There has to be a lesson here. What happens when you cut the city budget in the wrong places? What's the big deal if you toss your half eaten sandwich on the subway tracks.
In a video that looks like it was shot in the darkest days of the Lindsay administration, a rider on the number 4 train in Brooklyn, New York can be seen coming face with his worst nightmare when a chubby, orange rat crawled up his leg and stared into his face. Fortunately, the horrified man was able to scare the rat away.
The bad habits of New York City commuters are responsible for trash fires and also for fearsome looking rats that can be seen by New York commuters scampering along the subway tracks. New York's rat population is like a city within a city. Cold weather, construction projects that disturb underground rat tunnels and accumulations of uncollected garbage can all drive rats out of their accustomed venues and too close to humans for comfort.
As this New York Post video makes clear, there are consequences to cutting the budget in the wrong places. Doing more with less will only go so far.
