Obama Condoning Torture? ACLU Disgusted

Those of you in the “know” have probably heard about the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. Most of the buzz was about the alleged prisoner abuse taking place there. Luckily, the ACLU has sued the Justice Department citing the Freedom of Information Act to obtain photographs of the alleged abuse, and won. Furthermore, the Obama administration made it clear, in accordance with their policies of transparency, the photographs would be made public.

Alas, the Obama administration has flip-flopped. According to Robert Gibbs, the Obama Administration's press secretary, the photographs are now a threat to American soldiers. He said, "… the release of these photos could pose a threat to men and women we have in harm's way." He then added insult to injury by adding, “Nothing is added by the release of the photos”

The ALCU has released a statement saying, “The decision to not release the photographs makes a mockery of President Obama's promise of transparency and accountability.”

Unfortunately, both the high-ranking officials in the Obama administration who say the photos will put troops in harms way and the ALCU and critics of this flip-flop are correct. The release of the photos make American soldiers look even worse in the eyes of an increasingly hostile Muslim world. Yet, this does not excuse the Obama administration from withholding the photographs. According to their own policies which promise transparency and accountability, they might as well have tortured and abused the prisoners themselves. By refusing to release the photographs they are condoning the practices of their soldiers.

If Obama did not want transparency and accountability in his administration, he should not have promised it. If Obama wants to retain the faith of the American people he must release the photographs he already said would be released. With politicians on the left and right criticizing each other every day, this is just another smear on this administration’s image. If the American people wanted to repeat the last eight years they could have asked for a constitutional amendment to allow George W. Bush to remain in office. They did not. Therefore, President Obama, you must release the photographs, as promised. Without them, the credibility of your administration will continue to diminish until it is a shadow of its former self.

The soldiers abusing them. I'm not here to debate water-boarding, honestly, it's a whole different issue. The government said that was okay, and they took measures to avoid real harm. I talking about people who had light-bulbs shattered inside of them, those people were TORTURED. That's what the Obama Administration wants to cover up.

33 months ago: I beg to differ that the Obama administration has flip-flopped on this issue. I believe the Secretary of Defense is part of the Obama administration, and he has never been in favor of the release of any more photos.

Unfortunately, the President is between a rock and a hard place precisely because of the lunacy of the Bush regime. They argued that the abuse was an aberration not business as usual. The military has investigated and punished, according to CNN, 400 people for prison abuse. How is 400 people an aberration? Regardless, by stating that the photos would only inflame and empower the enemy, the President has, in effect, admitted that the photos would inflame and empower the enemy. Not releasing them, in effect, has the same effect. Which proves that this was not an aberration but, rather, a terribly misguided bunch of people led by people asleep at the wheel.

Now is the time to admit that grave mistakes were made, and begin reconciliation, not to sweep this under the rug and move on.

33 months ago: Wing: I would also like to urge a more careful choice of words than "Muslim World".

(a) There are over 1 billion Muslims world wide including over 20 million in the USA. Muslims in the USA or Canada, for example, do not necessarily share any familiarly stereotypical political views with those the media ascribes to Muslims of the Middle East.
(b) Even with Iraq, there are two sects of Muslims that are in a battle for control of the nation.
(c) Every person in America should be sickened by what has been done to Iraq in our name. Coming to grips with this will be as difficult as coming to grips with what ancestors of this nation did to the indigenous people and those they later imported as slave property. It will be painful. Looking at these photos and remembering that Iraq never did anything to us. It was Iranians that took our embassy officials hostage. It was Saudi Arabians fueled by Saudi Arabian money derived from our thirst for cheap, foreign oil, that took down our World Trade Center. It was our own foreign policy that favored and protected a nation founded by victims of an atrocity who then justified their own atrocities in the name of survival and purity that created most of this mess.

Until we acknowledge, as a nation, that two wrongs don't make a right and might doesn't make right, apologize for our mistakes, and strive to do right by our own Constitution and the the rule of international law we helped dictate post WWII, we shall be stuck in this tar pit preventing us from soaring like the beacon of hope our nation once was.

As for your insight into the damage, spot on in my book. Which is why I think releasing them is smart. This political tush-covering has gone far enough.

Muslim World was not a smart move. Generalizations not only offend others but detract from my arguments. Thanks for pointing it out, I should know better!

33 months ago: Are these the same photos we saw in the UK of prisoners being grossly abused by soldiers in Abu Ghraib?

I totally agree with your last post above Raver. I was also angry with our Government for following Bush in to the war, as were a lot of people in the UK. The majority of people here seemed dead against it at the time.

That said, now it is done I fully support our troops there. They do a job and do it as best as they can under the circumstances, moral blame lays squarely with the politicians. Of course, troops committing criminal acts shouldn't get away with it either.

Them Libs they want you to be able to have an open debate just to here themselves talk, not to maybe realize that they might be wrong, just as some conservatives believe.

Congratulations Prez B.O. you made yourself a good decision. It seems like you were a human, not a politician.
33 months ago: Tom, condoning could be as simple as knowing and allowing it continue. Approval is putting your signature on a piece of paper that orders it to continue.
