Wow. News stories are rolling with the news that Michael Jackson was taking more than 10 Xanax pills a night. One of MJ’s bodyguards leaked the Xanax drug story.

But what is Xanax? A quick trip to the Xanax Wikipedia entry tells us that Xanax pills are used to treat anxiety disorders, like panic attacks or depression. Also, a Xanax overdose can cause dizziness, fainting, coma, and death.

Michael Jackson’s bodyguard was quoted in People magazine as knowing that the singer ordered himself and three other lackeys to get prescriptions for Xanax pills under their names (very illegal).

Now, while MJ’s toxicology report hasn’t been completed or released, it’s a good bet that that many Xanax pills had something to do with his heart attack and death. Plus, MJ’s staff/friends probably cleaned up the scene of his death before the cops got there. I wonder how many Xanax pills got flushed down the toilets that day?

34 months ago: After reading all of these news stories, I want to know: what is a "Xanax pill"? Xanax comes in everything from 1/4 mg "wafers" to 2 mg "bars." If he was taking "10 Xanax pills a night," was that 2 1/2 mg or 20 mg or something in between? 5 mg per day is considered a high dose and possibly out of the range of safety...

34 months ago: I've been wondering the same, hodgsja. I suffer with panic disorder and I take 1/2 mg pills, 2-3 / day. You would think that with a dose as high as MJ's, he would have the max strength pills, but since he was going to such lengths to get it, it might have been easier to come by weaker pills and just take more of them. 2.5mg wouldn't have killed him, esp. given his tolerance, at least not alone. As I understand it, benzodiazepines are very unlikely to kill someone unless they mix them with other drugs or alcohol, that's why replaced barbiturates. My guess when the toxicology is done is there will be quite the cocktail of drugs in his system.
