Is your PC Slow?

I can’t count the number of times that PC users have wanted to throw their respective PCs into the trash, because the performance of their PCs had virtually slowed down to a crawl. In 85% of cases, a poorly performing PC is simply due to a lack of maintenance, much as one’s car requires periodic maintenance to maintain good performance. I will review the key factors that cause a PC to gradually lose its performance and stability. Allow me to first explain what Performance and Stability mean

36 months ago: Just like a canuck.
36 months ago: Looks like his PC crashed in the middle of the post.
36 months ago: Defrag and upgrade your RAM.
36 months ago: Better move would be for I.E. users to find the Tools/Internet Options and delete all history, files and cookies on a regular basis.

36 months ago: Thank you for your comments.

In response to Legend's comment, I plan to have the sequel posted by no later than mid July. It will be well worth the wait.

In response to Amishking's comment, I'm glad that you like Canuks. I like Yankees too. Here's a question for you: Did Joe Biden ever hold a US Government position that was higher than that of Obama?

In response to EvilWench's comment, defragging is a key performance factor; however, people with older PC's can't always upgrade their RAM; but if one can, EvilWench's comment is definately valid - you'll notice the increase in speed immediately.

In response to the Cypress Gang's last comment, you raise a good point; however, that will only boost your Internet speed. Maximizing your PC's speed & stability is a whole can of other worms.

36 months ago: Cypress Gang,

Toast applies to "current" event issues. Poor PC performance is an ongoing and every day issue for 75% of PC users who don't know more about improving performance than running a derfrag. It's sort of learning how to keep one's car up to speed.

36 months ago: Mid July? Dude...here's some advice, use that same time to save up for a Mac. People go on and on about them being more expensive. What's your time worth? If a fast working Mac cuts your work time in half, then, trust me, it's more than worth it. And, few people explore the after market of Macs, but really, you can get a very good Mac at many after market stores for 1/3 the money and still get a good 2-3 years out of it. After market stores tend to max memory and upgrade operating system so you are good to go. And you won't have to worry about waiting for what I'm sure will be a thorough and ever helpful treatise on the topic from Mr. Palazzo.

36 months ago: on xp go to RUN and type in chkdsk. Press ENTER. It can clear up some annoying problems. It is not a cure all but it can help
36 months ago: To: Coloranter Raver,

Mac's are great, I have one too; however, the main problem is that, unlike Windows, there is a lack of 3rd party software. But a good product it is.

To: Rudi Stettner,

Chkdsk is a good utility to scan and repair corrupted sectors on a hard disk; however, it does little to resolce Performance & Stability issues. In this article, I described the key problems that cause a PC to gradually lose Performance and Stability. In my upcoming sequel, I'll actually decribe how the average non-technical user can resolve these problems on his/her own.

36 months ago: To Mr. Palazzo: I hope you realize I was chiding you for humor, and I do not mean to belittle your efforts to provide this user guide mid-July. I cannot imagine the effort you will put into it nor the time it will take PC users to wrestle with it because these are foreign to a Mac user, but I salute you for trying. I would say this about 3rd party software availability for Macs. It's a myth. A complete and utter myth. There is far less gaming software – which sorry, I prefer Playstation 3 for games. There is less proprietary software required by businesses because they haven't yet figured out that they could retain 2 more employees for the cost of their annual Windows site license. But, by and large, there is a Mac equivalent or better software for Macs. However, in the worst, worst, case scenario, Intel-based Macs can with the flick of a switch and the purchase of Windows, become a PC able to run all PC software with a catch – tests show, much to the chagrin of any PC manufacturer out there – faster and more stable than any PC. Making a Mac, the ultimate in computers on the face of the earth.
36 months ago: To: Coloranter Raver,

As I mentioned in one of my replies, I have both a Mac and a PC and both have their strong & weak points. But on average, the ratio between Mac versus PC "home based" users is in the magnitude of 15 to 100 and this ratio has been fairly constant over the years.

I am not disagreeing with you with respect to your opinion and endorsement of the Mac; I'm simply pointing out that there are significantly more PC users that require help in maintaining their PCs and that PC maintenance requires a lot more than just simply running a defrag.

In addition, I would go so far as to state that the majority of current PC users are not likely to convert to a Mac platform despite the numerous shortcomings of a PC; especially when using Vista & IE7 or higher.
