The Deal IS Made Will We Be Saved?

A "protection racket" is where a group of people puts you at risk of disaster — and then generously offers to sell you protection against that very risk, usually at a very high price.

Well the Blackmailers have done it again. They have gotten Obama to give them 98% of what they want. No revenue increases, and draconian cuts to almost every program. Our infrastructure will continue to crumble, our schools will continue to fall behind other nations, our police and firemen will not be able to respond, the prisoners will be released, We will not be able to compete for all of the green jobs because we won't be able to afford research. We will no longer be the innovators we will be dependent for our clean energy from China, just as we have been dependent on oil from Saudi Arabia. All of this will slow down the economy and cost millions of jobs.

What does the regular citizen get out of the deal? They may be able to avoid the even worse disaster of defaulting on the debt that the Republicans caused in the first place. Default would have meant higher interest rates for everyone, and it would have increased the national debt by hundreds of billions.

The problem is even if the Republicans get their way, and win the next election they will have boxed themselves in. Having promised to never raise taxes they will not be able to balance the budget for 64 years and they add $6 trillion to the debt, because they insist on raising military spending even though the military doesn't want the increases. The Republicans are owned by the military Industrial Complex, and will have to raise the debt ceiling many more times. http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archive...

I say the deal May have saved us from default, but that is still not certain.

The Tea Party is still convinced that default would be a good thing because it would mean that Obama would be considered a failure. Even if Obama has given them more than they ever dreamed of, they still might not vote to extend the debt ceiling.

They think another economic failure would be good for them and their corporate masters. Look at what happened last time they destroyed the economy. The big corporations were able to gobble up their competition, the rich got richer and the poor got poorer. The banks and the other corporations are now making record profits.

If the economy is destroyed again, they will be able to use that disaster to sell off all of the nations assets. They can sell the Grand Canyon for the mineral rights and all of the other parks. They call it Disaster Capitalism. They use disasters to push through their radical agenda while everyone is in shock from the disaster. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shock_D...

In this case they created a totally artificial crisis from what should have been routine book keeping. Then they used that crisis to hold America hostage, threatening to blow the economy up unless they got their way.

Now we have two big questions:

1. Even after they got their way will the terrorists still blew up the economy?

2. If the terrorists sign the deal and collect their ransom, when will they hold us hostage again?
UPDATE - 9 months ago
The House passed a bipartisan measure 269-161 to trim federal deficits and raise the debt ceiling on Monday evening, with Democratic and Republican leaders sewing together a loose, centrist coalition to overcome the objections of the wings of each party

Congratulations to President Obama and the congressional leaders for keeping their children under control.

Now maybe they can work to solve some of the nation's REAL problems.

9 months ago: The feeling of liberals across the country can be summed up as follows:

"This deal weakens the Democratic Party as badly as it weakens the country. We have given much and received nothing in return," said Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva, an Arizona Democrat and co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

How many times is Obama going to be "bullied" into giving the rich exactly what they want, with nothing in return? Wouldn't it be time, right about now, to start thinking about his replacement in the next election? I'm sure the Republicans are thinking seriously about keeping him on.

Of course, the die hard Liberals who supported him in the past will give him the benefit of the doubt, and blame it all on the Republicans. They will firmly ensconce their noses in Obama's derriere and explain how has such good intentions, but can't accomplish anything because of those nasty Republicans. My, what a leader.

9 months ago: We need someone strong like Elizabeth Warren who is not afraid to stand up to big money interests. She is currently without a job. So is Russ Feingold.

For once I agree partially with OOTB. We need someone to challenge Obama on the far left to pull the politicians back to where the majority of people are.

Now the country is being driven by the craziest 1/4th of 1/3rd of the government.

The political process is obviously broken so nothing can get done. We need to end the constant filibustering and delays of the right which makes it impossible to get anything done in the Senate, and we need to eliminate money from the process so the people's voices can once again be heard. Now nothing but big money is heard and only the rich and the big corporations are served.
9 months ago: So does "Obama" not have the power of his Veto? Maybe you should write him a letter asking him to use it. I for one think the "Obama / Reid" deal sucks and would welcome his veto.

Wow, that was an abrupt about face. Like I said, die hard Obama supporters are going to give him a pass on everything he doesn't do, rather than admit they were wrong about him.

9 months ago: But of course, with the balance of power shifting into the hands of an even smaller group in government, I guess this is what the true Liberals wanted all along. So technically, Obama did usher in the Super Committee, which can secretly hammer out all future legislation, and then direct their "children" on how it will voted upon.

9 months ago: I got an e-mail this morning from a Democrat Organization.
It pretty much said that the President surrendered to the Republicans.
He caved. The cuts won't be in military, or taking back tax breaks from the rich.
It will be taken from the people again.
9 months ago: Al.

Based upon these last few years with you, I PROMISE, cross my heart, hope to die, stick a needle in my eye, that you have no ability to and it is against the rules of physics for you to be able to understand what a conservative is thinking.

It's like something ugly running up a hill.

And for crying out loud Al. "Cuts"?!?!

They just increased our debt further than ever before in the history of our country...much the less the world.

You are either a liar (which I choose not to believe) or need to get out in the sun more.

(No name calling here, but I am incredulous.)

9 months ago: Guess who said this:

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. Leadership means that 'the buck stops here.' Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better. I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America's debt limit."

It just gets better and better.
9 months ago: A liar.

President Obama.

9 months ago: But, Box, me too, but what other choices does it come to in this emergency.
They can't figure it out and can't come up with any good plan with the castrophe it will cause if they didn't sign it into law. Possibly, they can amend some of it to make it better. I would like at least for that to happen. I do agree with you, and I don't believe anyone wants a higher debt ceiling. How could it have been avoided? Those big shots don't know.

9 months ago: Catastrophe? The government has shut down (partially) a total of 11 times since 1980; the fiscal year 1996 budget battle included two lengthy shutdowns. Once it was shut down for 21 days. But all they would have to do in this case was to pass a continuing resolution. There was no crisis.

9 months ago: Box....When I use that word, catastrophe, I'm saying how much more can the people handle? Government goes back and forth with their debates, and they know exactly what can be done in the face of impending default. I just believe that the word CUTS frightens everyone, especially the average person struggling each day so they push to get something resolved immediately. People are walking a tight rope without a net. The Government does this to them to force a response to push through what they want. The way this was handled and Obama coming on television to ask the people for support wasn't what he should of done. He needed to take the bull by horns and act like a President.
It is a war of who takes control within their political agenda. They are a bunch of buffoons. The way it is at this moment it is more difficult for the small business man to get loans from the bank to meet their payroll expenses. I can see more jobs going bye bye. This only tells me we are about to be double dipping in this recession.
Every single comment that has been made here has a certain amount of truth which ever way you agree.

9 months ago: I'm sitting here a regular person thinking Obama is not so innocent.
He added to the problems of this economy. I don't think another President would yield so easily. He made a big fuss calling on the people for support, where did it get him? I understand he is the first black President and he may have bit off more then he could chew. It is a shame that this happened to him, but I don't believe he was ready.
Why can't you admit that he has done a lot of wrong. He did go back on his promises. I saw a man that turned his back on the people when they needed help the most. Silence then, and I believe there will be a lot of silence now because of the domino affect it will have on us all. He will let it happen. He is already.

9 months ago: I agree Sunny that Obama has always caved too easily. He is and always been a centrist and not a liberal. The problem is that when negotiating he starts with what he thinks will get Republican votes and then the Republicans don't give an inch so Obama moves even more to the right until they have 98% of what they want.

We need a REAL liberal running for president willing to move the discussion back to where most of the people are.

Red your problem is that you don't understand what the debt ceiling is. It is not a license to spend more. It is all about what has already been spent.

3/4th of the National debt was built up by Republicans who then blackmailed Obama into extending the tax cuts to the rich which caused half of Obama's current deficit.

WHat you don't understand Red is that the official Republican plan (Ryans budget) would also necessitate increasing the debt limit about 20 times. That budget which includes draconian budget cuts and the end of Medicare wouldn't balance the budget for 64 years and for each of those 64 years the national debt would be growing which means that the debt ceiling would continue to be broken.

The ONLY way to stop raising the debt ceiling is to cut the military by 1/2 and raise taxes on the rich and the corporations. Even if we can balance the budget the national debt will still grow because they add the interest to the debt to the proincipal. You have to balance the budget, then pay off the interest on the debt, then have enough revenue left over to start paying off the debt. Until we can do that we HAVE to raise the debt ceiling because it is just paying for stuff we have already bought.

The Republicans under Reagan tripled the National Debt and raised the debt ceiling 18 times. Baby Bush doubled the national debt by starting two wars, doubling the size of the military, giving the drug companies billions with Medicare part B, and then gave trillions to the rich, all without paying for any of it. He just put it on the credit card, and now the Republicans refuse to pay for what they bought.

OK so in the real world they dispossess the stuff you bought if you stop making payments. SO we need to take back all of the stuff Bush bought. We need to take back the doubling of the military by cutting it's budget in half. We have to stop the wars he started. We have to take back the tax cuts he gave to the rich and we have to reinstate the tax policies that Clinton had that allowed him to not only balance the budget but start paying off the national debt.

9 months ago: AL....America is divided with rich and poor, of course, and no in between anymore, and it chooses for us who is getting into office. How can we win any of the small battles that will eventually become something that no one will be able to handle. It was at one time the people's Governement. We need strong Leaders as you said.
I hear how tuition has gone up in Colleges not allowing students to complete their Degree Programs and having to drop out. What happens if the Government keeps pursuing this to cut, cut, and more cuts from education? We have young people with the inability to become Leaders. Looks as if our Government has a motive to destroy our youth. Or they are so blinded that they don't care at this time. One minute Obama is addressing students and the next he isn't supporting what they need for an education. Cuts will make this Country's condition lame and without the strength it needs to be America. Obama regardless of what the Republicans have done, and they have been destructive to his Presidency, he has a mouth, and he can talk by saying the things that will make people strong and supportive. Not wait until he needs their support for raising the debt ceiling. He is a different person from the first guy I saw get up there and speak when he wanted the office of Presidency. He used his charm to get what he wanted. Down it is all downhill. I can't wait to see what he comes up with to win the vote for this next election.

9 months ago: The balanced budget amendment would be OK, IF it didn't restrict the generation of revenue, and IF it allowed for a huge rainy day fund to take into account all of the spending needed for all of the disasters that will come from Global Warming, And if they would raise top tax rates to 90% every time they started a war like they did in the past.

The Democrats and Obama voted against the debt ceiling when Bush was doing all of the deficit spending to protest Cheney saying that deficits didn't matter. It was a protest, but they wouldn't really have blocked the extension. In fact they tried to pass several pay as you go bills, but the Republicans refused to pay for new programs by raising revenue so it didn't work.
