Warning… This Rant is about the just-released movie “Orphan.” Spoiler alert!

OK?

The movie “Orphan” came out today, and it will be playing all weekend. But all the critics are saying that it’s more fun to know the Orphan spoiler than to actually see the movie. Confused? Read on…

First, here’s the plot of Orphan. (Spoiler safe.)

When John and Kate (HA!) lose a baby to a miscarriage, the stress threatens their marriage. Hoping to defeat their nightmares, the couple visits an orphanage, where they meet Esther, a mature nine-year-old girl. They adopt Esther and bring her home – but a series of home accidents lead Kate to believe that her new daughter isn’t as innocent as she seems.

Kate tries to get John to see the Orphan’s wicked side, but he ignores her… until it’s too late!

That’s the (fairly unoriginal) plot of Orphan. Spoilers start now.

It turns out that Esther has spent time in an asylum -- that’s why there are scars on her wrists and neck. But that’s not all. The seemingly nine-year-old is actually a 33-year-old woman with dwarfism (the proportional kind). Esther was a former prostitute whose clients were primarily rich pedophiles! And she tries to seduce Jon, her adoptive father! AAAH!

Horrible.

I don’t want to see Orphan. But you got to admit, that’s one hell of a spoiler. Orphan is getting a little bit of bad press because it uses the “adopted daughter tries to kill the mother” stereotype. Adoption supporters find it pretty offensive.

Does that make you want to see the movie?

Don't orphanages do medical examines when they accept children into their fold? How could they missed the strapped down breast and not question the scars? Once they stated the secret, I could not enjoy the movie because it no longer made sense.
30 months ago: I also thought that the movie was one of those dumb movies not worth seeing. However, I saw it on Friday pretty much because my partner wanted to see it(I wouldn't have picked it on my own); and it was surprisingly good. The movie manages to keep you on edge and once you know what's up with Esther (that she is mentally ill and that she is not really a nine-year-old) her actions make sense. The twist was different and I liked the fact that it wasn't some super natural thing (such as a spirit or ghost). It wasn't the best movie out there, but it will keep you entertained and on edge throughout most of the movie (the beginning is rather slow). I don't agree with the last comment- you would be surprised how people miss the most obvious. It is quite possible that an orphanage can overlook certain details and that there are people out there capable of forging whatever they can lay there hands on. They couldn't question the scars because she would hide them with the ribbons and wouldn't allow anyone to remove them. Also remember that she was in that particular orphanage for a small amount of time.

My real issue is I've seen movies where the writer goes through a lot of trouble to get the facts right and then use them to help build the plot. You can have the greatest acting in the world but if the movie is about scuba diving and a character doesn't wear any gear, some will say "He can't do that!" I work in the system and I know that this orphanage would be closed after allowing this "child" to slip into their facility and then be placed with a family. Hester being there for only a short time and then not being checked for basics (not to mention diseases) makes it even more unbelievable. Am I the only one that sees that this doesn't make sense?
30 months ago: There ARE movies that make perfectly good sense, stick to the facts, and never take unbelievable liberties to tell the story. These are called documentaries. The Orphan was very entertaining and I thought the twist at the end was very good. I mean, you have to take it for what it is, a horror movie. I just rented Cloverfield the other night and when my wife asked me how it was I said, "Not bad, if you can get over the fact that the camera battery lasted for 8 hours and the guy never stopped taping as the city crashed around him."
