The thoughts of a 7 year-old kid:

"At the end of the service, the Pastor calls forward people who want healing, cos Jesus healed the sick when he was on Earth. But the same cripples go forward every week. And I asked my mom: "maybe this isn't working?" I got in big trouble for asking that."

Ok, maybe Peter isn't PC by calling handicaps "cripples". That can be forgiven since he's 7. And he has since then been updated on what not to say. He posed a fair question though.

This is the branch of Christianity Peter has to endure:

"The Pentecostal family of denominations form one branch of conservative Protestantism within Christianity. A major defining feature of Pentecostalism is their belief in Glossolalia -- the ability to speak "in tongues". Another is the unusual freedom and spontaneity exhibited during their religious services. Otherwise, their beliefs and practices are similar to those of other conservative Christians. They strongly oppose abortion access, equality for sexual minorities, and same-sex marriage." source: religioustolerance.org

Why do parents have a free ticket to abuse children's minds like this? Clearly, brainwashing isn't owned by this particular sect alone. Many religions are guilty of this.

Oh, and why we're on the topic of religion: The Catholic Church was in the headlines a few months back with child abuse cases. What's going on with that? I say high time to impeach the Pope. According to articles I've read in the New York Times and Spiegel International, the Pope, formerly known as Cardinal Ratzinger, had direct knowledge of abuse cases in the US, Ireland, Germany and Austria. It's time to pull back the curtains and reveal what lies underneath. Centuries of corruption, deceit, misogyny and lies need to be tackled head on.

And I don't care if I felt sorry for the Pope while I watched about 63 seconds of the Summer Mass........those kids, who were abused and muzzled with threats, deserve retribution. We are in the year 2010. This is like major future space age time. The Catholic Church is still in the 16th century when it ruled supreme. Lets get with it and blast this hoax into the 21st century.

Children need to be educated, not brainwashed. I'm not against family traditions and values, but listen, and listen good, if your kid still has the ability to ask a simple question without fear of being blasted.

Fear everyone's worst enemy. If a religion works with fear, then it's not a religion. It's propaganda.

"I verily believe that the great good which has been effected in the world by Christianity has been largely counteracted by the pestilent doctrine on which all the Churches have insisted, that honest disbelief in their more or less astonishing creeds is a moral offense, indeed a sin of the deepest dye, deserving and involving the same future retribution as murder and robbery. If we could only see, in one view, the torrents of hypocrisy and cruelty, the lies, the slaughter, the violations of every obligation of humanity, which have flowed from this source along the course of the history of Christian nations, our worst imaginations of Hell would pale beside the vision."

21 months ago: Well put. I completely agree with you and Huxley.

I was raised Catholic and indoctrinated with 11 years of Catholic schools, but when I was free to think for myself and read a bit of history, the 350 years of the inquisition, the burning of 8 million wise women, or about the thousands of wars, genocides, mass murders and about the myriad other terrible things that are condoned based upon the Bible. or the Torah, or the Koran, I came to realize that religion has probably done considerably more harm than good.

O Lord protect us from your true believers!

There are thousands of Christian sects and each is willing to condemn me to hell because I do not share their bizarre beliefs. That really burns my butt!
21 months ago: Well, if I have any say: you ain't goin' to hell. And I don't think anybody in their right mind would consider sending you (nor me). Besides, as Huxley says, I doubt hell can be much worse than what the power-obsessed Religious leaders and their respective zealous herds have invoked.

"Life of Brian" should be mandatory viewing. Puts all things religion into perspective.
21 months ago: Al and V,

I feel bad that you all have had terrible religious experiences.

BTW - Thomas Huxley is an overt joke with regard to being any type of philosopher. His main problem with God was that if God existed he understood that it would go against the grain of his fornicating lifestyle. Therefore he chose not to believe for a season.

Don't paint everyone with the same brush. There are abuses and abusers everywhere.

Contrary to popular opinion both the religious and the secular have enough sins to go around. All of us deserve to be condemned.

When the show is over we will all know what the TRUTH of the matter is. In the meantime, live, love and learn.

21 months ago: I believe it should be a crime to brainwash any child into any doctrine, religious or secular. I say, don't teach the child anything at all. Let them learn for themselves. We should also abolish any mention of Santa Claus, the Toothe Fairy, the Easter Bunny, and professional "wrassling" should be outlawed.
21 months ago: OOTB -

"I say, don't teach the child anything at all. "

Dudage, you pray with your children don't you?

If so, you are teaching. Your values and beliefs will come out in your prayers. Prayer is positive and good discipline when handled properly.

BTW - that is not indoctrination, it's just good common sense for those who would live a spiritual life.

21 months ago: I know Huey. I was being facetious. I just wonder how many times they indoctrinate their own children with their own values, morals, and ideals. Seems like the religious are just easy targets.
21 months ago: Watch "Life of Brian". And pay careful attention to the scene where Brian speaks to the crowd, telling them all to be individuals. It's hysterical.

(and btw - I've not had terrible religious experiences. I love listening to music in churches. The acoustics are awesome)

21 months ago: A mind is a terrible thing to waste, especially to a cramped background of religious fervor. There is so much more out there. The whole history of the world, much of which includes the influence of religion. Learn about that. But look at it from the outside. That's the only way to see things. If you are standing too close, you can't see it.

Right. My soapboxing is done.

21 months ago: My philosophy is that you should strive to be a good person and teach your children through example. Most religions have the same basic definitions of what a "Good" person is, but also each culture even if religion is discouraged comes up with the same definitions because what is considered good benefits society.

If there is a good and just god I am sure she would allow me be with the good guys, but I am not certain if I would enjoy those big chicken wings though.
21 months ago: yep. If there is one. Personally, I think God is over-rated. I find people much more accessible.

21 months ago: I have to agree child abuse is happening regardless if you have an ax to grind with every religious affiliations or not. Just so happens we hear from the msm the child abuse cases that will make those news stations money.

What about all the child abuse cases that you have not heard about from the street corners of every middle class American home? Don't be a fool to think it is not happening more rampantly in secular America. It is, I seen it first hand.

21 months ago: The issue of punishing children for questioning religion affects me personally. People like those you describe are projecting their inner doubts onto their students. I have had trouble with some teachers of my children that considered certain questions "heretical". I have lived within Catholic orthodoxy, communist orthodoxy and Jewish orthodoxy. There are some people who use intangible values to asser their control over and to demean others. Many battles are not between different isms but between certain psychological types. You make a very good point, as does scotsmaster.
I know what he is talking about. I've spent my life with a foot outside every door You get to see certain common denominators between diffferent faiths, both secular and religious

As far as religions go, the Falun Gong (Falun Dafa) are fairly benign, unless you are gay, but I think it would be so cool to be able to walk through solid walls!
http://www.religioustolerance.org/falung...

For some reason , the Chinese persecute this religion much more than others. There is even reports of the government harvesting organs.

The point is that people should have the right to believe in whatever goofy philosophy they want to. I personally think the Sacred Flying Spaghetti Monster makes more sense than most other religions. http://www.venganza.org/

The 8 I'd Really Rather You Didn't s, beats the heck out of the 10 commandments, as far as advise for children growing up. http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.action...
