Gov. Scott Derails Plans for High-Speed Train
http://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local-beat/...

You would think a Governor of State that has 12% Unemployment and is ranked among the Top Five States with the worst unemployment would welcome 2 billion in Federal Money that would create much needed construction jobs, but not Rick Scott.

Scott wants to spend taxpayer money improving our current roads, except The Florida Turnpike and other State Roads already collect Tolls to pay for the roads while Interstate Highways still rely on Federal funds with some State contributions.

President Obama's 2012 budget includes $8 billion for high-speed rail in an effort for the U.S. to catch up with the rest of the world. Japan had the Shinkansen trains back in 1964, these days most of Europe and parts of China have high speed rail, but not the U.S. for some reason.

The only part I disagree on is where in Florida to put it. Tampa to Orlando is only 84.89 miles along I-4, while Miami to Orlando is 234.02 mile along The Florida Turnpike. Clearly to take advantage of High Speed Rail it should be from Miami to Orlando.

No, Rick Scott has already presented his 65.9 billion dollar State budget and rather than create new private sector jobs to build high speed rail, with 90% of the cost paid by the Federal government, he is all set to cut 8,645 State jobs, more than 200 of which get cut this Saturday the 19th when all toll roads become Toll By Plate and no longer need Toll Booth Workers to collect cash.

It makes me wonder what Scott will derail next. What was Scott's campaign slogan again? "Let's Get To Work, Just Don't Take The Train"

15 months ago: Right On Gov Scott.

It ain't government's business. (what an oxymoron "government's business")

We need more like Gov. Scott.
15 months ago: What were the strings that were attached?

2 billion dollars does not come without strings.

Maybe just maybe...More federal government intrusion into your daily life?

Somehow? Somewhere?
15 months ago: Rick Scott is bad for the state of Florida. He already changed how people get unemployment here to. It went from 26 weeks to 12-20 weeks depending on how low the unemployment rate is at the time. And a new bill if it gets passed to make you do community service every week. I am sure there will be a lot more things he will screw us with he's a republican.

15 months ago: I was so pleasantly surprised at Gov Scott's bold move, I faxed him fan mail. Govt. boondoggles such as the HSR projects (that several governors have so far rejected) NEVER really create jobs. At least not for the long haul. The best thing the Federal Govt. could do for the economy is to slash spending, slash taxes, reduce regulation to the irreducible minimum and get the hell out the economy's way. In very little time the money will flow into the District of Criminals' coffers as the economy rebounds with a vigor not seen since FDR.

15 months ago: Maybe the commuters could take the shuttle. Oh, wait...not any more. Obama scrapped that one.
15 months ago: We're you all aware that Rick Scott BOUGHT the Governors job by spending 78 million of his own dollars to beat Bill McCollum, Attorney General of Florida in the primary and then Alex Sink, Chief Financial Officer of Florida in the general election.

Rick Scott was CEO of HCA/Columbia, which was fined 1.7 BILLION to settle Medicare/Medicaid Fraud, right before he resigned. Bill McCollum's office was investigating Scott at HCA/Columbia, which is why Scott wanted to beat McCollum so badly for the Governors job, not because Scott cares about Florida.

So Scott has a track record for ripping off people in Florida. Now he just may have lost 2.4 billion in Federeal money that could have helped a lot of Florida's unemployed.

15 months ago: Rick Scott is showing something called responsibility. 100% of the Federal money to build the high speed rail would be borrowed from other countries, primarily non-democratic countries.
In addition, the potential tax burden to Florida taxpayers due to delays and cost over-runs could top $3 billion. Now the Federal attorneys are exploring ways to force Florida into accepting the money. Of course, California has already stepped up, and said that if Florida doesn't want the borrowed money, they'll take it.
15 months ago: No, Rick Scott is going to cost Florida 24,000 jobs that building and running this high-speed rail would bring. In a State with 12% unemployment in this economy that is not acceptable.

Not to mention that Scott wants to cut the number weeks Floridians can collect unemployment AND make them do Community Service work of some kind in order to collect it. What's next Rick, putting the unemployed on the Chain Gangs with the State Prisoners?

15 months ago: And just how many Floridians do you think would actually get those jobs? Where did you get your figure?

The government already tried the Amtrak thing, saying it would be a boost to the economy, and a time saver. It has been nothing but a drain on taxpayers money since its inception.

Unless the government has plans to sharply curtail private transportation, the high speed rail will be another golden goose that doesn't lay eggs.
15 months ago: I got the 24k number from local news that was covering the story. It was a later on air update from the same TV station I linked to in the original post.

Amtrak was the government takeover of private passenger railroads that were going out of business due to more automobiles and increased airline travel. At the time it was created in 1971 people thought it would fail as well, but it's still alive.

Private companies will never build high-speed rail. It take government involvement to get a project of that scope built. The process of acquiring the right of way alone would require government involvement to get it done. Aside from the airlines and Amtrak, how else do Americans travel in mass, Greyhound?

It's painfully clear that Rick Scott does not care about Florida's working class and losing this money and jobs to another State shows that.

It's OVER. Thanks Rick!

I guess his "Let's Get To Work" slogan did not apply to all the out of work construction workers a project like this could have helped.
