control corporate charters. They limited them to just a few years, forced them to make their public obligations. The States limited capitalization, debt, and even profits. Perhaps it is time to force corporations to work for the people again? http://www.corporatepolicy.org/pdf/chart...

Now some corporations are all powerful international entities that are too big to control. Instead they control the governments.

OK so lets boycott all of the big guys and only deal with small B corps that are dedicated to hiring locally and helping local communities.

Right now there are only two possibilities For profit corporations and non profit corporations. "The primary goal of a for-profit business as well as its legal duty is to maximize profits for the benefit and interest of its shareholders. Since the primary goal of social enterprise is the fulfillment of a social mission, a for-profit legal structure is not adequate for a social enterprise. Similarly, while the primary goal of a nonprofit organization is to fulfill a social mission, it is legally bound from using its finances for the benefit of private inurement. This means it cannot compete competitively in a market economy and, as a result, has traditionally relied on charitable contributions and government assistance."

B corps can work for the community and also compete. http://www.socialenterprisetrust.org/pdf...

Our current economic system's only goal is profit at any price. It fosters and rewards greed. We need a new system that fosters caring for those in need, which is sustainable and kind to the earth, which rewards innovation. We need change because the free market system is destroying our economy and destroying the planet. http://www.global-economic-symposium.org...

I don't want us to go back to the days where life will be smothered and people giving their hard earned monies to support the rich only.

21 months ago: Al...I wanted to show you this new trend: RV Workkampers

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/michael-th...

Where are the jobs? That question is on the minds of millions of Americans who have lost jobs during the Great Recession. During this historically lean jobs creation period, finding a new job often requires thinking outside the box. And you can't think much further outside the job search box than "workamping" -- also known as work-camping.

"The RV's kitchen slide broke in Eutaw, Alabama, which is in the middle of the middle of nowhere. We managed. We were stuck in the mud in Clarksdale, Mississipi during a launch party for the anthology, Delta Blues. The tow truck driver who pulled our rig out of the mud jackknifed it and broke out the pickup's rear window. Guess I can add my broken wrist to the list of oopsies."

That's how Suzann Ellingsworth described a couple of days in the workamping life she shares with her husband, Dave, as they drive their RV through the southern and plains states looking for work.

That's how Suzann Ellingsworth described a couple of days in the workamping life she shares with her husband, Dave, as they drive their RV through the southern and plains states looking for work.

According to Workamper.com, a workamper is "an adventurous individual who has chosen a wonderful lifestyle that combines ANY kind of part-time or full-time work with RV camping. If you work as an employee, operate a business, or donate your time as a volunteer, AND you sleep in an RV (or on-site housing), you are a Workamper. Workampers generally receive compensation in the form of a free campsite, usually with free utilities (electricity, water, and sewer hookups) and additional wages."

Calling it a "wonderful lifestyle" seems a bit over the top for some workampers. After communicating with Suzann for more than six months and observing the Ellingsworth's ups and frequent downs, it's obvious that workamping is not all fun and games, at least for those who hit the road in need of a job to survive.
Most workamper jobs are of the minimum-wage variety. Workampers generally don't receive unemployment insurance benefits, severance pay or any warning that a job is about to end. Workampers face many of the same job insecurity issues as the millions of Americans who have been downsized due to job outsourcing, financial mismanagement and slow consumer demand for products and services, except workampers are purposely more nimble and have been conditioned to pack up and move to where the jobs are. "We have to be mobile to land a job," said Suzann. Those who become jobless and live in traditional stationary homes aren't usually able to move to another city on a moment's notice.

Since workamping is a nomadic lifestyle, it's difficult to collect a headcount. Steve Anderson, president of Workamper.com, said the most recent workamper survey is from KOA, but it is dated: "Nearly 10 years ago the KOA Corporation gave an estimate that 750,000 were living the workamping lifestyle. Their data was questioned then and at best was an estimated guess. Over the years we have seen our membership remain in the 14,000 range with thousands of others in the dreaming stages of workamping. It is very transitional lifestyle, meaning folks begin and end the lifestyle every day."

"More people are turning to workamping as a way to earn money," said Jaimie Hall Bruzenak, RVlifestyleexperts.com founder and author of Support Your RV Lifestyle! An Insider's Guide to Working on the Road. "I would say it is mixed, though. Some are the traditional retired couples who want to either earn a little money or get a free site while having the chance to travel and stay in beautiful places. There are also those who have been hit

21 months ago: Good Post Sunny. Workcamping sounds like a good alternative for those who have lost their homes. At least they don't have to worry about coming up with a house payment anymore, so they can get by with minimum wage jobs. If they find work, a bicycle to get back and forth to work cuts costs enormously. If only the health care law would kick in early, it would help 50 million without health care.

Computer savvy folks are now applying on line and thankfully there are more and more places that have wifi hot spots they can tie into.

Some of these people can work on computer jobs while on the road telecomuting. http://www.flexjobs.com/

One of the biggest disadvantages of not having a fixed address or home address is it is difficult to apply for work.

I hired several homeless folk by posting on a jobs board at a local shelter/clinic and that establishment allowed the homeless to use an address and phone no. that employers could reach them at.

21 months ago: Al, It looks like it will be the people to turn it all around.

That was a good idea establishing an address and phone number for the homeless. I wish more people would come up with ideas that could be used. It just takes someone who cares. We are trying to bring more food out to the orphans. It is tough because they are outside of the area that most of these big organizations will help.

1. ghetto mart

Noun. Any liquor store in your neighborhood. Usually located on a corner. A Ghetto Mart normally sells malt liquor, cigarettes, candy, cracky snacks (twinkies & nutty bars), microwaveable burritos, Lottery tickets and the like. Produce is usually limited to limes, potatoes and onions. They also stock Brillo pads, but normally keep them behind the counter, as to know who the neighborhood crackheads are.
Also known as a Crack Mart. Ghetto Mart owners are none to pleased to find out that you refer to them as the "Ghetto Mart", they usually say things like, "What's wrong with us?, Why are you dogging us? or, Why can't you just call us Lee's Market, after all that's what the sign say's, dosen't it?"
DJ Willow from Paris: Oh,Dag! were all out of Blunt wraps! I'm going to the Ghetto Mart to stock up, do you want me to get you anything while I'm there?
