Obama is an intellectual and other things to ponder.

Barack Obama is an intellectual. This in and of itself is not a bad thing except that intellectuals expect other people to speak and think on their level and this simply will not happen. This is why his approval rating has gone down since his election. Despite president Obama's success rate at accomplishing many of the goals he set out to accomplish in his campaign promises many Americans will still accept the tirades of rumor spinners and gossip fabricators because it easier to do than to maintain a sharp and clear mind to process the complexity and enormity of the tasks set before their president.

His opponents and ill wishers take advantage of this to continuously distract the weak minded from engaging their cerebellums in anything more complex than flipping TV channels or Internet surfing. Their ultimate goal of course is to plant easily process-able images of an incompetent or unconcerned president. Most people don't respond to civil discourse and cooperation among adversaries because that does not make for good entertainment. They like to hear a verbal lambast and they like to see what appears as a clear hero and a clear villain.

Whoever is the most charismatic will usually be seen as the hero while the villain will be determined by the oppositions silence or patience in their demeanor. Sarah Palin learned this lesson quickly when she was selected as vice presidential running mate to Senator John McCain. The Senator most likely selected her because of the impartial way she dealt with corruption as governor of Alaska. A quality that made her an excellent VP for a man that was looking to eliminate corruption in congress and Washington.

But Ms. Palin quickly caught on that Sarah homemaker was not what America clamored for. She quickly transformed herself almost overnight into the Tea Party's Ramboesque Heroine complete with the same foundationless attacks and meaningless arguments. She is currently even campaigning for Americas popularity vote long before she has even declared her candidacy. Thus bypassing any rules that might hinder an actual campaigning candidate. She remembers her own personal wardrobe-gate while running with McCain. Proving once and for all that if she does get Americas vote that charisma and showmanship get more attention than an intellectual appeal from a conservative democratic president.

11 months ago: The ignorant always used to make fun of those 'Pointy Headed Intellectuals", but in an increasingly complex world we have become more and more reliant on these talented and intelligent people who rely on the best evidence from the top scientists and experts in all fields.

I would rather trust these guys with running the country, the schools, the hospitals, the research centers. Matter of fact I can't think of one professional field where it is not an advantage to be smart and knowledgeable.

I am leery of even hiring Joe the plumber to clean out my sewer pipes because he might not believe that water runs downhill. (It will get up that hill if your faith is strong enough).

About 70% of Americans used to believe in anthropogenic Climate Change. Now it is down to 50%. Those are the same folk who question Evolution. They are the same folk that wanted to invade Iraq. A good percentage of these guys thought Saddam had a role in 9/11 and that he had nuclear weapons and WOMD despite the evidence.

These people have the same mindset as those who condemned Galileo for saying that the earth went around the sun. Heretics that challenge and threaten the dogma and the status Quo are given the most horrific punishments and tortures.

The scientist and economists are challenging the world view that the world is made for exploitation and that it is too big to harm with our pollution. The economists are challenging the trickle down supply side, voodoo economics that has been repeatedly disproven, yet is the required Dogma of all Republicans.

The Right wing is becoming the new No Nothing Party because they would rather believe the Fox, Hate Radio, Propaganda machine, and think as they are told by their corporate masters, than believe the scientific facts or (increasingly) the evidence of their own eyes.

True. The climate scientists that dared challenge the "consensus" were fired, ostracized, and cast out.

I've known many thinkers in my life. I've known many chalkboard coaches. And I've come to realize that just because something looks good on paper, or sounds logical when you talk about it, doesn't necessarily make it a good idea.

You have to have a good balance of real world knowledge, or street smarts, or it doesn't matter how intellectual you are. You just won't have the tools to balance the fantasy world of your own inner musings with the actual world around you.

Think about the nutty professor, or the guy who made flubber. They both had great ideas, and they both broke a lot of stuff in the process. Just a movie? No, not really.

Are you also saying that for it to be something more than inner musings that person has to present it in a popular or acceptable context?

There is a difference between being intelligent and being an intellectual. As far as either goes, we have scant knowledge whether Obama is either. I haven't heard much said about Obama's scholarly pursuits, except in the vaguest of terms.

Second question.
Popular context has nothing to do with it. Workability is key here. I once worked with an extraordinary engineer. He had a vast capacity for retention, and could throw a plan together on a moments notice. But all his knowledge was based internally, as he had very little physical experience. Many key aspects of his plans had to be based upon assumptions. As logical as they might sound, they were more often wrong than right.

Here is an example of exactly this problem:

With unemployment hovering near 10 percent nearly two years after President Obama signed his economic stimulus package, Mr. Obama is acknowledging that, despite his campaign promises, "there's no such thing as shovel-ready projects."

I know, I know, It's all the Republicans' fault. They are the ones who do all the permits and government intrusion into businesses who just want to put people to work.

The problem with the climate whores that the fossil fuel industry hired to spread doubt, is that their unconventional ideas that CO2 does not effect the environment, or that humans are not causing the climate change, is that it is simply not backed up by ANY research or observational Data. Few of these so called "scientists" who prostitute their scientific principles to serve their fossil fuel masters are able to get published in authoritative scientific journals because their work or theories cannot be verified or duplicated by other scientists. These journals do not want to ruin their reputations by publishing obvious nonsense.
