If you’re a celebrity, do you still get star struck? Well, if you look at the reactions of the kids at the We Are The World 2010 recording session, the answer is a resounding yes.
Reading the stories about the 2010 We Are The World recording feels like the session was basically a huge networking session. Barbra Streisand, Kanye “Jackass” West, Miley Cyrus, Celine Dion, Tony Bennett, Akon, Patti Austin, Carlos Santana, and some 60-plus more actors, singers, and rappers all participated in the song’s recording.
The 2010 We Are the World track was recorded at the same studio where the original song was created, and Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie were on hand to make sure that it sounded all right.
I don’t know. The whole story makes me a little uncomfortable. Granted, the organizers of the We Are the World 2010 session promised that every dime will go to a “newly established foundation” that’s meant to get ALL the money to Haiti. Celebrity donations have been under the microscope since Wyclef Jean was criticized for taking nearly half of several years worth of donation dollars that were bound for Haiti.
Plus, all the news stories about We Are The World 2010 make sure to have a whole laundry list of celebrity names before they even mention the word “Haiti.” The terms “capitalizing on suffering” and “exploitation” aren’t right, but they come to mind.
The new version of We Are The World 2010 will be unveiled during NBC’s coverage of the Winter Olympics on February 12.
