Only the public face death in Delhi, not officials: Official

Five workers were critically injured when the brand new footbridge they were tiling in preparation for the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games collapsed. Eighteen others were also injured.

Luckily, as Sheila Dik****, Delhi Chief Minister put it, "The over-bridge was for spectators not for the games officials or the athletes."

So, that's all right then. No important people were put at risk by that spectacular death trap.

Cleverly, the brand-spanking-new, expensive, modern, specially-designed, bridge was designed and built so poorly that it collapsed before a great number of spectators got to walk on it.

I hope the games go well, but that this bridge debacle inspires some more successes in India's ongoing fight against public corruption, particularly in contracting.

Also, Dik****'s name is not even remotely amusing - please have some cultural sensitivity you knuckleheads.

When I stated that the workers were "tiling" the bridge, I should have used the word "paving" as was reported.

Seems like The Commonwealth is an oxymoron.

20 months ago: When China hosted the Olympics they spent billions and proved that they could join the developed nations. Even Africa did a good job.

If India wanted to join the big boys they should have made the investment in planning in land above the flood plain.
20 months ago: We who live in developed countries take it as a given that building codes are in place and are followed. Japan's high rise buildings withstand strong earthquakes while Pakistan's mud buildings collapse from less violent earthquakes.

But it sounds like the media there, as it wrote that story, encourages reaction against the ruling class. What can we expect from media? The media isn't responsible for good building practices. Media sells best when it sells fear and anger.
