At my local police precinct is a memorial to the several cops from my precinct who have been killed in the line of duty. I pass two fire stations in the course of my week that lost men on 9/11 at the World Trade Center. In my shul is a stained glass window honoring two brothers from the congregation whose mother and father mourned their passing. All of these people were defending their country and our streets. They died the death of heroes.

A great loss I felt keenly was when my musical hero, Lucky Dube was killed in a carjacking in South Africa. He was a great reggae singer who wrote of the difficulties of raising children. He wrote of the difficulties of raising children. He wrote of women with dignity and respect. He was a member of an African Christian church that was independent of European control. He was not into any form of substance abuse. He grew up in such abject poverty as does not even exist in this country. He was a loving husband and father. Is a person who was murdered a hero? Lucky was a hero by virtue of how he lived his life. I still feel sadness that he was taken from us at such a young age, in his early forties. I do not understand why his death did not get far more publicity.

Michael Jackson was an amazingly talented man from a musical family. He might even make posthumous contributions to his already formidable musical legacy.

Despite this, Jackson was a troubled and flawed individual. I was very surprised when I heard that the New York City Council requested a moment of silence in his honour. Perhaps, like many pop stars, he gave money to charity. Peter Vallone, a member of the City Council along with a few others injected a note of sanity into the proceedings. The politickerny.com blog reported as follows of the ripple of dissent in the City Council.

“I think it’s only fitting that this city and this Council stand in a moment of silence for the King of Pop, Michael Jackson,” said Foster, a Democrat from the Bronx.

Oddo, via text message, confirmed he left the room in response to the tribute. Fidler could be seen in the lobby of the Council chambers, peering through the glass doors as Foster praised Jackson.

Vallone, a conservative Democrat who chairs the Public Safety Committee, jokingly said he left the room for the same reason Republican State Senator Frank Padavan accidentally wandered through the Senate chambers in Albany—that is, in search of a cup of coffee.

“That’s what I was doing, wink,” said Vallone.

UPDATE: Lew Fidler told me afterwards, “Clearly his death is a tragedy,” but "I’m the chairman of the Youth Services Committee in the Council and the man was probably a serial pedophile, may have well died of a drug overdose.”

Fidler said the talents of a celebrity don’t necessarily “make them a role model. While we can mourn his death I don’t know that standing up on the floor of the Council to pay tribute to a life I wouldn’t want my kids to aspire to was appropriate.”

He said Jackson “has multiple sealed settlements with the families of young boys. What exactly is it that we’re exalting?”

Ulrich said he left the room but not in protest of Jackson, but rather to talk to Oddo about another legislative matter.

Another Councilman who walked prior to the Jackson honor was Vinny Ignizio, a Republican of Staten Island."

Linda Stasi, a columnist for the New York Post, was absolutely bare knuckled in her treatment of Jackson. Her opening paragraph in today's column gives you an idea of the tone of the article. Her opening salvo reads as follows.

YOU'D have thought by the media lovefest that the pope had died a tragic death after a lifetime of caring for lepers.

But, no, it was the death of Michael Jackson, a drug-addled, creepy-beyond-words, accused pedophile who literally bought his children with the help of two brood mares and, apparently, his dermatologist -- a group of amoral savages who had no problem giving their kids to a man who looked like the Phantom of the Opera and who behaved like a depraved worm.

You can call it "adoption," but I call it child-trafficking.

I was a bit stunned when I read about the dissenters in the City Council. I was shocked at Linda Stasi's column. In my house we just noted how Michael Jackson was in the news and uncomfortably changed the subject. When I heard about the moment of silence in the City Council, I realised that the tactful glosses in the news coverage had gone too far. It was time for a reality check. When you pass a memorial in front of a fire house or a police station, when you look back on the national state of mourning that prevailed in South Africa when Lucky Dube was laid to rest, it puts the death of Michael Jackson into a clear perspective.

The real tragedy of Michael Jackson was the psychological deterioration that sapped his energies, his finances and his reputation. If this troubling subject can be addressed in film or a biography, perhaps the public can benefit from it.

I can not understand how we choose our role models and our icons. Some of the greatest heroes are not household names at all. They might be a teacher volunteering after school or reduced to a plaque on a police station wall. Then there is Lucky Dube, who was G-d's gift to South Africa and the world who is barely mentioned today. I can't figure it out. It took a few feisty New Yorkers like Peter Vallone and Linda Stasi to bring me back to reality. Thanks guys. I needed that

He was an exemplary human being who chose to keep his body clean and his message strong and clear. I think of him and miss him daily. We live in an age when we pay painstaking attention to the question of healthful food yet display reckless indifference to the contents of our music. Lucky's music is truly healthful food for the soul. He displays a balance of attention to a flawed system and to taking personal responsibility. I hope my readers follow my lead in reading your article and listening to Lucky's music. Thank you
31 months ago: Well said. Keep on shouting the truth. I hope you liked my photos too and checked out the memorial poster.
31 months ago: You're just guessing and sound quite prejudiced, and sick yourself. It's obnoxious, hateful, and untruthful. God is truth and love, and you wouldn't know truth if it hit you the face, by the sound of your writing. Michael was rich and surrounded by kids, and a ripe target. Maybe you didn't like his music. That's your own matter of taste, or lack of it. I'm a huge reggae fan too, and am saddened by Lucky Dube's untimely death, like Michael's. You're ignoring the real story, including massive charity. Besides talent and years of work, since childhood. He didn't deserve the treatment and slander, which continues by narrow-minded gossip mongers. Vincent Van Gogh was socially outcast too, but you probably don't like art either. Amazing you believe media sensation because of eccentricity. Ignoring music, charity, and the real person.

Mikis Theodorakis is such a person, who is a musical genius with very disturbing attitudes towards America and towards Israel. Yet I like his music. Is there a total disconnect between the artist, the private individual and the art? It is a profound topic. I have no easy answers.

No one is perfect...NO ONE!!! And for the record there are only 2 cases against Michael for supposedly molesting little boys. The first case the boy admitted his father forced him to lie just to get money and it didn't go to trial. The second he was found NOT GUILTY!! Know what your talking about!! Michael Jackson is a legend and was a very kind hearted, talented person. You try telling all the millions of people who adore him that he wasn't! He had a very hard childhood; let me see you escape the scars he has from what he went through unscaved! Until you walk in his shoes don't judge!!! Be respectful...he was someones everything. Think of how you would feel if someone was treating one of your close family members death the way your treating his!!!

31 months ago: Absent even any rumours, you are trying to diminish the memory of Lucky Dube. There was enough substance around the Jackson rumours for multimillion dollar settlements. There was also thuggish intimidation of one victim. I remember as a child trying desperately to believe in Santa Claus when all the proof went the other way. You bring back memories
31 months ago: I dont understand why poeple still trying to destroy michael's image. I cant understand why poeple jealous upon him this much? this is called insane, serious mental problem. Please try to accept that MJ is a legend, though you cant acheive even in dreams.
31 months ago: Where-ever he is now, I don't think Lucky Dube appreciates using his name to denigrate Michael Jackson. Artists are people and differ in personalities. No one can say Bach is better than Beethoven because he was a church director and family man. Or Paul McCartney contrasted to John Lennon. Also to consider, the US isn't a large audience for reggae music. (I spent a year in Kingston and have musician friends there, and met some of the greats.)
Concerning the slander issue, it was just revealed in the news that Michael faced a thousand lawsuits over everything imaginable after his successful Thriller album. That's simply greed. The media and public participation turns it into slander, which is more appalling and cruel. It's was extremely harmful to him, and his family and friends who shared in the grief. Slander is compared to killing someone, because you kill his reputation, a very serious offense morally. Michael left the US and spent time in Europe. Is that how to treat a very good artist? His eccentricity isn't evidence of anything, except maybe artistic vision. He also lived in California, which is the plastic surgery capital of the world. CA is so strange, it's like a separate country. Slander takes on a life of it's own, and is deceptive, the opposite of truth.
If gossip mongers don't like the reconstructive media attention, maybe they should just eat it, not "Beat It". Serves them right.

31 months ago: How many other millionaire entertainers PAID out on molestation claims. These claims were not pulled from thin air? I could not care less about the plastic surgery and the eccentricity. He should have fought the claims if they were untrue.
31 months ago: Last night a lawyer said it was easier and smart to settle some of the claims. It's ideal to fight in court. It may cost more, and obviously get MORE media attention. You can see that. It's common sense.
You publish your own claims, but I doubt you've bothered with basic research, and assume where's there's smoke there's fire. Slander is deception and ill-will, and may be baseless. Maybe pride is getting in the way and you're trying to justify it. Or just confused by possibilities. Deception is confusing.

The End
31 months ago: Lies are cheap, and you're gullible (and nasty).

The most effective lies are those with a little truth mixed in- drug involvement. He was acquitted in a trial, remember. But some people seem to love gossip.
31 months ago: I did some research for you. There was a tape of the boy's father at the time bragging about the plan. The father even tried to sue a second time after Michael denied it in an interview with Diane Sawyer, because a court order said he couldn't speak about it. Hundreds of children were interviewed who visited the ranch and police couldn't find anyone abused.
The second charge with the crazy mother was investigated by LA child welfare agency who called the charges "unfounded". But the DA had a personal vendetta since the first case was dismissed.
Another article said the stress of the slander lead to prescription drugs. It was devastating and extremely stressful.

31 months ago: Please. He settled the first case for 20 million, and in the Bashir documentary admitted to sharing his bed with a young cancer patient. The boy said that Michael gave him liquor and called it Jesus Juice. You think he just made that up? Get real.

That's why they had to make the boy's mother the issue. To distract from the boy's testimony. I feel so sorry for that kid.

31 months ago: Yeah, it was made up. The kid's family tried to get money from other court cases and other people too. They contacted Michael in the first place asking for help. He was acquitted. Shame on them. And he didn't acknowledge wrong-doing in the settlement you mentioned, but said he wanted to get on with his life. That father had his motives, money. It's tabloid stuff disguised as news at the time.

People are greedy. Maybe you're unaware. I faced greed myself personally with my ex-boss and had to file a fraud claim, and he did a lot of damage to me. It's disgusting to be involved with!

It helps to look at the whole picture, and the people who knew him and were close to him. Glad there's so many who acknowledge the real person.

31 months ago: People are so gullible. Mothers literally scrambled to let their kiddies spend the night with this freak.

It's funny how people who don't want to believe find ways to avoid the truth. Yes, it helps to look at the whole picture, and ignoring eyewitness accounts from staff seems to be one of those things you don't want to look at, along with the porn found at Neverland, and other very disturbing items.

The freak show is nearly over. Now you'll have to find someone else to idolize, instead of getting a life of your own. Celebrities are so much more interesting, amirite? Wasting time on them is so shallow. It might surprise you to learn that there are more meaningful things to spend time on, instead of superficial, self indulgent entertainers.
31 months ago: Like eyewitness accounts about Macaulay Culkin, which Culkin denied. You don't know what was found there, or the truth. He was generous, not self-indulgent. I dislike celebrity fanfare, but no human being deserves the treatment he got. He was acquitted, but never in public opinion.

By author Ian Halperin, "When Jackson settled out of court with his first accuser, Jordan Chandler, for more than $15million in 1994, his career went into a rapid decline from which he never recovered.

Jackson had not wanted to settle the case. I have obtained legal documents proving that his insurance company forced the settlement on him against his will.

The documents state: 'The [1994 Chandler] settlement agreement was for global claims of negligence and the lawsuit was defended by Mr Jackson's insurance carrier. The insurance carrier negotiated and paid the settlement, over the protests of Mr Jackson and his personal legal counsel.'

Jackson was said to have almost collapsed as the settlement was forced upon him. His aides insist this marked the beginning of his mental and physical breakdown."
31 months ago: Evan Chandler was the father, and involved in a custody battle and divorce. He gained custody of his son after the charges against Michael, and money. "There is a taped phone conversation between Evan Chandler (the alleged victim’s father) and Dave Schwartz (the alleged victim’s stepfather) where Chandler says, “Everything’s going according to a certain plan that isn’t just mine… and if I go through with this, I win big time. There’s no way I lose. I’ve checked that inside out. I will get everything I want, and they will be destroyed forever. June will lose [custody of the son]… and Michael’s career will be over.” This tape was played all over news networks and also on the Prime Time Live interview with Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley in 1994. It seems, however, that the media has conveniently forgotten about it."

Jordan Chandler, the son, charged his father with aggravated assault in 2006 in NJ. " 'The judge found that the (dumbbell) weight could cause serious bodily injury or death,' the appellate judges wrote." And he hasn't seen his mother in years.
31 months ago: Interesting, isn't it, that so many people immediately brand us RACIST if we even suggest that Michael Jackson was NOT some kind of "GOD" and isn't worthy of all this hysterical adoration? Would any of you have let your adolescent son sleep overnight with him in a locked room? Would any of you have objected when he fed your son "Jesus juice?" This man could sing and dance brilliantly; he gave to charity. Other than that, he was the epitome of WIERDNESS and I worry about his children.
31 months ago: Why do you believe the Jesus juice story?? Lies are sick, like greed. You haven't examined that possibility? I had to examine your viewpoint, because it was thrust in my face by the media and your District Attorney's office, and Sneddon. He should have been kicked out. THAT was hysterical media.

I've read recently from psychiatrists that his "weirdness" doesn't indicate anything concerning children. I'm not calling you racist, just very rude and unfair. SLANDER DESTROYED his life, and you think you're "good" or something.

There's a difference between being lonely and engaging in actions of child abuse. His biographer said he didn't believe the accusations, and gave some insight. Michael used to sleep with his brothers in early days of touring. "Jackson had recounted how he and his older brothers would squeeze into a pair of hotel beds while on the road as youngsters, 'and that's how I feel best about going to sleep, to this day.' "

He wanted to have children of his own and he did later, and was a great father, reported by many people close-by in a position to comment.

31 months ago: Why do I believe it? Sworn testimony, that's why. Brothers sleeping in a bed is one thing--seeking out adolescent boys to sleep with you in a locked room is quite another thing. I'm sorry he was an abused child...of course, experts know that abused children often grow up to be ABUSIVE adults. How many children did he harm? We'll never know.
31 months ago: It was a zoo at the time. I feel sorry for the child, Gavin Arvizo, because of his PARENTS. They even made him do shoplifting! The mother also was convicted of welfare fraud, and extorted other celebrities. Jackson paid for the child's medical expenses, and they thought he'd continue giving money indefinitely. The Bashir documentary was an embarrassment to the family and started it. The family claimed they didn't give permission for the son's image to be used, and he was teased at school.

The family made a video saying Jackson was a great guy, which wasn't available at first. The child said Jackson slept on the floor, and told a school administrator no molestation happened, and others. On TV Jackson said he helped people, but he'd never put himself in that position again. It was like a media feeding frenzy.

These are interesting details, not hard to find from wikipedia:
