I've been plagiarized.

Recent events here at Rant and Rave have got me thinking about spammy sites and I was seriously wondering if I was a culprit. I have never copied an article. I have written about things that interest me. And yes a lot of the research I do is online. But a lot of my writing is based on my conjecture and extrapolation of the facts.

When I can find the actual source of information that I intend to use, I site it when possible. This isn't as easy as it sounds because I will read 12 articles to get the scope of the subject before I ever set pen to paper. Unfortunately a lot of the info online has been hashed and rehashed to the point where finding the actual source isn't always possible.

So I dug into it a little deeper and came up with Copyscape, which checks to see if your articles appear anywhere else and well.. A lot of them do. But it's not me plagiarizing them - it's them plagiarizing me. Now a part of me is brimming with pride that someone stole my words. It puts a distinct value on them don't you think. But another part of me wants to send someone a bill for services.

In the last few days I've read a lot concerning how different people regard what I do as less then honest. They act as though the use of information found elsewhere is off limits when in fact reporters, (reporters not journalists,) have done this since the times of the town crier. I deliver excellent and I hope thought provoking articles on mobile computing devices and related items. And I like what I do.

Again I have never taken an article and called it my own. I have never scrapped a website. I did post a series of articles I found interesting on a blog I am working on but I gave the author full credit and just posted links to the original work. Is that wrong?

Plagiarism is wrong. And I have found several instances of my stuff on other sites there is an example below. But what should I do about it?

So here's the original.
And
Here's Copyscape You can paste the original URL in to see the results.

I feel for you as anyone of us who have been writing for any length of time will attest, plagiarism is rampant. You can spend half your life tracking down these scumbags and unfortunately get very little satisfaction. I personally let it go and get on to the next article I need to research and write.

As far as your article writing process goes, your doing exactly what many of us do. Read a lot, and then put your ideas and their facts into the "original" article your writing. I believe that the idea of writing is to first get your opinion out, the second is to appeal to the widest audience.

RantRave has been a great place to do this. The opportunity to write good stuff and have it passed on to a wide audience is a major factor in why I write here. Hopefully this issue with Google is not an "issue." I guess we will see whenever Alex or someone else in the Admin group decide to talk about it.

15 months ago: Read, (and/or observe) , digest, write. As long as the words you write are your own and not copied, then you pretty much pass the test and are doing it the legal way. Citing what you read and where you read it is a bonus to the reader and a plug for the other guys work. There are some aspects that might require a better method of citing the other guys work, but they deal with "did you just re-phrase" what the other guy said, or did you actually create a new idea from it. The former is bad the later is ok.

Sorry to hear you are being used without proper credit, the bane of the digital age. If you do a lot of stuff for pay, and they might cut into your income better to nip it in the bud than wait until it gets completely out of hand.

I feel bad for you. If it were me and my words were copied word for word I would sign up as a member on the other site just so I could respond and "out" the poster as a plagiarist complete with links back to my post where they copied it from.

Everything I put on RantRave is my original work. When I copy or use something directly from another source I put that text in italics and include a URL back to the source. I always feel it best to include your sources at all times that's just the way I was taught in school.

Perhaps the Admins on RantRave could compare IP addresses with other sites where stuff gets copied to see if they could find out who was doing it.

It's way too easy to copy and paste and post other people work as your own and thank you for putting up the CopyScape page as I wondered if there was such a site I could use. I'll check on some of my own work later.
15 months ago: It happens everyday on here with recipes.

15 months ago: That's a very handy website - thanks for the tip. If you've written material here on Rant Rave, and it's plagiarized to another website, you can let Alex Layton know plus you can notify the other website yourself.

The only drawback with the Copyscape is you have to pay after a scan or two. When I review articles here for originality, I usually just look for a key sentence and google it; can't tell you how many cut and paste articles I've deleted here but there's no shortage of thieves.

To Happygolucky, if you believe there's content on Rant Rave that's plagiarized and we're not catching it, add a comment with the link to a site which has the same content and flag it.

15 months ago: Yep, I found a couple of mine that had whole sections copied word for word, complete with the typos I made in my rush to get it done. Something called Newsfeedresearcher.com, where they take the good parts of other peoples' writing, and put a little link footnote [14] at the end of the copied section. Trouble was, I clicked on the footnote, and it didn't list my article as a reference.

Now, I have to admit, I'm not a writer, as most of you have figured out by now. And in my beginning days here, which were my first days in the blogosphere also, Yes, I mmmph mummpflle mmmfffflllemmmumpphh. Found out pretty quick the proper way of attributing cred where cred is due.
15 months ago: Hey, Slim, I feel ya man. Writing online is honorable. We figured out a way to make money and be self-sufficient, honestly, and there is no shame in that at all. Hell, it's pretty damn smart.

I've run into plagiarism. It's hurts! Some leave it, some think it's a compliment, some think it's good as a backlink, and all of those are the wrong way to think about it. If you want to leave it like MBurnside that's ok.

@Cully - RR wont do anything because we own the copyright. The only thing that RR can do is what we do, which is contact the person.

@all - there are specific steps to take for getting the content removed. Google is supposed to have an algorithm that chooses the original content and puts in higher in its search engine, but that doesn't always happen because they like fresh content, too. Often, plagiarizers get indexed better.

There are a few things to do. Sites that have no contact info, etc., are usually trying to get as much as they can from Adsense or some other monetization until they're shut down, then they re-open.

Here is an article about ways to prevent, check and get the content removed. It's a good resource to have and includes the links to forms you need, etc. I've dealt w/this issue frequently so if you have a specific question that is not there, let me know and I can try to help.

http://www.infobarrel.com/How_to_Check_a... (check and respond to plagiarism)

Posting the content with the links is actually wrong and considered plagiarism. I did the same thing, thinking that I was "citing it" until I found out it's wrong. You should contact the author and ask their permission or only post an excerpt. Use the

block quote feature. this tells Google that you are not copying the article, but quoting it, and that way no one is penalized

Always look for copyright info including pics.

@Happy - I have an RR smoothie recipe. It's mine. I shared cause it's healthy and good!
15 months ago: Oops. When you use the block quote
don't forget to end it with the slash mark / like I did above!

That's where the show quotes in the comment comes in handy.

I don't think that RR does enough for plagiarism. There are way too many people who post things that are just copied. The other day I saw a prayer. It might be a prayer, but it's still copyrighted...

What do you mean not enough? If it's the one that was flagged, it's already deleted and as mentioned above, I've deleted countless numbers of plagiarisms. Even though I'm not getting paid for this job, I do put in the effort to ferret out the thieves but usually focus my attention on checking those articles that I'm intending to approve for Google News, and much less attention to the articles that don't meet Goggle News standards unless they need to be deleted for other reasons. In any case though, if something is missed, flag it and provide the evidence (e.g. URL).

Hey man, I'm sorry. I didn't mean that personally. I don't think that most sites do enough to fight it. Yeah, it was flagged. I just used it as a recent example.

One person monitoring a site w/so many articles, especially lately, going up cannot do it on their own. RR needs to get specific about its rules. The post about the forward movement of RR is not very clear.

I know you work hard and I wasn't trying to insult you by that comment. RR is very difficult to figure out what's "right" when there's so much gibberish around. I take the terms of service literal. Like I posted on Alex L's post, I use an image always because I thought w/o it I couldn't get out to Google news.

From all of the sites that I write at RR is the least community friendly and hardest to figure out when it comes to a "way of doing things" I guess. Like I see copies of press releases. If the community doesn't know the rules and RR does not make a VERY specific statement about original content then I don't see things changing much.

I don't think any site does a good job at fighting plagiarism. If I've emailed Alex to ask him questions in the past and got no reply, how can I expect his help if someone plagiarizes me.

Plagiarism goes both ways. I also meant that RR is likely not going to do anything to help members get their plagiarized content down from another site. Maybe I'm wrong and that's okay!

Again, nothing at all personal. Hell, you do a great job here.
15 months ago: Damn they got me too! I sent the following e-mail to the user and the site contact.

Hey bennyboy420 Nice to see that you copied my post word for word.

Here's my original post

Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but plagiarism is a crime!

Here is bennyboy420's post

Please don't copy my work ever again.

Thanks

15 months ago: He replied back

"strange that I did not link to Rant and Rave for that. Sorry. I always try to give credit and am sorry that I did not in this case. Sorry"
15 months ago: Cully, credit doesn't mean anything. He still copied you.

Plagiarism is the use of our work w/o asking, not without credit. If he has Adsense on his page then he is making money off of your work.

People think that someone citing us is a good backlink, but it's not because they are taking some of our traffic thereby stealing money right out the bank.

It's your decision what to do, but I demand people remove my stuff.
I do make one exception though. I say to them "Unfortunately, I do not allow complete reproduction of my writing at this time to ensure quality and originality of my work, however, if you want to use the first paragraph or the intro and provide a link then that works. If not, I need you to take it down. Thanks for your prompt attention."

Something like that anyhow. I just made it up but that is the basis of it. If you are writing for a site that requires original content only, like RR should, then YOU can get penalized in the search engines and the other person can make your money. Sounds like this guy didn't do it really intentionally, but also didn't realize that it's still plagiarism.

When I first started writing online I did the same thing. I thought citing was right. But, the internet is different. It's up to you since you own the rights to your work. But, your rights are to have him remove it completely.

I don't know if that helps but I hope so.
15 months ago: @Alex_

As far as I could tell this was the only Rant of mine that was copied. I spot checked others and found nothing. This particular Rant of mine topped 1,600 views, twice as mush as my other highest viewed Rnats and sat in the Top 5 Rants for a couple days.

This was due to Google News. I found that a few Sarah Plain bloggers and web sites picked up the Rant and posted links back to RR to it.

As far as taking my money, I do have an AdSense account but I make so little from it. Since Google won't send a check until you top $100 in your account it may take a year or more before I earn that much. I don't do this for money I do this for fun.
