The Real Reason Unemployment is High

We all read the headlines and see the news, there are over 14 million Americans still seeking jobs. Most economists have said that it is going to take employers to start adding hundreds of thousands of jobs their payrolls each and every month to begin reducing the unemployment numbers. Unfortunately, that number that employers are actually hiring is very small.

This past June we only added 18,000 jobs in this stagnant economy and the outlook doesn't seem to be much better. The July jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics comes out this Friday and there isn't a lot of optimism.

What is interesting is that many big companies are reporting to their stockholders that business is improving. However, that is not translating into new jobs at these companies. Surveys have indicated that many of these large businesses expect to increase sales in the next 6 months. But only about half of them will be adding any jobs during that growth.

Here are the reasons why unemployment will continue to be high:

1.Businesses are not going to hire because they don't have to. Big business found out that they could do more with fewer personnel. Worker productivity is at an all-time high and many workers are glad to do it just to keep their jobs.

2.Many companies aren't willing to be the first to add jobs. They are sitting back and waiting on their competition to add jobs first.

3.Unfortunately most companies that have added jobs are doing so overseas and not here.

4.Many companies are seeing the business grow overseas with more projects. A recession here means less business.

5.Some companies just don't want to take on the added taxes or health care expenses of new employees, especially with health care reform starting up.

6.We as consumers who are not buying big ticket items such as cars are causing unemployment.

7.And the last reason is that many businesses had a hard time laying off employees the last time and don't want to go through that nightmare again.

So there you have it, the reasons why many of our fellow Americans are stuck sitting at home not working. Is anything going to change in the near future? Only the crystal ball knows for sure; however, I wouldn't bet my job on it.

Companies are refusing to hire anyone that isn't currently working because they are afraid that the job skills have disappeared among the unemployed.

The 50% unemployment among black inner city youth is a problem that the free market system will not address. These people and many of the 99r's are chronically unemployed and unemployable. Businesses refuse to hire people with education and job skills that are deficient.

So there are many reasons the private sector is not hiring and will not hire so what can be done?

Unfortunately the only answer is the government has to step in if private businesses will not. We need an expanded Job Corps or another WPA to get the chronically unemployed working and going back to school.

While the private businesses are hording their profits our infrastructure is crumbling. There is a lot of things that should be done but no money to do it with.

The only answer is to take some of that money the rich and the corporations are hording and put it to use. Get them to pay their fair share and use that to hire people to fix our broken country.

We need to stop throwing money at the rich and the corporations and instead give specific tax breaks only if they create jobs.

We can increase the number of jobs created by changing the rules for the banks. Now it is more profitable for them to gamble their (our) money on derivatives and the risky types of hedge funds and speculation that caused the economic meltdown. Bush's TARP program threw money at the banks with no strings attached in hopes that they would do their real job and lend money to the housing industry and small businesses, especially new start ups that create most of the jobs.

Right now banks are like a black hole sucking money out of the economy. We need to change it so the banks pump money into the economy instead. http://finance.fortune.cnn.com/2011/04/1...

TCG do you have any constructive ideas on how to create jobs, except for throwing more money at the rich and corporations?

9 months ago: Tell us who is the top corporation that holds the largest deposits (dollars) whil getting Obama grants and not paying a cent in taxes. Hint. It is the only company that was listed on the NY Stock Exchange during the first deperssion....

Need a hint??? Green Jobs??? Building plants overseas??? Employing more non-Americans to fill American government orders. Listed on your top richest 29 companies list.

Thomas Edison?

Who is that big bad Oil Company?
9 months ago: Yes Al. I could "create" half a million jobs in 6 months... 2 million jobs in 2 years... 5 million jobs in 5 years... and save citizens money to boot....

No?

9 months ago: Maybe it would have been better to ask me how. But then again, your ilk would never go for it even if it created new jobs and cut the cost of living. You do have an aggenda after all. Too late. I'll save it until Obama goes down in flames...which won't take too long at his current rate of acceleration.

But two thirds of the companies in the US are in the same boat and not paying any taxes. They should all be paying their fair share. In 1950 corporations paid 28% of all revenue generated. Now corporations only pay about 5% of the nation's revenue. This is the result of about 30 years of Republicans shifting the tax burdens away from the rich and corporations on to the middle class.

That doesn't have anything to do with how You would solve the unemployment problem. Please pray tell how would you create half a million jobs in 6 months.
