Kelley Williams Bolar, an Akron Ohio woman wanted the best for her child. Concerned about the substandard education in the Akron, Ohio school system, she has been convicted of falsely stating that her child lived with her father in the neighboring Copley-Fairlawn School District .Unfortunately for Ms. Bolar, the school district was cracking down on parents like her who were falsely claiming to reside within the Copley-Fairlawn School District. They went so far as to hire private investigators to tail her daughter and collected enough evidence to charge Ms. Bolar.
The school district did not want to recognise Bolar's daughter as residing with her grandfather in a joint custody type arrangement. As a result of Ms. Bolar's conviction, she is now a convicted felon, who might as a result be unable to realise her dream of becoming a teacher.
Ms. Bolar's daughter has, of course been sentenced to an inferior education in her own school district. Taxes are collected from inner city neighbourhoods and the parents who want to send their children to private schools must pay tuition on top of taxes to support a public school as well as their school of choice
It would be far fairer for Kelley Williams Bolar to get a tuition voucher to spend in the school of her choice. A neighboring public school or a private school should be able to accept such a voucher and provide a decent education for the children of inner city residents. Ms Bolar has through her nine days in jail highlighted the crime of our current system of education, which protects substandard schools from competition and sentences children in the inner city to substandard education. Ms. Bolar deserves educational choice for her child, and so do all American parents.
