"Pink slime," a cheap meat filler, is in 70 percent of the ground beef sold at supermarkets and up to 25 percent of each American hamburger patty, by some estimates... "It kind of looks like play dough," said Kit Foshee, who was a corporate quality assurance manager at Beef Products Inc., the company that makes pink slime. "It's pink and frozen, it's not what the typical person would consider meat."

"Does the American public really know what's inside the ground beef they're eating? A new report claims much of that meat is filled with what's being called "pink slime."

NICE! That is more than I wanted to know! Turns out pink slime isn't even really that pink... kind of a pale redish grey... false advertising, oh yeah, they don't even have to declare that it is in your burger! That's OK, cause it is USDA approved!?!

Who was the first idiot that thought that 'pink slime' was a good idea?
Must have been a vegetarian !:]

Anyway we are having burgers tonight, and we wondered where a person could get some with out the 'pink slime' ...Canada Eh! That's right, apparently this 'cutting-edge' product hasn't made it into Canadian beef burgers just yet.
Some times it pays to be "behind the times" !:]

"Fear not, Canadian carnivores. The so-called "pink slime" used in some U.S. hamburgers that has become a hot topic this week, mostly because of the gross-out factor, is not used in Canada."

So in a way it is good they aren't "wasting" any of the cow. But on the other hand the hide is full of ecoli bacteria and contaminates the scraps so they add ammonia to kill that stuff.

It would be nice if our government regulators weren't so underpaid so we could have confidence in what we were eating.

It is enough to make you into a vegetarian.

This is why I'm almost a vegetarian (can't seem to give up turkey!)--plus, all that gross stuff they put in everything (you should look into what goes into purdue, GROSS!)...

15 months ago: You got it TLTW,

I posted a picture of the chicken version of the mechanically separated goop for effect, and you caught it... but the beef version of the product isn't any better !:] Looking back on my wording, I didn't mean to insinuate that vegetarians were idiots, rather to the contrary... but if one was a carnivore and still thought that pink slime was a good product. But if one thought that the veggies were any safer, one would see GMO contamination of produce is just as bad or worse...

I have a study of my own. My ancestors on my father's side were all city folk, ate store bought food, and all died in their 50's, 60's and 70's. On my mother's side were country folk, butchered their own meat and grew their own food. I've sat down to meals of greens, peas and fried hog fat. Yes just slabs of hogfat, fried till crispy and brown around the edges. Hey, it tastes better than tripe, and smells way better than chitlins. Anyway, the folk on my mother's side, the ones who eat all the lard and grease, they are the ones who live well into their 90's and beyond.

When I was in my teens, and attempted to "educate" my grandmother about the latest research on what all that unhealthy food was doing to her, and how she was going to die of a heart attack if she didn't straighten up, she told me the most ridiculous thing I had ever heard. She said that pork fat was actually good for you, as long as you were physically active. Thirty years ago, she said that pork fat actually keeps your blood vessels cleaned out. She even pantomimed the motion, similar
to taking a tuffy pad and scrubbing the inside of a hose. Well, thirty years later, science is catching up with the folk wisdom, and studies report that hog fat is beneficial.
