On Monday, North Korea, which seems bent on joining the nuclear club, exploded two nuclear missiles underground near the Chinese border. This follows North Korea’s launch of the Taepodong-2 long-range missile, which was launched in April. World leaders who are urging the United Nations to take swift action against the North Koreans have criticized this latest stunt.
North Korea has also said they will no longer abide by the fifty year old truce with South Korean. This, in response to South Korea’s decision to join a US-pioneered security initiative that searches ships for nuclear weapons, creates many potential threats for the Obama Administration and the western community.
The UN needs to take swift action. The old way of slapping North Korea on the wrist is obviously not working. The UN and the western world need to put their feet down and squash thing effectively. If this latest transgression is not punished it sets the precedent of leniency which could pose problems for the United States and others later when other hostile regimes decide they want to join the nuclear club. Nip this in the bud. There needs to be swift and harsh repercussions. The United States needs to send the message to hostile nations that we will not tolerate nuclear armament, period.
