Does anyone care that the new VW. commercials are wrong with the punching. When I was growing up punching someone in the arm was when we saw a VW bug which coined the term Slugbug. Now they-(vw commercial) think that punch can be used when seeing any VW. It's just wrong! Stop the madness Thanx

20 months ago: You are right! We called out "Punchbug, no punch back!" But you can't blame them, they're not from around here. They probably just don't know any better.
20 months ago: you know i love the punch buggy no punch back. your absolutely right it is not for all vw...just the bugs
20 months ago: It's more fun to differentiate.

For instance -

One punch for the bug. Another if it's an old-school bug. Another if it's convertible.

If you're really into hitting or getting hit, you can call if the bug is moving or parked. Or better yet, Bug-Light (That's when the bug is stopped at a Red-light.

Now that makes it even more fun! No bruises though!

20 months ago: Seems kinda weird to try to revise a game that was played by the current target group's grandparents. Doesn't that make it inherently un-cool?

Few from this generation had a clue as to what the entire commercial was about except that people were beating on each other for no obvious reasons. They should have started out with a commercial explaining the rules and also stressed that you can get into a lot of trouble if you start beating on someone that hasn't agreed to play the game.
19 months ago: I find this entire ad campaign incredibly annoying and it makes VW lose a bunch of points in my book. I love VWs and have owned several. VW corporate can't just redefine a completely organic fan driven game that has been with us for decades because they can't think of a good idea.

Sorry -- you invented the car, but you don't own the game, and these commercials show that you don't even understand a game that 4 year olds get the hang of in 2 seconds. Yes, I know they came up with the 'witty' change in moniker of 'Punch-Dub' so it can supposedly apply to all VWs. Sorry. I'm not buying it and are the fan sites like BeetleMania.

While I'm on this rant, I'd like to state that I don't agree with Altruist's comment above. If I understand you correctly, it sounds like you think little kids today don't know about the slug-bug game. Not true. Kids of all ages are still loving this simple and highly annoying game. Thinking it's a game only of their grandparents is like saying that kids today don't know what 'pull my finger' is all about.

And for the record, as a purist, I don't really like people calling it Punch Bug or Punch Buggy, either, though I have to admit that this is a popular and well accepted name for it. To me, it will always be SLUG-BUG. Come on people -- it RHYMES. That's how it came into existence to begin with. Punch Bug may be the same in definition but it doesn't come close to Slug-Bug.

Man, I never thought people could mess up such a simple game in so many ways.

Seriously, though, VW marketing geniuses. You blew it on this one and you should be ashamed of yourselves. Don't mess with Slug Bug.
And stop coming up with ridiculous, nonsense names for your new vehicles. I was finally starting to overlook Touareg, but now, Tiguan? What's wrong with you? Jetta and Passat have cool factor. I don't know who in America you think a name like Tiguan is appealing to. As 'Out Of The Box' states -- They're obviously not from around here. Maybe VW just really doesn't understand Americans at all. One thing you did do, though -- everytime that stupid commercial comes on, I have a strong urge to punch VW in the face.
