In the age of social networking, you would think that people would use logic and common sense prior to posting comments, especially when they are celebrities, sports icons, or hold any high profile position.
However, the running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Rashard Mendenhall, who plays for the National Football League, has put his foot in mouth more than once when posting idiotic comments via Twitter.
Back in March, Mendenhall tweeted, "Anyone with knowledge of the slave trade and the NFL could say that these two parallel each other."
Making such an unpopular statement sparked rage from fans, fellow team mates, and the Pittsburgh football organization a whole.
Just imagine how many young men would give anything for an opportunity to play in the National Football League. Just imagine the amount of money that Mendenhall makes, and how ungrateful he is to have the chance to play football for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Slaves did not have the choice to quit being slaves; however, Mendenhall is free to walk away from his million dollar career at any time.
Now, just consider how Mendenhall's statement reflects on the all of the hard working men and women in America. If he thinks making millions to play a game is such a bad gig, he should try getting a real job in the real world!
To make matters worse, even after Mendenhall made this idiotic statement, he obviously did not learn his lesson. In May, in reference to the killing of Osama Bin Laden, Mendenhall tweeted, "What kind of person celebrates death? It's amazing how people can HATE a man they have never even heard speak. We've only heard one side...We'll never know what really happened. I just have a hard time believing a plane could take a skyscraper down demolition style."
Due to these very unpatriotic statements, Medenhall lost his endorsement deal with the Champion Sports apparel company. Even better, in the football game played last night on the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attack, the Baltimore Ravens played against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers lost in a slaughter with a score of 7 to 35. From the looks of it, karma played a huge role in the victory! Maybe now, Mendenhall will think twice before spewing comments against his employer and his country!
