Protesting the end of Democracy

The Right Wing was out in the streets for the last couple of years protesting the imaginary loss of unspecified and nebulous freedoms.

But as soon as the Republicans got into power they immediately began to take away American's REAL RIGHTS.

There is the attack of women's rights making it impossible to get an abortion in half the country.

They striped the rights of workers to have any say in their working conditions by eliminating collective bargaining rights.

They attempted to strip citizenship from millions of children born in the country if their parents were undocumented.

There is an unprecedented attack on the voting rights of Americans with harsh new voter ID laws even though there has been essentially NO voter fraud.

The list goes on and on. Any time constitutional rights intrude on their extreme ideology, the Republicans are willing to throw the Constitution under the bus.

One of the most blatant abuses of the Constitution is now taking place in Michigan where Republican legislators and a Republican governor have signed legislation that allows State-appointed Emergency Financial Managers (EFMs) historically broad and sweeping powers.

This law allows an appointed official to strip any and all power from any locally elected or appointed governments, commissions , boards or any other representatives.

In effect it allows one person to declare martial law and overrule the will of the people. Now they have exercised this power.

What was the Emergency? Benton Harbor has had a much beloved park that was donated to the community with the intention of it's being enjoyed by the communities youth forever. Big corporate developers want to turn this park into a gulf course.

Joseph L. Harris had a big stake in this golf course and also had a big stake in designing the new law and he was able to get himself appointed the Emergency Financial Manager.

Joseph L. Harris was upset that the local residents in Benton Harbor didn't share his vision of a golf course so he essentially dissolved their government, leaving them with no say in the matter. http://networkedblogs.com/gI5P5

Republicans have little use for Democracy and if unfettered corporate power means disenfranchising all Americans of their rights, so be it.

They began their attack on our Democracy with the notion that corporations are people with the right to bribe officials and spread propaganda protected as a first amendment right. The Citizens United Case allowed these corporations to spend unlimited amounts of money without disclosure to influence elections. The attempts to kill all unions, is an attempt to eliminate the right of Democrats to raise funds to compete with the corporations.

The Corporate interests have taken over in Michigan. Will Wisconsin be next? http://www.care2.com/causes/politics/blo...

Now in Blanton Harbor we see what the future of America will be if Republicans have their way. Americans will have no rights and no say in the government. If they have their say there will no longer be a constitution and elected officials. The Corporations will just tell you what is best for you, and who is to live and who is to die.
UPDATE - 13 months ago
"Rachel Maddow had a segment on her show last evening looking at the controversy over the Emergency Manager in Benton Harbor nullifying election results and forbidding elected bodies in that city from taking any actions whatsoever. She specifically cited the Michigan Messenger."

"Maddow specifically mentioned the Jean Klock Park situation, a story that the Messenger has been following closely for years — and most of the media in the state have been ignoring. A large chunk of that park, deeded to the city on the condition that it remain a public park forever, was leased to private developers to be made into a golf course."

"The land was swapped for land owned by Whirlpool, property that turned out to be highly contaminated; taxpayers are now paying for the cleanup of that land through a Brownfield redevelopment credit worth millions of dollars." Quote from the Michigan Messenger

Note this is the you tube video I had intended to have on the post. Why can't we actually edit the rants and change anything but the picture?

There is an attack that says we will not pay for it. Big difference.

You want to eat that Big Mac? Fine. You pay for it.

She's too scared to tell her parents, would you pay for a local agency she could go to for counseling and support? Would you pay for her to get help in taiking to her parents? Would you pay for her abortion if she were gang raped by the drunken mathlete left wing radicals in her high school? Would you pay for her medical bills to get her proper neo-natal care to bring the baby to term and help find good parents to adopt.

If all Planned Parenthood was was an abortion clinic, you might find more people on your side.
13 months ago: What ? Really ? You support a program that is funded by the government (our tax dollars) that allows children to make medical choices without parental consent ? Yes / No ? That is what your saying.

This is where it gets kind of hopeless for a new born human being to survive. I don't know what this society is going to come to. There has to be another answer.

13 months ago: I'm not for abortion. I hate the idea of any child's life being taken. Life is a sacred thing.
What happens to these children that woman have and are unwanted and uncared for. The harsh reality of people having children that abuse them because they are not wanted is horrific. There has to be some way to provide for these children, otherwise, we can become a hardened Nation like others in the World where the children are open to any abuse, including sale. It isn't an innocent thing of just not funding a program and saving money. What are they saving the money for, their own pockets. The economy is so bad at this point that parents don't have the capability to raise children even if they are wanted, and then one can only imagine the new issues that will arise from this. If Government isn't willing to help the kids that are out there going hungry, what do they really care if they live or die. It is going to cost the Government any way you look at it. Just think of the new crime that will come from this. Every time there is a lack of concern for people, a little more of rights will be sacrificed until we are back living in the dark ages. They have to find another way.

Not only was this nation founded by people fleeing wrong-headed taxation policies, religious persecution, and war criminals (in the eyes of the British), they were all immigrants to this land. Not a one was 'documented', thankfully they were not weeded nor were their children..

Time to stop the xenophobia and the hatred toward immigrants. Unless your parents and both lines of theirs were all indigenous, you don't have a leg to stand on. Time, instead, to have expectations for all citizens. Learn the local language. Participate in the local government. Pay the local taxes. Come here or don't, but don't come here to work and send all your money away making only the owners of Western Union rich. Choose to become a citizen or get out. My mother is 2nd generation, her father was born of immigrants in NYC. They wouldn't let him learn a word of their native tongue. They abandoned all of their traditions and became Americans. The problem is not with immigrants its with society that either doesn't welcome immigrants or doesn't encourage melting into the pot rather than thinking you can just float on the surface and never mix in.
13 months ago: Since you brought up Ellis Island. That was a process. I ask you what to do with those that refuse to enter by process?

13 months ago: My parents were second generation in this Country. They were completely Americanized and never taught me the Native tongue, also. I actually never understood that until you said it. I can say that I was raised to see America as a melting pot. To me growing up, no one was any different than the next person. I can actually say, I may have felt that way, but it didn't mean that others felt that way towards me.
Trouble comes from that too. My beliefs, although well founded, are not looked upon as anything special. I can be hated just like the next person by other cultures. Many immigrants can see us all just one way and don't really get into wanting to get along with other Americans. Either religious differences keep us apart or language barriers, or just the way we have been given a bad image. Poor neighborhoods have another way of thinking. They categorize people if you are an American that we are different with more chances in life; therefore, your neighbors can hate you if you live in a multi cultural neighborhood. It goes both ways. You see it on jobs the barriers that are put up because if you are outnumbered on a job by being who you are all American, you are alone to suffer the consequences, and it can prove brutal. It is a vicious circle. Then again you are dealing with crime coming into the Country. We have laws that have to be respected which aren't by immigrants. Those that are here living and working and doing their share, don't deserve to be separated or criticized. There is a lot of predjudice everywhere, and it isn't going away. This conflict with the Government isn't making anything any better. Is there any real answer?

13 months ago: Government hasn't paid for ANY abortions for quite a while. There are many on the right who are simply using terrorist tactics to murder and terrorize doctors willing to help women who's lives are endangered or diminished by pregnancy. The Republicans once in power are aiding and abetting this terrorism to prevent women from having any control over their own bodies.

Your second comment is deeply disturbing and repugnant. These are United States Citizens who speak the language go to school, have jobs and are entitled to all of the basic rights that you enjoy. Your blatant Racism is showing and it is pretty ugly.
13 months ago: Sorry but what you call Racisim I call blatant Americanism. Where did I mention a sing race that needed to be weeded out of the garden in this thread? please refresh our limited memory.

13 months ago: "WASHINGTON, D.C., July 13, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In the first known instance of direct federal funding of abortion under the new health care legislation, the Obama Administration will give Pennsylvania $160 million to set up a new "high-risk" insurance program - and has quietly approved a plan submitted by an appointee of Governor Edward Rendell (D) under which the new program will cover any abortion that is legal in Pennsylvania.

The high-risk pool program, which will be funded entirely by the federal government, is one of the new programs created by the sweeping health care legislation President Obama signed into law on March 23. The law authorizes $5 billion in federal funds for the program, which will cover as many as 400,000 people when it is implemented nationwide."

13 months ago: Factcheck.org says Altruist is wrong on the abortion thing. Even though the government is not paying the abortion doctors directly, the government is subsidizing insurance plans that will cover such "procedures". So, indirectly at the very least, the government is paying for abortions.

13 months ago: I just want to know, are you for decriminalizing the 420 plant?
13 months ago: Oh yeah. I would really like some liberal clarification on this little tidbit...

"The Unborn Victims of Violence Act of 2004 (Public Law 108-212) is a United States law which recognizes a "child in utero" as a legal victim, if he or she is injured or killed during the commission of any of over 60 listed federal crimes of violence. The law defines "child in utero" as "a member of the species Homo sapiens, at any stage of development, who is carried in the womb"."

Can we say double standard with a double dose of talking out of both sides of your mouth?

13 months ago: The sad thing is that by trying to eliminate planned parenthood they would be causing many more abortions because they would eliminate any alternatives and many more women would have unwanted pregnancies. That is why abortions always go down with Democrats in power. They realize that abortions should be rare, safe and not just another birth control device.

The main difference between Dems and Repubs is that the Democrats care for the child after they are born and the republicans care for the collection of cells called a zygote more than they care for the life of the mother.

13 months ago: The arguments missed the central point of the rant.

Americans fought a revolutionary war and brought about our independence from the rule of a tyrant. The intent of the formation of this country was to allow the people to have a say in their lives.

Now in Benton Harbor one tyrant has taken away those constitutional rights. By eliminating collective bargaining they have taken away the right of workers to have a say in their unsafe working conditions. The tyrants are restricting the right of people to vote. They have taken away our voices because only money talks and the corporate interests have a monopoly on that. They are shifting the tax burdens further onto the middle class while allowing the obscenely rich oligarchs to pay less and less. That is taxation without representation, and now that they are in power, they are gerrymandering voting districts to enshrine the tyrants forever.

While the people are rising up against the tyrants in Africa and the Middle East, in this country the tyrants are enslaving the people and half of the people are helping the slave owners forge their own shackles.

We aren't chained by some government rule limiting our productivity or some union hack who tells us we can't overachieve.
13 months ago: Some of us get up 3 to 4 hours before the crack of dawn to do just that.

I have to wonder how I can do more work before most people get out bed than they do all day.

Are those workers shackled to the grindstone and forced to work in conditions they feel are unsafe? Can they leave and work elsewhere?
13 months ago: Albert. You ask the wrong question. "The Corporate interests have taken over in Michigan. Will Wisconsin be next?"

The question should hav been. When will California and New York revolt?
