Negotiating With Terrorists

Joplin Disaster Relief Held Hostage

The Trouble with negotiating with terrorists is that, if they get away with it, they will just go on and on doing more terrorism.

Once the ransom is paid for the hostage they just go out and find another hostage and do it over again.

Obama should never have capitulated to the republican demands when they held help to the uninsured hostage in exchange for tax cuts to millionaires we could not afford. Now they are blaming Obama for the fiscal crises they caused.

Now that they know that they can get by with terrorist tactics, they are holding the well-being of the entire nation hostage by promising not to pass the debt limit unless they get their way with cuts to social programs. They threaten to destroy the nation economically and send the nation and perhaps the world into another depression for their misguided ideology that has been proven to be unworkable.

Having gotten away with holding the unemployed hostage, now the Republicans are holding the victims of the tornadoes in Joplin hostage. These blood suckers have no shame. They are preying on the misfortunes of the poor who could not afford tornado insurance, and demanding that other unfortunates pay for this disaster by insisting that critical government services that they depend on be cut.

11 months ago: republicans say that we have a spending problem not a revenue problem. That is Bullpucky! Every single government agency except for the military is strapped for funds.

FEMA had a $3 billion shortfall even before Joplin and the tornado season isn't over yet.

We have a revenue problem not a spending problem. 2/3rds of corporations pay no taxes, and the super rich are only paying 16.7% taxes. The rich and the corporations haven't paid less taxes since the 20's. Indeed all Americans are paying less taxes then they have since 1958. This despite conducting two wars, and the the near depression we have to recover from.

Because we have been starving critical services our entire infrastructure is crumbling, our schools are underperforming, all of our nuclear plants are beyond design age and becoming dangerous and we are unable to compete with other nations for alternative energy sources.

Since the fossil fuel industry is creating more weather related disasters because of Global Warming, if the Republicans insist that disaster relief be paid for, let the fossil fuel industry pay for a larger disaster relief fund so we are prepared for the additional disasters we know will be coming.

So from this post and others... if we were to paint with these broad brush strokes... republicans are terrorists and Muslims are not?

Couple of things I don't understand. The mindset:

When you go to Sam's club or any other bulk outlet, you expect to get a better deal when you buy in bulk, whether it be the 120 roll box of toilet paper, the five gallon bucket of mayonnaise, or the case of dry cereal.
The richest 10% in the US pay 71% of all taxes collected. In other words, their purchasing power is diminished, not increased, by their ability to pay more. The bottom 50% of earners pay no income taxes, and very little in the way of fuel taxes and sales taxes. Is it any wonder that the rich expect to be able to bend the ear of their government officials? After all, they are the ones paying for virtually everything that gets done.

The other thing, on fossil fuels:
Should the fossil fuel industry pay more for disasters, or should the people who are using those fossil fuels foot the bill? I would put more of the blame on the people who actually burn the fuel, rather than the ones who supply the fuel. If no one bought their product, then there would be no problem.

How about this? Every fossil fuel supplier in the world decides they have enough money, and they close their doors. Then they ram through legislation banning the burning of any fossil fuels, to prevent anyone else from stinking up the environment.

Then, when the cars, trucks, trains, planes and boats run out of fuel, when the electric utilities go offline, watch the fun really begin.

That was me. I was wrestling with a point, and at the same time an abscessed tooth, using the charts from the above mentioned website. Never could get the thought to coalesce properly. I was noticing trends correlating peak revenue collections and ensuing recessions. Actually, the highest revenues ever collected were during the Bush Jr. era, even adjusted for inflation.

The period just before the last recession, just like on Clinton's watch, 35% of all GDP went to the government, leading immediately to another recession. If you look at the tax projections for the next few years, you will see another recession is on the way if we don't get this tax and spend situation under control.

11 months ago: The rich may pay 70% of Income taxes, because they have all of the money because the Income tax is fairly progressive, but the Income tax is just a small portion of total revenue, and all of the other taxes are more regressive.

In fact "the top 1 percent of earners account for 20.3 percent of total personal income in the United States and pay 21.5 percent of all federal and state taxes. The middle 20 percent of households earn 11.6 percent of US income and pay 10.3 percent of taxes. The lowest 20 percent account for just 3.5 percent of income, and pay 2 percent of all taxes. "

"The lowest fifth of earners pay, on average, 16 percent of their income in taxes. At the higher end of the scale, the top fifth pay a bit more than 30 percent of their income in taxes, not much higher than the next fifth down."

"And within that top tier, the top 1 percent pay 30 percent of their income in taxes, which is actually a bit less than the 31 percent of income that the next 9 percent of taxpayers pay." http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/2011/0415/T...

Now thanks to Obama's tax cuts, the poor and the middle class are not paying as much, but because of the extension of the Bush tax cuts to the rich, the affluent are paying less than they have for 80-90 years. Many Americans pay more payroll taxes than Income Taxes, while the rich pay very little payroll taxes.

Excise taxes brought in 19 percent of total revenue in 1950 but only about 3 percent in recent years. The share of revenue coming from the corporate income tax dropped from about one-third in the early 1950s to less than one-sixth in 2008. In contrast, payroll taxes provided more than one-third of revenue in 2008, compared with just one-tenth in the early 1950s.

11 months ago: But back to the intent of the post. Why should the poor of the country pay through slashes of social programs, for the victims of our increasing natural disasters, instead of having the Fossil Fuel Industry which is causing the Global Warming that causes the increase in those natural disasters?

Pay more for groceries so the grocer can pay his tax for keeping his lights on and running his AC and 100s of square feet of coolers, and the increased cost of shipping so the truck drivers can pay their tax for burning the diesel to get the stuff to the store.

And don't forget to add in the tax that the manufacturers, farmers, and office middlemen will have to pay for every drop of fuel burned and every watt of lighting.

That's the ticket. Put the blame where it belongs, squarely on the people who are using the harmful product.

That includes you, Al.

Every day when you turn on your lights, when you crank your car, or ride the bus, or use anything that was brought within your reach by a fossil fuel powered vehicle, you are helping to destroy the planet.
