With the recent announcement by Melissa Gilbert that she and her husband Bruce Boxleitner are divorcing after 16 years and the Will Smith and his wife Jade allegedly going through a rough patch in their marriage, it kind of shakes my faith in marriage…again.

It has been said that over sixty percent of marriages where the couples were on the edge of breaking up and yet stayed together through the rough patches, ended up eventually happier in their relationship. This means that couples who fought their way through difficult times found marital bliss eventually.

So how do couples overcome the rough patches and find happiness in their marriage again? Recognizing the strains and be proactive in making the right is the first step to overcoming this rough spots in marriage. Doing so will make both of you realize that relationships are not always easy and that work will always be needed to survive.

1. Miscommunication in a Marriage
The number one reason that most marriages end in divorce is the constant miscommunication between husbands and wives. When two people are not communicating well, one party will see the other negatively. You argue on the negatives and not necessarily on the real reason you're disagreeing. Many marriages end because both husbands and wives can only focus on the negative behaviors of the other

You can solve this by changing the negative to a positive in your communications. Having communication on the important issues is necessary; however, make time to tell your spouse what you like about them. The old adage of 'honey works better than vinegar' is true. People react much better to positive feedback. Let your spouse know that you appreciate them and what they contribute to your relationship. More positive than negative comments will go a long way to keep your marriage going.

2. Find Some Space
Believe it or not, you can spend too much time with your spouse. Unemployment and the recession have caused many couples to spend way too much time together. That adds a lot of stress to a marriage. If your closest friend is your spouse, you need to get out more. It is important that husbands and wives alike need to have outside social networks other than themselves. It is important to find close friends that you can talk with to help take the strain out of a marriage. A girls night out or Monday Night Football with the guys could be just what your marriage needs.
