I hate health insurance companies. My Mom recently switched jobs (I'm in college so I'm on her plan) and it came with a new health insurance company. We thought the old one was bad, but this company is like the devil. They initially deny pretty much every copay on anything, seemingly just to anger us.
When they do get the correct paperwork they often screw it up. This is when my Mom has to get on the phone with them. Often the phone conversation fixes nothing, and then she has to call back and re-explain the problem entirely. They deny coverage for certain "specialty" medications, unless you buy them through the online/mail-order pharmacy THAT THE INSURANCE COMPANY OWNS.
They tell us we can only see certain specialists instead of the ones with the best reputations. Additionally, my Mom says that they're expensive as hell. I do not know if any of the bailout money went to health insurance companies, but I hope not (even though I bet it did). Their inefficient bureaucracy is designed to turn a profit without any care as to the quality of the coverage, or the health of who they cover.
Luckily (in a paradoxical way), years ago my Dad acquired Lyme Disease and was sick with it for a few years. After ten years of court battles they finally payed his hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills. So when your health insurance company seems like they're exploiting you, they probably are. If you have the time and energy to challenge them they will reverse most decisions that deny you something. Once more to end the piece: I HATE ALL HEALTH INSURANCE COMPANIES because they treat humans like disposable lists of numbers.
