Hi Everyone.

I wanted to take a moment to give you a little RantRave update. I'll start with the bad news. Last December, we decided to give you, the writers, 100% of your AdSense impressions. This was an attempt to attract more users and grow the community. Unfortunately, this plan didn't exactly pan out, so we have made the decision to revert back to the 50/50 split. We've got to pay our bills, too. This will go into effect early next week.

I would like to help you better your odds of appearing in both Google News and organic Google searches with a few Dos and Don'ts.

First, here are a few pointers to help you get your posts approved for Goggle News and appear in organic searches…

Write about Trending Topics

Visit sites, such as Google Trends and Twitter to find out what people are searching for right now. A good example of this working was when Michael Jackson died. I wrote a post about his death, just as it was confirmed, and it almost immediately had 12,000 views (then the site crashed). The same day, someone wrote about a rumor that Jeff Goldblum had died and it achieved 15,000 views. Obviously, these are extreme examples, but using these sites should help you easily achieve 1000-5000 views in a day. And, 50% of 1000 views is better than 100% of 50.

Use Titles that will inspire clicks

When choosing a title for your post, decide if it is something people will search for, or click on if they find it. A post titled "Not again!" will not attract as many clicks as a post titled "Newest Oil Leak Fix Fails." With the second title, it is obvious what the story is about. The first title could just as easily be talking about last night's Mariners game.

As an example, last summer I built a table for my BBQ. I found the plans online and was impressed with them, so I wrote a Rave. The title was "DIY Big Green Egg Table by NakedWhiz". If you search "big green egg table plans", my post is #4, right ahead of NakedWhiz's own site. In that first month, I only had 100-200 clicks, but now has over 10,000.

Keyword Saturation

Keyword Saturation is key to having your posts rank well with organic Google searches (meaning, regular Google searches, not Google News). As a general rule, you want your searchable term to appear 2-3 times for every 100 words (2-3% saturation).

Both Keyword Saturation and a strong title will ensure your post has lasting power in organic Google Searches.

Things to Avoid:

Here are a few things to avoid…

WRITING IN ALL CAPS

THIS SHOULD BE A NO BRAINER. WHEN YOU TYPE IN ALL CAPS PEOPLE FEEL LIKE YOU ARE YELLING AT THEM. NO ONE LIKES TO BE YELLED AT, SO THEY WON'T READ YOUR POST.

Directing posts to a specific person

When you direct your argument at a specific person, you are automatically alienating the other 6.799999 billion of us who may be reading. If you have something to say to a specific person, send them a personal message. If they've blocked you, take the hint and move on.

Writing less than 200 words

Google doesn't like short posts, so I don't care for them either.

No Paragraphs

If you write 500 words, but fail to space it in any way, shape or form, it looks like a massive wall of words and no one wants to read that. It's overwhelming.

Improper Punctuation/Grammar/Spacing

Most of you should have learned this one in elementary school. Posts with misspelled words, improper punctuation (or a complete lack of it), or paragraphs that don't have a space between them look tacky and won't find their way to Google News.

Inappropriate/Irrelevant Picture or YouTube Vid

If you're writing about one topic, don't use a picture of something completely obscure or inappropriate. And, don't use the same picture for every single post. Please.

Uncited Sources

If you write about a story, but lack any citations of any kind, I have to assume it is made up and will, therefore, not submit it to Google News.

Lack of any original content

If you write about a news story that you read about somewhere else, but do not add any opinion, I will not approve it for Google News. The site is called "RantRave", not "Look at this news story I found somewhere else."

Cut and Paste

I've ranted about this before, but if I can find your story, word for word, on numerous other sites, I can only assume you did a cut and paste job. Not only will you not be approved for Google News, your post will probably be deleted, as well.

None of the above offenses will get your posts deleted, but you likely won't see your posts in Google News.

There you have it. With these tips, you should be able to achieve a much higher view count. I know you're probably bummed about the 50/50 split, but hopefully this helps ease the pain.

Thanks everyone!

19 months ago: First, I understand you need to pay the bills. But, having just written you an email about 2 weeks ago to verify the actual amount of Adsense, you assured me it was 100% and asked where the wrong info was on the site. So, was this crap then? Is that why you didn't change it?

I think the bait and switch with the 100% is a bunch of B.S. You know, if you want to show some kind of good faith, roll it down to 75% instead of jerking half of it. I just told a friend last night what a cool site this it, but I tell ya my opinion rapidly changed. If you want to be competitive with other writing sites, you have to do better than 50. The views on the site are inflated because the bots crawl frequently as it's a "news" site and the Alexa ranking is super low...much lower than other writing sites out there.

I like this site. I like the layout. I like the opinion part and throwing out to Google news. I'm sure the writers who were at 50 to begin with and then increased were happy, but writers lured in by "we're the only site to give the writers 100%" should be pissed. I really encourage you to up it to 75.

I didn't change the wrong info because I forgot, actually. The decision to bring back the split was decided 3 days ago, so the timing of your question was just bad luck, I guess.
19 months ago: @Alex - Thank you, I really hope you do consider it. It looks like there are around 3000+ writers here and I can tell from the titles that not everyone uses SEO, which means less money. I write for some other sites and I just can't imagine doing it anywhere for under 75. I'm not sure you can be competitive? It just seems sort of unstable or like I mentioned the sense of being duped by a bait/switchy feel. I know some strong writers who would probably consider writing here, but no way for 50.

None of this is to say that you guys shouldn't have a cut of the Adsense. Of course. I thought 100 was generous. The site is awesome. I love the platform. I made the front page! I want to write here a long time. I have a lot to say! I hope you'll give it a shot at 75...trial run it. Take care.
19 months ago: I'll try to help you out for giving me this opportunity to rant...er...no... rave.

19 months ago: Considering that Rant Rave was put up for sale, I think 100% was generous to a fault. The attraction for me is not the opportunity for dollars but the forum itself that openly encourages a diverse set of opinions covering the entire social-political-religious spectrum.
19 months ago: If your purpose to post to this site is purely financial, I'd say you are on the wrong site. If your purpose is to share your views and offer your opinion on other people's views and possibly make a nickel too boot, then this is a good place to be.

I have AdSense set up but what little it generates doesn't even go to my account and since I haven't been writing much lately, it hasn't increased the balance in that account by more than a few cents.

I don't do this for the money, I do it because I think my opinion might be of interest to others and to offer alternative views to other people's opinions, sometimes with not so expected results.

If this were the company that pays royalties on the gas well nearby (small as they may be), I'd be up in arms but since the revenue is something I didn't plan on when I started posting here it is just a good deal to us all.
19 months ago: It's not purely financial at all. I am really glad I stumbled onto this site. I'm a writer, but I also agree with you that I think my opinion may interest others as well as initiate paradigm shifts or plants seeds of change (some topics - Suboxone article is one). I think writing my opinion and making money sounds great.

I've been here a very short time. I don't think it's fair to say I may be here for the wrong reasons when they are advertising they beat out the competition for pay (and I'm familiar w/the competition's sites). I seriously thought "man, what an awesome combo!" it's just the sudden cut. You know, it's the whole perceived saying one thing, doing another. It's probably just bad timing. And, I do think 75 is fair.

You can make money doing this. All he says in the post is spot on. Titles are super important. I wont bore you though!

19 months ago: Thanks for this site and the tips to do better on posting articles. I really enjoy this site and do not do it for the money. I hope you can make money off of this great site you guys have created.
19 months ago: Frankly I never really understood the jump to 100%. But I also had no idea how many posters actually had adsense accounts so I though maybe there were enough of the non-ad posters to generate revenue for the site. Once the site went up for sale I think it became pretty clear there weren't. So...it is what it is. I haven't been posting regularly as it is the past few months, but I intend to start again, and certainly will not be deterred by my "pay cut".

That said...one question and one suggestion.

1 - Is R/R still for sale?

2 - If you want to grow the site you may want to consider ways to force posters to produce quality posts. One way may be to have a character minimum per post to eliminate some of these 1 paragraph posts that are usually directed to other posters. These kill the sites credibility. Also i have emailed before about having a "save as draft' option. I put it out there again. I know you can type the article in word and then cut and paste....but sometimes that can be a pain too when you are typing on the fly. Many brilliant (haha) rants and raves have never seen the light of day because I got distracted and never finished my post...only to have someone close the browser on me.

Also...I agree with Alex_ when he says the view count can be inflated here. There have been a view articles I have written that have spiked very heavy view counts on the first day only to for my adsense to show less than half of that number for all of my article combined for the day; prompting me to send similar emails inquiring about the adsense split.

19 months ago: Hey everyone,

Thanks for all the kind words and suggestions.

Harshaw -

1. No. I took it down this afternoon.
2. I still have your suggestion on The List, but since the site was for sale, we weren't exactly wanting to invest any more into the site. Since that's changed, we may be adding features in the future, but not right now. But, when we do, I'll suggest it again.

TheLegend - No, not anymore. It was an experiment. We learned people don't want to spend money on a site that doesn't make anything.

18 months ago: I tried to send you a message but could not. Anyhow, is there a way to make sure posts get published on Google news faster. I have been keeping track of Google trends and when economic news pops up it is fairly easy for me to write a good article on a company. Problem is by the time it gets published I have missed the hottest hours of clicking.

Do not get me wrong, I am not complaining because I write to learn not to make money but if getting the article to google news quicker means more clicks than that would be great for the site.

Just send me a message when you get a chance, thanks.
18 months ago: Thought I'd check in on this and see what's happening. I'm really digging this site. I love writing things for it, but I am also seeing a little money, which is super.

18 months ago: Right now, I've been focusing my attention on another project, so you're still all getting 100%. I'm still pretty sure we're going to reduce your cut, but I still don't know if it will be 50/50, 60/40, 75/25, or 83/17. When we make a decision, I'll let you all know.
16 months ago: Hi. I guess there has been no change as I signed up yesterday and the web site said 100%. 100% of nothing is the same as 50% of nothing, so you are safe with me so far. It would be nice to know, before I go gung ho though. I need to focus with one publisher rather than being so spread out. 100% definitely drew me in.

Then again, it isn't all about money with me either. I blog for free. I have experimented with Searchwarp. They require you have a certain level of points to begin earning any revenue. When the article fits, I write for Digital Journal. They have a pay system, but it is very nebulous. (I love them anyway).

Unless a site draws traffic--100% is meaningless. So, if you have a site that draws traffic and pay less (a little), it is likely worth the same or mroe than a 100% pay out.
14 months ago: Great writing site referrals. I'd never heard of either of them, but bookmarked them. Always great to add writing sites to my list.

The 100% pulled me in as well. I have made a decent amount of money writing here. I've seen others say they make pennies, so I don't know how far up the earnings go (bottom is 0 though). It's not just about the money though or my topics would be different.

Some tips -- make sure your post fits the Google News criteria. That's a great traffic source, especially if you write using solid titles, etc. Bing indexes this site fairly well. RantRave has a super low page rank, but you can make some nice side money if you pay attention to your writing.

I hope they tell us if/when the rev share changes. I have been pushing for them to not cut it down to half. That's a huge drop. It'd be nice to see some incentive to pull in other writers or something like a referral system, if they do drop the rev share. I like the site layout and think it has great potential above what it's doing now.
14 months ago: Thanks for getting my attention I have been researching even more shared revenue/publishing sites. (There are some interesting ones--infobarrel, Triond, allvoices (almost zilch editorial control--but accepted for Google News), brighthub (a lot of editorial control), Newsblaze...

I am experimenting with a Google Orkut Group (http://www.orkut.com/Main#Community?cmm=108358258 ) to try and give less popular writers to post links to articles. Similar to a link exchange, but not. I came up with this when I realized at some places I spent too much time READING other peoples work, and taking the time to comment--while they just continued to write without regard to anyone else in their "Fan" groups. The idea: If you make a thoughtful comment, you will receive a thoughtful comment.

...still trying to find my home. This is what I think about shared revenue--unless you are highly prolific (I am not. I tend too put too much research and thought into my articles), most likely it will be very few people who actually rake up enough hits for a payout. So, does it make more sense to write the article on your mind and in your heart, then find the best place for it?

I love qualifying my articles for Google News. Next Goal: Google Spotlight.

14 months ago: PS: Please correct the word "achieving" in the title to this post. It drives me nuts. Thanks.
