The Religion of Reaganism

The Worship of Reagan

I don't often dwell in religious matters, because true believers are immune to rational arguments and facts, but in this case I would like to try to convince those independents who are sitting on the fence not to convert before they think about it.

There is a schism amongst the true believers right now. Perhaps we can take advantage of the dissension in the ranks to instill a little logic and good sense into the equation.

The dissent in the ranks is something like, should Ronald Reagan (blessed be his name) be beatified (The Republicans) or should he be deified (The Tea Party). For those unfamiliar with big words, the question is should Reagan be considered a Saint or a God?

The Republicans retain a little bit of rationality because they realize that not extending the debt limit will cripple the nation and will hurt their meal tickets, the rich and the corporations. They are conflicted, because their number one goal is to defeat Obama, even if that destroys the government in the process. They hate the government and wouldn't mind if it is destroyed (except for the military and the corporate welfare) but they also realize that if Wall Street tanks, then their millions which reside there, may be endangered. Likewise their corporate sponsors are getting extremely nervous because they are being pushed too close to the edge of the cliff. The Republican Leaders are trying to edge away from the cliff.

The House Majority Leader, John Boehner, was momentarily tempted to take Obama's grand $ 4 Trillion debt reduction deal, which would give the Republicans 95% of what they want in exchange for eliminating a few tax breaks to folks that didn't deserve them, but then Boehner was taken to the wood shed by the Tea Party Radicals, and told not to budge an inch even if he got everything he wanted. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/10/us/pol...

Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnel is willing to give Obama a way to avoid the catastrophe if he is willing to take all of the blame. http://hosted2.ap.org/txdam/54828a5e8d9d...

The True Believers are not willing to give an inch. Most of them want to create another economic disaster worse than the one the republicans created before because they think the public will blame Obama for it, and kick him out.

The issue of course is all about Taxes. The tenant that taxes are always bad, and should never be raised, is a central theme of the Religion of Reagon. All but 13 of the Republicans have taken their vows that they will never raise taxes for any reason. In the past the rich paid 90% taxes to help with the war effort. Now they only pay about16%. Now 80% of the people want taxes raised on the rich, but the true believers still believe that the public is demanding no new taxes. Why are they so divorced from reality?
A bit of background is needed to understand why.

The nation's economics can be explained by likening it to our own family economics. We can spend more than we make, by putting purchases on the credit card. The monthly bill is similar to our countries deficit. The total of all of the bills is equivalent to the National Debt. In our family, people have to work to pay the bills. The national equivalent to work, is Taxes. In our family, even if we stop buying stuff we can't afford, we still have to pay the credit card bill for the stuff we bought before we got smart, even if that means getting another job to do it.

Now Reagan (blessed be his name) realized that most people don't like their jobs, just like most people don't like taxes, so he convinced people that if they really, really, believed, that they wouldn't have to pay taxes, or pay for their purchases. In fact if they really had faith, they could buy some magic money beans that if planted with the proper rituals, would grow more money than the beans cost. (Tax Cuts create revenue) They could all quit their jobs and not have to worry about paying the bills. All they would have to do is buy the magic beans.

At the same time Reagan (the Blessed) convinced people that government wasn't the solution to problems, that it was the source of the problems. But what he really meant was that government that helped people was bad, but government that helped the military and the corporations was good. So while railing at the evil of government, he doubled the size of it, by shifting funding away from those evil welfare queens and giving twice as much corporate welfare to the military and the corporations.

But since He was eliminating revenue while at the same time as he increased spending for the Military Industrial Complex, he had to put the purchases on the credit card.

America went from the world's largest creditor nation to the world's greatest debtor nation. Of course it was a big scam, and while Reagan (blessed be his name) tripled the debt, he also raised taxes 11 times. But that action happened behind the curtain. The true believers wouldn't believe such heresy. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-2...

Reagan (the great) eliminated the Fairness Doctrine and then sent his preachers over the airwaves to spread the word unhindered by facts or the truth.

So who are those True Believers who were so willing to believe the illusion? The Christian Conservatives were ready made to believe that black was white and up was down, because they already believed in Bible tales instead of the real world. It was just another baby step to believe that Tax Cuts created Revenue. It was another baby step that allowed them to believe that showering the rich with money benefited the poor. Another baby step to ignore climate science. Another baby step to believe that it was really Fanny and Freddie that tricked the poor blacks into buying houses they couldn't afford that caused the economic meltdown instead of the Wall Street Bankers. Another baby step to believe that all of the bills run up by the Republicans, the doubling of military spending, the two wars, the huge tax cuts to the rich which created most of the National Debt, is all Obama's fault. Another Baby step to think that they don't have to pay for the purchases that they themselves have made. Another baby step to believe that only Democratic Social spending causes debt. Another baby step to believe that they can balance a 50% deficit by eliminating all of the social programs (14% of the budget).

Today's Tea Party Radicals are true believers in the deepest sense of the words. All of those baby steps have taken them quite a distance from reality so they no longer trust any experts or scientists. They only believe the preachers on Fox and hate radio. Like Frankenstein's creature, Reagan (cursed be his name) created a Monster that no longer listens to the leaders of the party and it is determined to destroy us all.

They forced Obama to buy more of Bush's Magic Beans which doubled the credit card bill. Now they think that if they can just stop the Democratic spending while still wasting trillions on the military, that they can balance the budget. They even believe that they don't have to pay the bills for all of the stuff they have already bought, like Bush's magic beans. All of the above foolishness has become Dogma, and anyone that doesn't spout the same nonsense is excommunicated.

The rich and the corporations must be showered with even more magic beans, and none of them are expected to pay their fair share, The Faithful have to believe that the magic beans, that never sprouted before, will work this time – if they only believe. That is why there will be no debt ceiling extension if the Tea Party has any say. They live in a different world completely divorced from reality. They are religious Jihadists willing to destroy themselves and everyone else for their religion. They believe that if they just have enough faith, that defaulting on our debt for the first time in history, sending us into a depression and creating a world wide crisis, will actually be a good thing.

Too bad they have to drag all of the rational people in the world
down with them.
UPDATE - 23 months ago
Those who worship Reagan worship a false memory of what Reagan was like. In fact Reagan increased the debt ceiling 17 times and never held America hostage. Check out this video of his own words: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6nNJiJsm...

No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can not serve both God and Mammon.
—Matthew 6:19-21,24

The Conservatives do not follow the advise of Jesus, which was to rid themselves of their riches and to help the poor. Instead the worshipers of Reagan do the opposite. They persecute the poor and infirm and value money above all else.

The official Republican plan is to eliminate medicare and Social Security and give the rich another trillion dollars.
23 months ago: Al,

I am trying hard to understand you... on one hand you say we need to keep "religion out of politics", then you condemn Conservatives for not bringing their "religious" teachings of Jesus into their Political practice...

...weren't you the one SCREAMING "separation or Church and State???????
How can we take you seriously?
23 months ago: As the Republican plans have aired and become public, a thought has become more apparent to me. 1% of the population controls 99% of the wealth has been said several times. This might not be precise, but the idea that small percent of our population controls most of our wealth rings true.

This small percent, it appears, strongly favor Republicans. And Republicans represent these interests first.

Well, how many Republicans do we have in Congress? We have something approaching 50% and these many Republicans speak for the 1%, or the tiny bit of population that is wealthy.

It doesn't make sense to me. 99% of us are not wealthy. If we elect Republicans who are working for the 1% who are wealthy, we are casting our vote on the good will of the wealthy. But if we elect Democrats, then we are casting our vote for people who will pass laws to our best interest.
23 months ago: Yeah, yeah. I can also post my opinion without facts and links to back it up. Where are your numbers coming from? Please provide us with the non-partisan links. Remember. I said non-partisan links...
23 months ago: Terryeo,

You said... "But if we elect Democrats, then we are casting our vote for people who will pass laws to our best interest" ...so how is that working out for you?

You elected Obama, has he kept his promises? Even when Democrats get what they want, they blame their failings on the Republicans. Now I think both sides play different "tunes" but they are paid by the same Bandmaster... can you guess who that is?
23 months ago: I trying my best to figure out how the Leftist made Reagan a God?

"I don't often dwell in religious matters" turns into an attack on conservative politics?

Seems that you do dwell on your religious matters as long as they are democrat, liberal and leftist in political leaning.

23 months ago: Religion is the only way that I can explain the faith based reasoning of the conservatives, that ignores facts and the real world.

They believe that the people sent them to Congress to resist tax increases, but between 81% and 67% (depending on which of many polls you believe) say that taxes should be increased on the rich.

They believe that we have a spending problem instead of a revenue problem, but Top tax rates on the rich went from 90% down to an effective 17%, and 2/3rds of corporations pay no taxes at all. Taxes are at a 60 year low and low compared to other countries.

At the same time our infrastructure is crumbling, schools are closing, police and firemen are being laid off and prisoners are being released.

The only place where there is too much spending is the military which has doubled since 2001, yet with the debt crisis and the ending of our two wars, Republicans increased military spending 17%. They declared military spending off the table even though 2/3rds of the public think military spending should be slashed.

Republicans believe with a religious fervor that if they only throw more money at the rich (their budget plan gives them another trillion) that suddenly they will start hiring people, but the rich and the corporations are already sitting on huge piles of cash so additional tax cuts won't have any effect and it hasn't worked for the last 12 years.

Terry is right that the Republicans only serve the 2% with the most money and the corporations that own them.

The only reason the Tea Party and the other Non Rich support the Republicans, is because of the huge propaganda machine (Fox and Hate Radio) that has brainwashed them. The Republicans are all ditto heads.
23 months ago: Please Al. You start with religion and turn it into a onesided political view. Now you state that the cause of the Tea Party is Fox News and Rush Limbaugh? You really need to get out more. Most of us working stiffs don't have time to watch TV or listen to radio because we are too busy carrying your dead weight.
23 months ago: Al,

IF you think that conservatives are faith based... what is Obama with that SELLOUT ...I mean Trillion Dollar Bailout ... that isn't just faith that it will work... that is just stupidity! Isn't Obama a liberal?

23 months ago: So tell us Cypress if it isn't the right wing propaganda machine that has turned your head to mush, what is it that causes an otherwise rational person to support a political party that only benefits those with lots of money, or do you fall in that category?
23 months ago: Do I fall into that category? Very far from it. Some how I get the impression that you are only looking at what benifits you. I'm looking at what will benifit the entire country. It surely isn't giving more handouts to people that already don't contribute. I "turned" a long time ago. Vietnam Era. Started voting Republican when I had long hair. Was I a trend setter?
23 months ago: Al,

One can always tell those who are in need of Government assistance...
they keep begging for it. Maybe you should:

1) vote for Conservatives
2) then pray they act like their own generous Jesus
3) and vote to fund faithful Churches that really help, instead of Abortion clinics

23 months ago: So you voted for the folks that doubled the National Debt and crashed the entire economy and want to do it again just so millionaires can keep their tax deductions for their yachts.

You are willing to see the entire nation fall into default for the first time which would mean an instant classification of the country as a bad credit risk, an instant recession, the increase in interest rates that will mean an increase in the deficit of hundreds of billions, and the increase in home loan and credit rates, the increase of the prices of everything and rampant inflation. Just so the oil companies who have record profits can keep their corporate welfare.

You are willing to stop the paychecks to our troops, to old folks on social security, the payment of loans to students and throwing the US and the rest of the world into a major depression just so the Tea Party Radicals can keep their pledge to Grover Norquist.

Perfectly rational!
23 months ago: Albert? Who are you talking to? Unlike you we will address those we are speaking to by name. Would you be talking to me? Be sure before you get your head handed to you.
23 months ago: I have this one TCG,

Al, did I miss something? Who cares about people suffering if they are just animals anyway... your own "prophets" called them "useless eaters" ...and should all just kill themselves or be euthanize... if they are not productive... just abort them! Isn't that the Atheist way... no conscience or morals? Don't as Conservative Christians to be "Christian" when it suits you and your needy... and then stab them in the back with your two-face rhetoric. Keep that State separate from the Church now...

23 months ago: So TCG I am sorry if I am making life miserable for you. I am still waiting for you to explain how the policies of the Republicans which only benefit the rich and the corporations are best for the other 95% of the country. Altruists never think only of themselves, we always think of what is best for others.

The unnecessary artificial crisis the Republicans caused is going to hurt the entire nation, and the only reason they did that is to hold America hostage to their radical ideology of ending any social programs which help the poor and the preservation of the wasteful tax cuts to the rich that is causing most of the deficit. These are terrorist tactics and these economic terrorists may harm the nation as much as Al Queda did.

I am still waiting to hear any conservative explain to me their plan to get the inner city youth with unemployment rates of up to 70% working again? We progressives think a program like the WPA or an expansion of Job corps is the best way to educate and give job skills and experience to these kids which the free market considers non productive and worthy only of prison.

TB You apparently missed a lot. Progressives care for all people and also other living things. It is the conservatives that throw away any they deem to be unproductive. It is the conservatives who start unnecessary wars and don't even consider the lives of the Iraqis to be worth noticing. We have far more morals and consciences than the conservatives who are willing to gamble about the destruction of the entire environment which will sacrifice the lives of millions of people and the extinction of thousands of species for greed. They are all to be sacrificed on the alter of Reaganism.

23 months ago: Albert. Don't think for a minute your making me miserable. Your not. Although I do have to question why your not voting Republican since you seem to be another Vietnam Era person. Is it because you got a get out of the draft school card (deferment)? Did I see a picture of you in Chicago? You seem to like to protest too much while I seem to point it back to you. Ever thought about that?

I learned during your '60s how to be hated for being a conservative by folks like you. No skin off my nose.

23 months ago: I just don't understand any of this talk. Add it up, zero plus zero and you get zero for the people whichever way you look at it. Tea Party people are born out of little knowledge and experience. They have no conscience. Name one who makes sense. We vote politicians in to help us, not harm us. The people won't take it sitting down for very long. God help those few tyrants when it happens. Sure, they feel smug right now because they think they got us, but they don't. Reagan was just a man and what about his Secretary of Defense. Pulled a lot of things off. Bank America is rumored to be giving away homes in Chicago trying to avoid devastation. Why don't they give it back to the original home owners. Doesn't make sense. Getting deeper into this craziness.

23 months ago: TCG you are not answering many of my questions but you are divulging more about yourself. Was it in Nam that you became such an enemy of communism/ socialism? Friends and comrades lost?

It could have gone the other way too you know. Being sent to an unjust war. 58,000 Americans killed 300,000 wounded and millions of Vietnamese dead.

Ever ask yourself why? Was it worth it? Did you ever read the Pentagon Papers? Did you ever read that the reason we got involved there was to prevent the will of the people.

In 1954 there was supposed to be free and open elections to reunite the North and the South. The CIA found out that 85% of the Vietnamese would have voted for their revolutionary hero Ho Chi Minh so we spent the next 20 years and wasted all of those lives to thwart the will of the people. ANd in the end we were unsuccessful. It was all a wasted effort.

If we had recognized Ho and the new nation and helped them when they asked, they would never have turned to the communists for help.

That is where the Conservatives are weak. They only look at the short term. At that time it was the virulent anti communism of McCarthyism that blinded them to the long term consequences of not considering the will of the people.

Now conservatives have marshaled that same blind hatred, and are manipulating the majority for the benefit of the few.

There will be long term consequences that you will not like.
