You know what you would never see in a senate race. People erasing any affiliations of themselves to the Christian church.
Sharron Angle, a candidate for the senate in Nevada, has had to remove some interesting key facts about herself due to Scientology references and endorsing psychotropic drugs. She removed a claim that she along with Jenna Elfman and Kelly Preston, approached Sen. John Ensign in order to propagate a piece of legislation that dis-allowed School Employees to require children to use anti-depressants.
The text now simply says that Ensign sponsored a bill at her request.
It was removed due to the fact that her team is worried that affiliations with scientology will hinder her from gaining support because it could be seen as being unable to get support from mainstream sources.
Sue Lowden has been attacking her with information that she sponsored a drug-treatment program in 2003 that used saunas and massages as treatment for inmates.
Jerry Stacy, her spokesman has stated that he feels these recent accusations are out of desperation, and they are untrue. She has never advocated scientology, he stated, "This is all about blowing this thing out of proportion — making it sound like she's a Scientologist.".
How is that for religious intolerance? She associates with people who are scientologists, and end up being accused of being one of them. This would never have happened if they were Christians. It would be normal then. What is the difference here? Why is it that we consider one faith more "normal" than another?
The only logical assertion that can be made is that there is a size factor that presses the balance one way or the other. It is no longer as barbaric as might makes right, but has reduced further to size makes right.
Neither religion has any basis to be criticized, yet Angle felt the need to quote scripture to validate herself and remove any associations of Scientology. Yes we can take the views that certain religious group's share that does not make us one of them. American citizens all share a desire to keep our land and freedom, this is something that al-Qaeda has as well. That does not mean that we agree with all that they think and desire.
But the real message, and the real reason I write this, is that even if she was a scientologist, why would it matter? Is there something that the church actually believes that you don't agree with? Does that belief alter her ability to do what is best for her state? Can you even prove that she shares that belief?
I know some about the church, but I know only a handful of people that know anything about it other than what they here in the papers. There is no way we can accurately judge her based on her religion.
One more reason that religion needs to be ignored. We could have missed the best opportunity for our country simply because the one we should have elected believes in aliens or he believes that Jesus talks to people when they sleep. We could have missed several great opportunities simply because of their seemingly crazy religion.
