The Case Against 3D Television

As the Summer movie Season looms near with blockbusters applenty on the horizon for all age groups, we are going to have a decision to make. Should I see this movie in 2D or 3D?

Since this 3D craze started really going main stream around December of 2009, I have seen three movies in 3D; A Christmas Carol, Avatar, and Alice in Wonderland. I found the 3D effects in A Christmas Carol to be utterly distracting, unfufilling, and generally not worth the 50 dollars it cost me to take may family of four to see. And that was a matinée'. The same goes for Avatar and Alice in Wonderland.

It was after I purchased Avatar on BlueRay however that I decided it would be highly unlikely that I would ever fork over the extra cash to see another movie in 3D. Why? Because the 2D experience was so much better in my opinion. I wasn't distracted by random things flying out of the screen, and was able to focus on the movie and the incredible cinematography within the movie.

Now TV manufacturers are pushing the TV industry to produce more 3D content so that they can sell their in-home 3D televisions. I have to question any consumers willingness to sit on their couch with a pair of glasses on their face while they watch television. Does anyone really want to do that on a regular basis? Let's face it, most of us can't even keep tabs on where we stuck the remote. Now we have to make sure we no where are "special glasses" are?

Personally I hope this is one fad that never goes mainstream. Hollywood should get back to making great movies with great stories instead of feeding us the same mediocre crap and wrapping it in a nice 3D package just so they can squeeze another four dollars a ticket our of us.

What is next? Seems like 3D is old tech.....

Maybe 4D?
24 months ago: I thought VR was right around the corner...of course that requires even more "gear"...lol
24 months ago: Can on say "Fly by Wire"? You think the Military / NASA does not already have the next wave to hit the market? I'm guessing there will be a generic loop hole that allows the technology to be stolen and reverse engineered so it can be produced in a deserving world leader country... like the Galápagos Islands.

What is new about it today is the method by which our optical nerve is fooled into perceiving the video presented in three dimensions. This ne technology is in its infancy and as such producers are tweaking it in order to see what works best. I'm not surprised that theaters would charge considerably more to show it since it cost more to see it. Will people continue to shell out those extra bucks to see it at the theater in 3d when it is available for the home? I would like to believe that most would not which is why you will continue to see it all over the place, at least until one venue wins out as the most profitable. You notice how some movies are released straight to DVD? I suspect most 3D movies will eventually be like that except when there is a big name producer using that technology. Personally The glasses leave my eyes hurting afterwards so I don't like watching 3D movies because of that!
