One of the strongest arguments for a republic is that it promotes loyalty to a system rather than blind loyalty to a leader. Even a wildly popular leader needs to be humbled by the knowledge that he must follow a constitution.

At least as critical as the role of the republic is the role of schools. One of the first things I learned as a child in school was that not everyone shared my parent's opinions. It was back in the 1960's when Republican John Volpe was running against Democrat Francis X Bellotti. I was the only kid whose parents supported Bellotti. My only knowledge of the issues was the fact that a local Republican campaign headquarters let us take bumper stickers and buttons for free on our way to the candy store. The discussion in class was as intellectually deep as it would be if it had revolved around baseball. Our teacher was a nun of the old school who would not even hint at her personal opinion. In matters of politics, according to her, you do not raise your hands. When we asked her who she was voting for, she was like a sphinx.

When I was in high school in Italy, I had a teacher who voted communist and a classmate whose father was an ardent admirer of Benito Mussolini. The fact that I liked both the teacher and my classmate forced me in a memorable way to separate my feelings about individuals from my feelings about their political convictions.

When I saw a video of some public school children being taught songs of praise for President Obama, I was appalled. The children were even younger than I was when I went to school at the age of nine with a lapel full of free campaign buttons and knowledge of my parent's gubernatorial choice. A better lesson in civics would have been the one that I got as a child, that we all have opinions that differ and we all have to live together. This is basic civic literacy. Its loss is no less tragic than the manner in which standards of literacy have fallen and deteriorated.

School is supposed to be a safe haven in which children are exposed for the first time to diversity of opinion and thought. It takes special skill to explain social issues in a way that a child can understand them. Any teacher who respects their own mission should be loathe to let education deteriorate into indoctrination. I had a teacher in high school who required that I participate in a World War I peace conference as a representative of Austria Hungary. I wanted to be a representative of the newly victorious Bolshevik government, but she wouldn't budge. She made it clear that I had to put myself in the shoes and mindset of an ideological opponent.

Lessons from my childhood took years to blossom and take root. They have served me well as marriage and work has put me in close contact with people of different persuasions than my own.

It did not bother me to see children singing praises of Obama . If they had done so at recess, it would have reminded me of my childhood. What bothered me was that the song was being taught during school hours in what looked like a school auditorium. When I was a kid, we went to the school auditorium to sing America The Beautiful, Home On The Range and Kumbaya. These songs and others were the common ground upon which Americans meet. It was with time and maturity that I learned their value as common denominators. The auditorium was a place where you were supposed to be on best behavior.

Millions of Americans hail Obama as a standard bearer of ideas that they hold dear. Millions of others oppose him. Our constitution and social traditions provide the common ground to meet as our fleeting loyalties shift in the sands of time. It is critical for children to learn that there are others in the world with opinions that may seem strange to them, and that there is decency and goodness in those who differ.

Teachers should be teaching children how to think, along with the basic rules and values of a civil society. Teaching songs of praise for Obama does nothing to advance this goal. At a time when there is heated debate about our nation's future we should be demanding better from our teachers and our schools.

************************************************************************************

For reference, I have included the Obama praise video and the words the children are being taught to sing. If the video is taken down, I have uploaded to my personal site. Information is taken from the You Tube Link

This was filmed around June 19, 2009 at the B. Bernice Young Elementary School in Burlington, NJ.

Lyrics
========
Song 1:
Mm, mmm, mm!
Barack Hussein Obama

He said that all must lend a hand
To make this country strong again
Mmm, mmm, mm!
Barack Hussein Obama

He said we must be fair today
Equal work means equal pay
Mmm, mmm, mm!
Barack Hussein Obama

He said that we must take a stand
To make sure everyone gets a chance
Mmm, mmm, mm!
Barack Hussein Obama

He said red, yellow, black or white
All are equal in his sight
Mmm, mmm, mm!
Barack Hussein Obama

Yes!
Mmm, mmm, mm
Barack Hussein Obama

Song 2:
Hello, Mr. President we honor you today!
For all your great accomplishments, we all doth say "hooray!"

Hooray, Mr. President! You're number one!
The first black American to lead this great nation!

Hooray, Mr. President we honor your great plans
To make this country's economy number one again!

Hooray Mr. President, we're really proud of you!
And we stand for all Americans under the great Red, White, and Blue!

So continue ---- Mr. President we know you'll do the trick
So here's a hearty hip-hooray ----

Hip, hip hooray!
Hip, hip hooray!
Hip, hip hooray!

Everyone should email the school and protest her attempt to indoctrinate innocent children .I know by now obama ( the lack of caps was not a mistake ) himself has seen it and I bet our wanta be rockstar president loves it. He will no doubt go down as the worst president in American history. Sorry jimmy carter you have finally lost your title.People open your eyes we are losing our country and our rights to this far left media whore!!!!!!!!!!
28 months ago: I will bet ten dollars that by tomorrow, video will have surfaced of school children singing about Bush, Clinton, Bush Sr., and Reagan.

But until then, enjoy your mock outrage, folks.

He speaks, and the world is at peace. He smiles, and the world smiles. He waves his hand, and global warming is reversed.

"Hello, Mr. President we honor you today!

I'd like a list, please.

The problem arises when attempting to glorify an untested, untried *individual*, whose only claim to fame is being the first person with black genes elected as president. He's not even African American, by the standards of our current use of the term. He is not descended of those African Americans who overcame great adversity to claim equality in the United States. He is the product of an African and an American.

I think if I were black, I would be a little offended. He uses his skin color as a means to garner sympathy and support from the liberals and minorities, but has no history. His *people* never had to fight the good fight, and never had to overcome social injustice.

28 months ago: Ok, lets look at a few things . 1: If you want teach children a song to sing for the President, why not teach them, Hail To The Chief? That would be cute and it is widely regarded as the anthem to the office of the President.
2:Why is there a black history month, arent we all Americans and inst that injecting race in it`s self.3: Why if you are white and you disagree with obama`s policies you are a racist but if you are black it`s ok to disagree? 4:Going back to the song , why sing it to the arrangement of Jesus Loves The Little Children. This is clearly indoctrination and anyone that does`nt believe it is a moron.

28 months ago: The point is that children are subjected to being indoctrinated into partisan hero worship by partisan educators - it's not right regardless of who's doing it.

From Rudi's opinion, it appears that he's implying that the Obama administration directed this as opposed to some Obama loving school administrators doing this on their own. Unless that was the case (the Obama administration directed it), this is just a partisan tea bagger tempest in a teapot.

Of course school children shouldn't be taught that Obama is the "true Christ" although it's kind of funny coming from religious fanatics who think it's appropriate to push for prayer in school, the Ten Commandments in school, religious creationism in school, and God in the pledge of allegiance which by the way was pushed through and made into law by Christian fascist lawmakers in 1955.

A teacher is supposed to teach desirable behavior and respect for our leaders. The fact that the teacher is encouraging fairness, equality, patriotism, and respect for our elected leader is commendable.

I suspect that the main reason you object is that you disagree with Obama's "Plan" (That must be the plan to turn all school kids into thoughtless zombies), but I think they were singing about his plan to restore the economy to health. (A plan that is working by the way).
I see this as positive and not too much different than Rudi's "that we all have opinions that differ and we all have to live together."

28 months ago: How much of Economic Recovery Act has been put into effect as of now? How much of the stimulus money has been released?
If the bulk of the plan hasn't even been used yet, how is it helping the economy?

Why did unemployment go up to over 9.5% when he said it wouldn't go over 8% under his plan?

Why are almost all recessions/corrections in the history of the United States between 9 and 16 months in duration?

Why don't people know the answers to these questions?

You poor uninformed moron , how can compare singing carols to changing lyrics for the sake of indoctrinating or children. Your response is typical left wing ignorance. You sound like Pelosi Reid and the rest of the idiots that make up the lowest rated congress in American history. If your going to get involved in an argument at least try to keep it an educated argument. And those who want to call me a Teabagger. I only teabag moron libs like yourself.

I know it makes people mad when we even say "President Obama" It's many people's worst nightmare. "A black socialist President with Roots tied to a black supremacist church." Oh Lordy, Lord whatever are we going to do. OMG - he's not even really black.

Lot's of stupid comments on this post. Guess that's bound to happen here from time to time.

Some of you so-called Christians on this post need to pray for the man as much as you insult him and anyone who tries to have an objective opinion.

Welcome to Rant Rave, and kudos for jumping right in and attempting to regale me with your inelegant aspersions. With a bit more effort and practice though, perhaps you can write a more nuanced form of ad hominen with some biting sarcastic wit. If you're going to insult me, I expect to be entertained with some ruffling of my feathers. By the way, if you need an avatar for your profile, here's one that might fit you:

http://tinyurl.com/yc86rll

Now as to your focusing on the mere fact that a song was written in honor of our esteemed leaders, let's go back in the time machine once again:

"New school is named for first lady
Dallas Morning News - NewsBank - Feb 29, 1992
The Barbara Pierce Bush Elementary School, which opened last month with 500 ... The students also sang two songs, including one written in her honor."

So not only did King Bush I have a school named in his consort's honor but the children were forced to write a song and perform for the Queen. I guess it would have been too much to expect a song in honor of King Bush since he was most undeserving, and lost his thrown after one term in office.

Thanks for the avatar. I am constantly amazed how the memory of most libs doesnt extend beyond Bush. Anyway I think we could agree that all through history we could find songs written for current or past presidents. But for my life I can not remember a president with so many ties to radicals and socialist. Not only ties but actually put them to work in the White House. I do use the term socialist loosely , because he really wouldnt even make a good socialist. A true socialist would not spend money the way Obama has. Anyway it is the actions and history of this president that causes people to come to conclusions. So for most of us when see things like this it strikes a nerve. I guess I shouldnt be worried the house and congress will shift next November. At that point he is pretty much a lame duck.I just hope he doesnt completely ruin the greatest country in the world.
PS. I apologize for calling you a moron. I got caught up in the moment
28 months ago: So many Obama haters out there that those racist and non-racist conservative talk show hosts are having a field day.

The most of the comments in my last response were meant to be sarcastic but I know that they reflect the reality of thought of many.

Obama has been in office 8 months. Elected by the people of this country. Be that as it may, there are those out there who can't even stand the sight of his face and that is wrong. NOTHING he says, thinks, or does is right in their eyes and it never will be as long as his middle name is "Hussein"

I'm far from a liberal but I'm not a right-wing nut-job either.

With regard to moral obligations, I'm the first to call out the President there. He needs to get out of bed with that genocidal Planned Parenthood group before he can talk to me about morals. But that doesn't mean I will allow the enemy to develop hatred or bitterness toward him in my heart.

I know the Right wants a do-over as far as the election is concerned. That's not happening for almost another 4 years. They hould have had enough sense not the parade Mr. Magoo and Betty Boop in front of us as if that was a great alternative to what the Dems presented.

OOTB - you're a Christian. How much time have you spent in prayer specifically for the President's well being, wisdom for him to do his job, insight into how to face the challenges of his position, etc?

I am very careful of what I pray for. I feel that Obama's vision for our country is at odds with what I believe in as a Christian, and therefore I pray more that he is not successful in turning our country further away from God than it already is. I do pray that he will make decisions that will benefit America and the world, and I feel that a few of his choices may do that. But I also feel that he has made bargains that he cannot get out of, that will be of great detriment.
28 months ago: OOTB - That's way cool. I may be little bit more optimistic than you are but I understand where you are coming from.

Just remember to that God can change Obama's heart.
28 months ago: Gregoire - God bless you. And to me that's not some religious catch phrase, I mean it.

You are a deep thinker and have a conscience. None of us has all the answers but we all live on the same planet. We owe it to each other to do what we feel is the right thing in either thought, word or action. Not because we are so smart and everybody else is so ignorant, but because we know everything we do has an effect on others for better or worse and that matters to us.

I love Rant Rave. I just discovered this forum a few months ago. Since I've been on here, everyone (nut-jobs included) has caused me to think in ways I have not thought before or at least look at things from a perspective I may not have done in a long time.

We don't have to always agree on things (if we do someone is not thinking) but if we have some information or perspective that is worthy of sharing, we take the time to do it. We not only do it, but we live in a country that allows to do it. For that I am thankful.

If you're sitting on the far end of one political spectrum, the people sitting on the opposite end appear radical.

..I am constantly amazed how the memory of most libs doesn't extend beyond Bush..

Left or right, I think most hard case ideologues have a selective recall of history or partisan blinders, but I'm happy to jog their memory when they get a case of double standards induced amnesia. Being more pragmatic than partisan, my memory extends much farther back then Bush 1 & 2 and you shouldn't necessarily presume my 'liberal' or 'conservative' credentials:

You have overlooked the most important and by far the larger demographic. The are millions of people in the middle,in both parties that think Obama is an idiot. Its the people at the extreme right and the extreme left that are the problem. The people in the middle , all colors all races that suffer.
