The Nature of Sacrifice

The nation mourns the loss of another 30 of our heroes as they were responding to a call for help from some of their special forces brethren. These people are the best of the best. They are a national treasure. But they were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to help their compatriots and their nation.

My parents sacrificed during World War II. While my father fought, my mother worked in the factories, and my grandfather went up and down the streets collecting scrap for the war effort. Everyone shared in the sacrifice, doing without many of the basics of life while growing victory gardens. Even the rich sacrificed, supporting the war effort financially by giving up 91% of their income.

The rich paid 90% tax rates during the Korean War and during the long Vietnam War, while the half a million casualties were spread among the families of all Americans. Because of the draft and because of our tax policies, everyone shared in the sacrifice.

When we were attacked on 9/11 everyone was willing to sacrifice. We all would have been willing to give up our way of life and pay more in taxes at that time, for the good of the nation, but we were not asked to sacrifice. We were told to go shopping.

Now we have a volunteer military. Most people join the military for economic reasons. These kids can't get jobs, or education, or training, so they turn to the military. Now it is mostly the poor from rural areas that make the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.

In past wars, our soldiers would be asked to endure one or two tours of duty, to discharge their debt to society. Some of these heroes that just died, were on their tenth tour of duty. They and their families are sacrificing more than previous generations. What are the rest of us sacrificing?

One of the wars we are still fighting, was an unnecessary war of choice. It had nothing to do with terrorism or 9/11. It was about oil. Were we asked to sacrifice our addiction to oil? Were we asked to curtail our driving? No we were urged to drive bigger and even more wasteful SUV's.

While people in previous wars were asked to sacrifice by paying for those wars with higher taxes, we received tax breaks, and the wars and the tax breaks were both put on the credit card.

The rich were not asked to pay 90% as in previous wars, the rich received the majority of the tax cuts so today they only pay 17% of their income.

Borrowing all of that money to pay for doubling of the military and the huge tax cuts, have now caused an economic crisis in the nation, that is perhaps more harmful than anything that Al Queda has done. Now just as only the poor are being asked to shed their blood for the country, only the poor, the infirm and the aged are being asked to sacrifice to solve our economic crisis. Those who control 90% of the wealth in the country, those most able to solve the crisis, are being showered with even more tax cuts, so they can live in even greater luxury.

Tax rates haven't been this low since 1950, and income inequality has never been this bad before. The rich have gotten far far richer and the poor have gotten poorer. Because the rich refuse to pay their fair share, our nation, which was once the greatest nation in the world, is declining and can no longer compete in the world.

It is shameful for the rich to shirk their patriotic duty, to sacrifice to repay the nation that allowed them to prosper. They owe a debt to their nation, but they are refusing and instead wallow in greed and opulence while the rest of the nation suffers.

It is unpatriotic for the rich to shirk their financial duty, to share in the sacrifice and to help their nation when it is most in need, and they are the only ones that can help the nation now, because the poor and the middle class have already sacrificed all they can.

It is time for the rich and the corporations, who are making record profits, to sacrifice to save the nation in its direst time of need. It is the patriotic duty of the rich to pay their fair share.

It is our patriotic duty to vote out any politician that has made a pledge not to pay for the wars they voted for. It is our patriotic duty to throw out those who have been bribed by the greedy rich and the corporations, to protect their opulent lifestyles while the rest of the nation suffers.

It is our duty to throw out any unpatriotic politician that refuses to renounce their pledge not to pay for the wars they demanded.

1. You dishonestly saying our debt is because of the military (only 4% of GNP presently, when it used to be much, much more)

2. And you liberal war protestors not protesting the war anymore...until we have a republican President.

Both make me vomit Al.

What makes me sick is that the Republicans created most of the debt by spending twice as much as Obama is, but they refuse to pay for their borrowing. This shows that Republican presidents added 61.4% of the GDP of debt while Clinton saved about the same amount Obama spent (9%). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_de...

Both Bush and Obama responded to the recession with emergency spending: TARP, bailouts, and stimulus (Bush's TARP $700B, Obama's Stimulus $700B) . Take those recession responses out of the equation, and you find new Bush policies racking up $509 billion in deficits per year in his administration. Obama's yearly non-stimulus deficit clip: $215 billion.

This breaks down where the costs came from for Bush's new policies and for Obama's new policies. http://madvilletimes.com/2011/07/yes-we-...
9 months ago: Respecting TARP, Bush sucked also.

History will reflect Bush will regret it.

History will reflect Obama is tickled to death, because he is deliberately trying to destroy our capitalistic society.

Absolute EVIL.

Besides what would be the point? When I was protesting the wars it was to enlighten people about the injustice. We were a minority educating the majority. Now the vast majority is aware of the injustice of the wars and Libya brought the vast majority of people in both parties to oppose the wars. http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/arch...

9 months ago: You to Pefect.

THE POOR DON'T PAY TAXES WHATSOEVER.

That's a dang lie and you know it.

48% of Americans PAY NO TAXES.

You obviously are much, much more than a drone.

By poor I should have said "less rich"... apologies for any confusion.

A lot of the people (not all of them) who don't pay income taxes live below the poverty line, I don't think they should have to pay...of course I don't think anyone should have to pay an illegal tax...but that's just me.
9 months ago: I must ask the writer how they can Salute and Commend the current troops while looking back they seem to have posted their disapproval of the actions prior to Obama taking office. That would be only when the actions were under a Republican Commander in Chief. What has changed their objectivity in the last 2 and 1/2 years? Or is it now a justified engagement only because their paycheck president tells them so?

I just happen to think that our troops would be better off at home with their families than in harms way. If we are going to ask for the blood of our troops and the treasure of the nation we should be very clear in our goals. Going after Osama after he attacked us was OK but only with international support. Going after Iraq's oil, when Saddam did not attack us, did not have any WOMD, was no threat to us or it's neighbors, and when the invasion was condemned as illegal by the UN was not OK.

But we still support the troops who have to follow their leaders despite the unjustness of the war.

Red I think you suffer from a common misconception. !/2 of the people in the country don't pay any INCOME Tax because of Obama's tax cuts, but most people pay more in payroll taxes than income taxes, and then there are local and state taxes.

Perfect I don't agree that the income tax is illegal. The Sixteenth Amendment, making the income tax constitutional, was ratified in 1913. The Constitution, Article 1, Sections 7 through 9, and the Sixteenth Amendment give the Federal Government the right to levy and collect taxes. The Sixteenth Amendment authorized a tax on income, regardless of source, without apportionment. The courts have rejected claims that the Sixteenth Amendment was not properly ratified. The Amendment was ratified by 38 states altogether, and ratification was necessary by only 36. The U.S. Supreme Court has recognized the validity of the Sixteenth Amendment. Brushaber v. Union Pacific Railroad Co., 240 U.S. 1, 18-20 (1916); Bob Jones University v. United States, 461 U.S. 574, 615 (1983).

The Fair Tax is not really fair because it would cut the taxes by the millionaires in half or more. That is why most Republicans support a flat tax , because any non progressive tax would shift the burden of taxes further onto the middle class and poor and off the rich who are already making too much.

Our Tax code is the only thing we have to reduce the rampant income inequality. The Clinton tax policies that balanced the budget and provided surpluses should be restored. But in addition if we are to pay off the debt that the Republicans have built up over the years we also need to add another tax bracket for those who make more than a million dollars and we need to start taxing wall street speculation that caused the economic meltdown.

If we had really fair tax reform, we could reduce Income tax rates if we had a universal transaction tax of .2% and also taxed carbon to slow global warming, and had other sin and green taxes that taxed any behavior that harmed the nation or the environment.

If the rich and corporations paid their fair share, then we might have a chance to restore the American Dream http://www.commondreams.org/headline/201...
