Jesus knocking... something's wrong with that picture.

"I stand at the door and knock..."

There is something wrong about the picture of Jesus knocking at the door... is it that He wasn't invited... or that He was made to wait outside? The context of the scripture (Revelation 3:20) "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" ...is that of the Church... and it is as if He was not even welcome.

Recently I was at a men's group where one of our guys didn't show up, and we were discussing that we really enjoyed the friendship we share with him. It occurred to us that it would have been weird if he was sitting in the room, while we were talking about him... as a picture of what we do on any given Sunday... with our Lord. We talk all about Him, yet we fail to talk and visit with Him... all the while He is waiting... knocking.

The early Church didn't have this problem, even from the start... after Jesus' Resurrection He would just appear in their midst, or along the road, and out on the lake shore... Jesus knew when He was welcome... and expected. Such a contrast to today, we are so organized and so particular who we invite... could it be that God Himself is disguised as the "looser" we pass-by on our way to worship?
I mean really, who's house is the Church anyway?

Interesting though, the verse proceeding the one mentioned says... "As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent" ...IF Jesus has to knock on His own house to be let in... IT'S A REBUKE! What have we done? Could it be that the Lord of Lords is made to stay outside... while we wine-and-dine at the memory of His death on the inside? And could it be that He is still out with the sinners, where He is welcome?

Last year I handed out some gospel tracts (small pamphlets about Jesus); and as I did I noticed that many "good" people simply refrained from accepting one, yet everyone that looked "bad" rugged and tattooed up (without exception) took one. Interesting. It has been my experience that most people don't have a problem with God... rather, they have a problem with the religious and pious... that think they are good.
I can see that is one thing they have in common with the Creator.

Another interesting thing is the following scripture to the one mentioned above, and it says... "To him that overcomes will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne" ...I think that this rebuke comes at a timely junction in the Church today... we must overcome... overcome the fear to be seen with Jesus. That's right. Overcoming the fear to be seen with the living Jesus Christ, and sitting with Him in His throne... let me give you a visual... sitting with and talking with Jesus in Church, instead of just talking about Him. Sounds crazy?

We behave in the Church like many do after a funeral... morning the loss, and wishing that the departed was still with us... while all along the "departed" is still with us! The reason people don't believe in our Christ is because WE DON'T EITHER! Jesus has no effect in our lives, our habits and our future. We shouldn't complain that Jesus, the Bible and prayer are taken out of our schools... when we have effectively removed Him from our churches! And make Him stand outside at the door and knock...
instead of allowing Him to walk right in expected, anticipated and most of all... welcome.

(Jesus) said to them, "It is written, 'My house shall be called a house of prayer,' but you make it a den of robbers." (Matthew 21:13)

"As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. To him that overcomes will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne." (Revelation 3:19-21)

Have you ever walked into a strange place, and not felt welcome?
Don't feel too bad, you are in good company...
that's what happens to Jesus Christ...
most any given Sunday or Saturday.

9 months ago: Great post. This is one of the primary reasons I haven't found a church home as of yet. I feel like Jesus is my friend, my companion, someone who I can walk with every day, and even kid around with. God the Father is my loving Dad, who scolds me once in a while when I get too big for my britches, but mostly we have fun being together, every day, every second.

I go to church and it does feel like a funeral. A bunch of songs that sound solemn as dirges, everyone hushed. I do respect God, but I don't feel like he wants us to talk about him as much as he wants us to talk to him. After all, that's why he created us. He was lonely. He wanted creatures that were free to choose Him or not.
9 months ago: OOTB,

You touched on something... God being lonely. God made man in His image, and then said that it wasn't good for man to be alone... I thing you have something there. WE are all created to have companionship... with each other and God. We were created for God's pleasure... that is mind-blowing when you consider how messed-up things are.

Some wonder what was God doing in eternity past... I think He was planning every angle, scenario and possibility to show His love and give us every opportunity to experience His love... "tailor made" to fit each of our individual narratives... without forcing us one way or another. Some feel forced to accept Jesus... and for some that may be what it will take to see how serious God is about loving us.

9 months ago: Don't beat yourself up Box. My Dad was a minister and with all of that I broke from the "ogranized" church. I sat there for years and wondered why everyone was forgetting God the Almighty and placing him second at best... I don't think that is the goal of his Son.
9 months ago: TCG,

I think you are right... it seems that the "church" forgets what they are there for. Maybe that is why Jesus was so repetitive about folks loving God and one another.
9 months ago: Church can be way cool. I enjoy where it is that my family and I praise and worship. The teaching is sound. The leadership is real.

I figure if I'm going to sit under a ministry the leadership has to have something to offer that I cannot get on my own. It has to be on the ball or I am not going to waste the time.

I do not consider myself to be religious and I definitely don't play church.

I've been blessed to have found a place where I can go and give thanks with like-minded brothers and sisters. At the same time, I have my family ministered to as well as re-charge my spiritual battery.

A key also is that I have a band of brothers there for which I am truly thankful. It makes the journey a lot easier to know that I have some real men that have my back for real.

My Pastor is one of my best friends. When one goes to war it's a good idea to have real soldiers in the trenches with you and not milk toast.

Unfortunately a lot of folks have been burned by the organized church and they take that out on God rather than understanding that it's just some of his messed up children who are screwing things up. If all churches were what they are called to be, our neighborhoods would be far different than what they are.

That being said, if organized churches did not exist at all things would, without question, be far worse. We can't survive on this ball of dirt for long without salt and light. That's why I do my best to do my part.

God and family come first. Job and Church take a backseat but obviously are extremely important. They are the means to helping and keeping the first two priorities in focus, perspective, and alignment.
9 months ago: Huey,

Sometimes we are fortunate to be a part of something really great... even that can be a distraction, and we may forget to leave our comfort-zone and branch out in new territory to be a blessing to other "failing" congregations. I know this lady that was part of a thriving Church, but decided to attend an Anglican Church that had become quite cold and formal. She saw it as her mission to bring life and love to that crowd... and be a particular blessing to the minister and his family... she succeeded.

9 months ago: Don't get me wrong... we need the rest and reassurance of a healthy Church and it's ability to recharge and encourage... when one is always "ministering" a rest can be good for everyone! Nothing like a break to keep one from getting burned out.
9 months ago: I guess a lot of folks would consider me a spiritual blur.

I have my home church but then I network with AME, Assemblies of God, Multi-Cultural and Spanish Pentecostal, Methodist and Presbyterian along with secular organizations.

It's a challenge many times not to spread myself too thin and continue to execute on my primary obligations.

We need to work together not just as a spiritual family but as a human family as well. It's amazing how some folks act like Christians are incapable of doing that. Quite frankly I believe we are the best at it.

World Vision, Compassion International, The Red Cross, The Salvation Army, Door of Hope International and Birthright are phenomenal, life saving, Christian organizations. And those do not even scratch the surface of all that are out there.

None of those organization would exist if the TRUE BELIEVERS ultimate purpose was to evangelize, control, and condemn folks to hell.

No. We don't go on Crusades, we save lives.

There is a psychological term for those who want to put us all in the same evangelical basket, it's called the shadow.

According to psychologist Carl Gustav Jung, the shadow is that which in being is instinctive and irrational, it is prone to projection: the turning a personal inferiority into a perceived moral deficiency in someone else.

I'm sure that's why so many in this culture can be specifically Christa-phobic while maintaining a false sense of righteousness and tolerance.

If you see a mess clean it up. If you see someone hurting, help them. If not, don't complain when someone else does it in a way that you don't like or don't have the capacity to appreciate.
