Kucinich: A Man a Principle No More

There was once a man from Ohio, who, although I did not agree with I respected. That man was Congressman Dennis Kucinich. Throughout the years he stood for almost everything I was against, and was against everything I was for. However, unlike most people in the House he took these stances based on PRINCIPLE, not party line. His reasoning behind his stances actually made me think of him as a Democrat that might restore some respect to the White House, and Washington D.C. in general.

This all went by the wayside after yesterday's flight with President Obama on Air Force One. He changed his vote on the Health Care Reform bill today, from a principled NO to a party line YES. I wonder what strong arm tactics were used on him. I don't understand a man who's own party shut him out of primary debates could suddenly change his mind. If you "have doubts about this bill," if you "do not think it is a step toward anything [you] supported in the past," if it is not "the bill [you] wanted to support," the why change your vote. I figured Rahm Emanuel, Barry O, and the rest of the White House staff threatened to throw him off the plane. Thinking it through, however, I figure its just the D.C. Bureaucrat disease that slowly eats away at one's principles that finally caught up with him.

Well Mr. Kucinich, I'm sure I'm not the only one telling you I'm disappointed. But, I'm not disappointed that you changed your vote, I'm disappointed that you sacrificed your principles which will empower the Tyrant in Chief even more. You had a chance to stand up to party politics, and for years you did. But, unlike Ron Paul, who voted against his own bill (H.R. 1207 the "Audit the Fed" bill) because it was attached to some financial reform bill, you went against your principles to publicly say you would vote yes.

You are A Man of Principle No More.

What a flip flopper! You are right on Billy this is a huge disappointment..that people's nuclear option is sounding better everyday.

Even Beck was smart enough to figure out why Kucinich changed his mind; Obama promised him that the end goal is government-run health care and this current legislation was merely a transition to that end - a transition that was similarly done in Canada before they went full stop.

And considering that Kucinich is a principled progressive, he wouldn't have changed his vote if he thought Obama was just blowing smoke up his derriere. Nor do I think he would have changed his vote if he thought the Dems couldn't maintain sufficient political momentum down the road in order to make it happen.

23 months ago: No I am disappointed this politician lied, because once again, he used to be a man of principle. Atleast until this administration got him 30,000 ft in the air.

"Throughout the years he stood for almost everything I was against, and was against everything I was for."

He even goes as far to highlight the word Principle so you know this is mainly not about the legislation but the man's principle of changing his mind on Air Force One..

Next thing your going to tell us is all this is all Bush's fault because he changed his principles? No one in this world has any personal accountability especially when people are so readily to help them shuck it off on the next guy right?

He could be more clear by admitting that he hoping this left wing politician was going to help the right wing cause by torpedoing Obama, and now that he isn't, it's sour grapes time.

"On Fiscal Conservative Hypocrites"

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/article...

"The majority party was pushing the largest entitlement expansion since the Great Society. The minority attempted byzantine legislative maneuvers to obstruct the vote. The majority never relented, even taking unprecedented action to ram the bill through Congress.

This was not 2009 but 2003. Republicans controlled the White House and Congress. And with that power they passed the $400 billion Medicare prescription drug bill.

Fast forward to February 2010. Here is Missouri Republican Sen. Kit Bond railing against Barack Obama: "While pretending to get serious about our spiraling deficit there is nothing in the budget to tackle the greatest threat – runaway entitlement spending."

Bond was one of the 42 Republican senators who voted for the historic Medicare entitlement expansion......"

23 months ago: But let's play a hypothetical and pretend that Kucinich was a liberal Republican who was going to vote for the health care bill but due to pressure from the party whips and the teabaggers, changed his vote to no.

Would we see an article from you moaning about a Republican who is principled no more? I doubt it and when it comes to partisans, principal is a moving target.

There are numerous principles that different repubs are standing for, some multiple some one, and some just for party.

By the way I was against the prescription drug bill, as I figured that it was an entitlement we would soon not be able to afford, as well as expanding a program with lots of fraud and waste, thus creating more fraud and waste.

23 months ago: Well when that happens we will see. But I can tell you when Olympia Snow and Arland Spectar voted for the Omnibus bill, I stopped sending money to the RNC until they could tell me that no money would go to them.

23 months ago: I love Kucinich and voted for him in the primary because I think he does stick up for his principles. In this case he would have preferred a single payer plan, and thought there were many things wrong with the Senate Bill, but he realized that a vote against this bill was a vote for the status quo which was much worse than the Senate Bill. Many of his objections will be addressed in the reconciliation, and Mark is right that there is a chance in the future that the country can move to single payer as it is improved in the future.
