The Duty of Government

Politics is a source of entertainment, heated debate where no one is every fully satisfied. What should a government be, what should it do? What is the duty of government.

This idea that a government has a basic thing it should be doing is easily overlooked in the heat of the moment. The economy is going to hell with afterburners in full flame. A hundred special interests with thousands of dollars to spend woes congressmen with free lunches, travel and vacations, thinly disguised as "consultation", "guest speaker" and carry associated payoffs.

What is the duty of government?

A government's duty is to organize people and resources for the best survival of its people. Best survival not only meant a chicken in every pot, but equal opportunity for all to build a better tomorrow, for tomorrow's better life.

How can a government do this task? It does, by creating order. It makes law so that national communication and transportation can be built. So electrical power and water systems can be built to good standards. And so that health care is available, too.

A government's product is order and opportunity, brought into being by law. And there are three law actions. From slow to immediate they are judicial, legislative and executive. The executive (call him president, king or shah), being a single individual, can act rapidly and without agreement. In the USA he can deploy the military and other resources in rapid action.

The legislative law action is slower. It passes law that result in better or poorer distribution of people and resources.

And the judicial action of law is slowest of all, laws are changed by people bringing lawsuit to change laws, when people see an unjust application of law.

The radical activist Supreme Court destroyed Justice by declaring corporations people, and with the Citizen's United Case. The Fox news and hate radio propaganda machine intentionally destroyed domestic tranquility by constantly keeping people in a constant state of fear and hate. The republicans refused to pay for the common defense, and now are trying to eliminate anything to do with General Welfare, and Bush's Patriot Act did a number on our liberty and his accumulated debt and economic meltdown did away with our prosperity.

Fox news is not the only source of fear and hate. The left wing media has given us black mold, swine flu, bird flu, massive hurricanes, volcanoes, asteroids and the list goes on and on and on.
Republicans refused to pay for the common defense? Has anyone paid for anything in the last 16 years? The Democrats have controlled the purse strings for far more years than the Republicans.

General Welfare is not the same as personal welfare.

The Patriot Act is still alive and kicking, years after Bush packed up and went home. Why do you think we will always have a war going from now on? Now we have an extra war that Bush and the Republicans had nothing to do with. That one is Obama and the Democrats' baby.

Economists tried to warn of the impending financial disaster, but Democrats said there was nothing to worry about. Just because it happened on Bush's watch does mean he is responsible. Isn't that what every Democrat says when bad things happen on Obama's watch? His hands were tied, and it wasn't his fault.

I would say the worst hate mongering is perpetrated by staunch party-liner mouthpieces who use every opportunity to vilify their political opponents. It reminds me of the guy who said "I will damn my enemies, and I will damn anyone who doesn't sit by candlelight damning them also."
9 months ago: on the news over here they are really trying to promote obama.
some of the tv stations are saying they think he is gonna have a tough time getting in again.
is it true?
surely you can trust the president to do what he says he will.
over here the politicians say one thing before the election and then do something totally different after then they wonder why people riot.
9 months ago: The second revolution has begun. We are looking at all of those folks.
All I can say is enjoy the ride. Come November 2012 we will know if the entire world will be freemen or slaves.

Trust the President? Normally, yes. Over here they have been doing the same for decades and we are getting to the boiling point.

Problem is for them over here. We have guns.

OOTB the original tea party was as much of a protest against the power of corporations (The East India Company) as against the crown. For this reason there were a lot of restrictions against corporations. They were only to support the community. Our democracy has been stolen with legalized bribery and elections that have been bought.

Mate It doesn't matter what a politician says on the campaign. Michelle Bachman has said she will bring the price of gasloline down to $2.00 a gallon. She doesn't realize that the only way to do that is with socialist nationalization of the industry.

The problem with political promises even if they are sincere, is that the politician has to deal with a political system which is dysfunctional. The Congress has allowed numerous impediments to governing. One senator can block all legislation and block all political appointees. The Republicans have taken the filibuster, which is not mentioned in the constitution and which used to be only used around once a year for grave conditions. Now 80% of all legislation is filibustered and additional procedural rules are used to block appointees and slow down everything so few things can get done in the Senate (like a budget) without a 2/3rds vote.

So even if a president wants to do something Congress has to pass a bill and the House has to pay for it.

No Republican has voted to raise taxes to pay for anything major since 1994, but they have voted for hundreds of billions in new government programs and for doubling the military. This accounts for the current National Debt problems.

They like to spend (twice as much as Democrats) but never pay for what they buy. When Bush was in they denigrated the Democrats for wanting to balance the budget and were quite open about shifting the tax burden from the rich onto the middle class and for saying that deficits didn't matter thus building up the National Debt. http://www.slate.com/id/2075796/

Now they are blaming the Democrats for the Republican fiscal insanity.

The Boston Tea Party was in protest of one corporation being allowed tax exempt status by the British crown while taxing the colonial merchants for the same products.

9 months ago: Ayup. And not only did the East India Company get favored status and preferential treatment, they were allowed an army of their own goons to maintain order in the areas they serviced. A bit like the labor unions here today.
9 months ago: Hold on just a second. Your saying the the Government can ban the "G.E. incandescent light bulb" and give them a waiver on taxes to boot? How does that math work? Is there a "Quid Pro Quo" for G.E.?
9 months ago: I agree that USA government is dysfunctional. A functioning government would be moving toward making things right. Our government isn't. Therefore, dysfunctional.

I could be mistaken, but I think our judicial system, far from perfect, works. Generally works. And our first branch of government, the Executive branch has always been a source of discussion. It is the most visible part of government, it being the job of the president to meet with other country's leaders, make agreements and at as ambassador. If we closely examine almost any act of the Presidential office in the last 10 years, there are those opposed and those who supported. The Executive Branch might be wrong, but as long as it isn't secreted, it isn't dysfunctional.

It is the Legislative Branch that is most dysfunctional. This Branch is the most difficult of all three to change.
