Obama Hates the British

Apparently, President Obama doesn’t like the British. During Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s recent trip to Washington, Obama was rude and inconsiderate on multiple fronts. For starters, the first joint press conference with the president and prime minister was canceled “due to snow.” Next, when one was finally scheduled, Obama’s team told Brown’s team that they could not have any British flags in the background. Only after a fair amount of begging did the Brits get their flags.

Next, when the two families met and exchanged gifts, it was clear that the Obama’s were thoughtful enough to tell a page to “go get something nice,” while the Brown’s clearly put some thought into the gifts.

Obama received from Brown a pen holder, made out of timber from the HMS Gannet, a Navy vessel that made several anti-slavery missions to Africa. He also received commissioning papers for a Royal Navy ship that has served as a symbol of goodwill between the US and UK. Lastly, he received a first-edition, 7 volume biography of Winston Churchill.

Obama gave Brown a 25-DVD set of classic movies. I hope he, at least, made sure they play on Region 2 DVD players (as opposed to Region 1, which is the US standard).

For the children, Sarah Brown, the UK first lady, gave the Obama girls outfits from a British clothing chain and selected 6 books, written by British authors, which have not yet been published in the US.

Michelle Obama bought two matching model helicopters, modeled after Marine One. They’re available in the White House gift shop (see third link).

This only adds insult to injury. The anti-Britain attitude started last month. A bust of Winston Churchill, from the British Government’s art collection, had been on display in the Oval Office since 2001. British officials offered to let Obama keep it for another 4 year, but the White House responded, “No, thank you.”

Why does Obama hate the British, so much? I thought electing Barack was supposed to help our standing in the world, but he’s just pissing a lot of people off.

39 months ago: Sensationalism is your forté my good man. Keep it up. You are well on the road to becoming the RantRave equivalent of Glen Beck. Got any long-winded, touching stories about sweaters you want to read next?
39 months ago: Liberals always attack whenever they can't think of anything contributory to say. Actually, as far as this story goes, it is exemplary of the Obama's and the amount of thought they give towards anything meaningful.

They created an empire based upon trade, if that's what you mean. They also fought Amercian ships in order to free their slaves: we both have complicated histories and both had empires (America's was in the Pacific). And most of the British empire (including India, Pakistan, South Africa etc) still want to be associated with Britain in the Commonwealth. Millions voluntarily fought with Britain and the US in WW2, the British Commonwealth exists to promote democracy (isn't that in America's interest too?) and Commonwealth soldiers (from Canada or Guyana) are fighting today for Britain under American commanders in Afghanistan. Lots of reasons for a little common respect.

In diplomacy, the UK and the US have been playing a mutually benificial double act for years, for example helping to deal with Gadhaffi and Iran. And various parts of the two countries, from the police to security services to childrens' agencies, have the kind of personal rapport than means a beat cop in the US chasing some criminal from Europe, can just pick up the phone and get a policeman in Britain to help him. That kind of trust takes decades to build up and only a moment to throw away. There is generally so much fellow feeling and ease of contact between Americans and the British, and it's kept going by simple acts of appreciation: how does it help Americans to jeapordise all that?

When I read about Obama's buying Brown DVDs he can't see, it was on the same day I read about another British soldier dying in Afghanistan, fighting under and therefore for US commanders and therefore for Mr Obama. How must the family of a dead British soldier feel when they see their own Commander in Chief insulted?

About BP: when the American Torrey Canyon tanker and the Piper Alpha rig spilt oil on British beaches, destroyed sea life which has still not recovered and poisoned and killed British people, there were no Britons stamping on the Stars and Stripes, our leaders played down the American connection and the British victims had to fight the U.S. for compensation every step of the way. Meanwhile U.S. contractors were involved in the Gulf of Mexico spill. So why is your leader so anti-British?

The fact we can both freely critisise our own governments means we can take mutual insults on the chin. But if you insult our democratic representative abroad, then you insulting 60 million people: white, black, liberal, right-wing, men, women, the soldiers that are dying..... all of us. And what for? Unless its the English-speaking based culture of America he dislikes?

He just makes me sad.

22 months ago: This story has surfaced again now that Obama's racist attitudes are, again, on show.
This man has single-handedly turned the British people from Pro-American to anti in the course of 18 months. Whilst we thought Gordon Brown was a **** we still do not appreciate his humiliation as our representative nor the return of Churchill's bust.
America will regret this President. The whole world is becoming Anti-American now........and just as it is bankrupt, over borrowed and turning into a South American/sub Saharan country.
America is fast becoming a failed State. Britain, Europe, Russians and China already own most of it and its debt.
Well, you have the right President, economy and politics for such a scenario.
The Chinese are already selling you beads and trinkets.
16 months ago: Obama is a hypocrite. If he hates the British so much, why does he consider France his closest ally which has its own sordid history of slavery in the caribbean and in Africa, not to mention its colonial past in the middle and far east. I don't see why he should hate anyone. The current generation of Brits aren't responsible for what happened to his grandfather no more than the younger Germans are responsible for the holocaust, and he calls himself a "christian"? I thought christians weren't supposed to hate but to forgive. Obviously he's NOT!

if he hates the Brits so much, don't accept any more military assistance from them in Afghanistan and Iraq, or anywhere else for that matter. If I were the Brits, I'd abandon the ridiculous special relationship altogether. Let his beloved France step up to the plate for a change. As I said before, he's a hypocrite and a bigot.
