Racism. Is It According to the Skin I'm In?

There have been quite a few posts recently on racism. Between posts regarding the fringes in the Tea Party, the "New" BPP intimidating voters at the poles, murders of black children and anti-Semitic diatribes there sure is no loss for material.

What is racism?

Racism is the belief that the genetic factors which constitute race are a primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race.
Wikipedia

"At some future period, not very distant as measured by centuries, the civilized races of man will almost certainly exterminate, and replace, the savage races throughout the world. At the same time the anthropomorphous apes, as Professor Schaaffhausen has remarked, will no doubt be exterminated. The break between man and his nearest allies will then be wider, for it will intervene between man in a more civilized state, as we may hope, even than the Caucasian, and some ape as low as a baboon, instead of as now between the Negro or Australian and the gorilla."
Charles Darwin

In the U.S. culture we are racially programmed, particularly in regard to the skin color issue. Because of our culture's racist roots, because of the way the world thinks, because of the influence of Darwinian thinking, we have been programmed to look at the exterior rather than the interior of a person, and to make broad judgments based on what we see.

Racism is the driving force behind all sorts of evil behavior, fears and compulsions. The racist individual is obligated to deny freedom to those they believe to be inferior.

Geneticists have found that if we were to take any two people from anywhere in the world, the basic genetic differences between these two people would typically be around 0.2 percent, even if they came from the same people group. One blood.
Scientists today agree that there is really only one biological race of humans. We would be well served to drop the term "race" from our vocabulary.

Skin color unfortunately still poses one of the greatest of problems to many people. Folk need to realize we are all the same. We all have the same coloring pigment in our skin—melanin. Whenever we speak of different "colors" we are referring to different shades of the one color. Some have more of it, some have less. Big deal.

In another post a fellow Ranter/Raver had this to say...
"True freedom would be to reject the entire premise that God's people came from the Middle East."

I beg to differ. True freedom and harmony will only come about through understanding that we are all one people, of one blood, from the same original ancestors. It will not come through the undermining of another's spiritual beliefs.

Sure, there are racists in some religious groups just like there are racist atheists, agnostics and skeptics. Many are bold enough to openly espouse it. But regardless of where the stupidity comes from it is still a symptom, not the problem. The problem is deeper than that. It's programming.

Had we not been programmed this way in this culture, we wouldn't see the differences as we do and make the inane judgments that all we all too often make.
In every case, without exception, it is the world and our sinfulness that drives our personal racism. It needs to stop.

We all need to treat every human being as our relative. We are of ONE BLOOD. All of us are equal in value before our Maker. The sooner we get there, the sooner this problem goes away.

The only race that matters is the HUMAN one.

Thank you for reading.

18 months ago: Good post and did you know that the original Star Trek broke a long standing American based racial taboo as portrayed here:

18 months ago: Yes, sir. Star Trek was a revolutionary show in a lot of ways.

The first time I saw the episode "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" with Frank Gorshin, I did not realize immediately that his character Bele was colored differently than Lokai.

Kirk - "You're black on one side and white on the other."
Bele - "I am black on the right side."
Kirk - "I fail to see the significant difference."
Bele - "Lokai is white on the right side. All of his people are white on the right side."

Very effective point in how folks can magnify differences and find reasons to hate.

I believe that originally the programing of racism, came from the extreme of mankind's mind.

Think of the extreme right and extreme left of any nationality or racial group.

There you will find the seeds of racism.

It is the mind that holds the clue.

Fear has a lot to do with racism and the inability of the mind to not be able to confront their fears, which then leads to hate.

Education and mental maturity, is the solution for the mind.

I tell it like it is, I pull no punches, tell no lies, and I am as I am

Glad to hear that so many people think that racism is no longer a problem. All of the hysteria about those from the south is entirely economic and has nothing to do with their skin pigment.

You had one quote that sounded familiar: "True freedom would be to reject the entire premise that God's people came from the Middle East."

I agree with you that Racism has more to do with programing, and who does more programing than the religions?

Sounds like a discussion that had nothing to do with race. It had to do with the origine of organized religion. About 55% of all religions (more like 65% if you exclude the non religious) all have the same origins in the Mideast.

The quote was about violence in religion and the fact that the Jewish , Christian and Islamic religions all worship the same God of Abraham and they all have sacred texts that advocate stonings and the other cruel punishments that Islam still practices.

I did not intend to imply that those who had their racial roots in the Mideast had violent temperaments, but rather that the religious philosophies had a similar root and that the Budhists were much more benign.

18 months ago: Thanks Al. I appreciate your input.

I wish racism were no longer a problem. But people seem to find reasons to hate whether they are based on so-called race, religion or otherwise.

Economics has taken race out of the picture to a large degree. Look at our President for instance. Fear made America temporarily color-blind.

The fear of economic collapse put Obama in the White House regardless of his skin color. Bottom line is every body's money is green and in this world money runs the table. Can anyone say British Petroleum?

As far as programming, religious folk are no more or less programmed than any other mind set. The only real difference is where the programming comes from and how dogmatic the followers of that programming are.

Buffalo, NY is dealing with a recent gang related mass shooting. The question being brought up about why black men are killing each other at a rapid pace. One talk radio show brought up the question and was only having black Americans answer the question. They said alot of it had to do with self esteem issues because for generations that majority of the black communities have been in poverty and has adapted to that lifestyle. Resorting to the drug lifestyle.

Many stated they don't have good role models but if you look at all the pro sports all stars they have plenty of role models.

Me on the other hand I think alot of it stems from what their parents are teaching them at a young age. The biggest factor I see is the lack of jobs within inner cities..most companies will close down their business in fear of gang violence.

I was just in Walmart the other day and some man that happened to be black was literally staring at me. I nodded my head towards him but he gave me a seriously mean looking stare. I just shrugged it off and finished my shopping. Makes you wonder what he was so pissed off about though? Maybe it was because I have real short buzz cut that he would think I am some skinhead or something. Who knows.
