First, a disclaimer: I am an agnostic that has no problem with any religion. However, I believe in TOTAL separation of church and state, think fundamentalists of any religion are dangerous and hypocritical, and do not want anyone to EVER attempt to convert me to ANY religion. Additionally, I am not anti-Semitic. I am a quarter German-Jewish, and some of my best friends in the world are of the Hebrew faith.
What I have major problems with are Israel's policies and the United States' unconditional support of Israel. The U.S. government gives BILLIONS of dollars in foreign-aid to Israel each year. World War II ended over sixty years ago. I believe that the creation of Israel after WWII was one of the worst moves in the history of government, made on a whim by some of the best thinkers in the history of politics.
The horrors that these politicians saw firsthand in "The Third Reich" skewed their judgment. The decision to displace hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to create a "Jewish State" was moronic. These displaced Palestinians had owned their land for hundreds of years. So the Allies decided to move them to refugee camps right next to their old land. The allies should have let WWII's displaced Jews live anywhere they wanted. There was no reason to give them their own country (at least not in the holy land).
Arabs and Jews have been fighting for hundreds of years. They were once the same tribe. In my opinion, the violence will never even have a chance at stopping if different countries keep taking different sides. We need to let them fight it out for themselves. What I am currently disgusted with is how the American media portrays the Israelis as heroic freedom-fighters, and the Palestinians as terrorists.
Both Israelis and Palestinians are terrorists. They both bomb and wage war in areas that kill many more civilians than "bad-guys". This week has been particularly bad because Hamas staged some attacks, so the Israelis hit them back ten times harder. When civilians die at the hands of Israelis it is "inevitable collateral damage" or "the horrors of war". When civilians die at the hands of Palestinians it is "terrorism" or "cold-blooded murder".
I'm sick of the double standards. I think that the U.S. should stop all foreign-aid to the entire world AND bring all of our troops home. After all, we are only in the Middle East for the oil, so let us let capitalism work at its "finest" (completely unregulated) and have them fight it out. There has to be a loser sometime, and the winner will give us the best deal on the oil. I know that many of the Middle Eastern countries are corrupt theocracies with terrible human-rights violations. So what??? They've been that way forever. Let us fix our domestic problems first. Then maybe we'd have a sliver of a chance at making a difference in the world at large.
